Hello everyone! So I am in the process of painting my thousand sons, and I am trying to figure out some uniform colors. I know that Ahriman's group/army is seperated from the rest due to the dust spell, and the army I want to use a formation that has Ahriman's sorcerers+Ahriman himself. I saw in the Wrath of Magnus book how Ahriman's sorcerers wear the candy red and gold uniforms but there is some conflicting information on that. So does Ahriman's thousand sons wear red and gold or blue and gold, or something different?

It depends on what era. During the Horus Heresy, they wore the red power armor. By the 41st Millennium, they were wearing the blue and gold power armor with the big Egyptian headdresses. That's also after the Thousand Sons were turned to dust by Ahriman, so that's probably the color scheme you're going for.

It was shortly after the Horus Heresy, when the Traitor Legions fled into The Eye and stumbled upon that daemon world that's just billions upon billions of paint tins. They all sat down and repainted their armour, like a bunch of kids doing paint-by-numbers.

What? They had to do something to deal with the frustration of losing. Colouring-in is very therapeutic don't you know.

Of course, the fact that the Dark Angels also repainted their armour just adds to the suspicion that they're heretics...

Think you got it wrong. The traitor legions captured mars along with all the STC patterns of paint. They then put technoviruses to destroy all color schemes as they left. The remnants of the AdMech did all they could, but they couldnt figure out how to paint any colors other than primary red, blue, yellow, plus white, black and a weird green that DA and Salamanders have to share.(they carefully use different lighting to make their chapter photos look different). The only true new chapter created after the heresy, the Grey Knights are so named because their armor is unpainted.

My Dark Mechanicus P&M Blog. Mostly Modeling as I paint very slowly. Lots of kitbashed conversions of marines and a few guard to make up a renegade Iron Hand chapter and Dark Mechanicus Allies. Bionics++

So there is no difference between the main legion that Magnus runs and the banished ones, when it comes to color schemes?

Not really. Like with most Chaos Legions, there weren't actual successor chapters or anything like that, but there are quite a few mentions of little splinter groups and warbands like the Crimson Sons and the Red Echo scattered throughout the various rule books and such (Wrath of Magnus mentions a bunch, as I recall, and some of them have ties to Ahriman). We'll also probably get a few more when Inferno comes out.

The general rule if you're going for in-universe accuracy is Red for 30k and Blue for 40k. Still, the most important thing is painting your miniatures in a style that you enjoy looking at every time you play. If you don't like either color scheme, you can pour through the books looking for an "official" Thousand Sons warband that has a scheme you like, or you can invent your own, as over 10,000 years across millions of worlds, there's certainly been a group of Thousand Sons in every imaginable color.

This helped me out a lot, thanks man.

The wrath of Magnus book (story book, not the Rule book) have new paint patterns for several Thousand Sons Warbands, Most are standard blue with other sub colors, one is Gold with blue trim, a couple are red (like the original colors), there's even a warband that's almost white.

As for Ahriman himself, he's got a thing for the standard Blue and Gold color pattern. There's a couple of stories where he captured Rubrics from other warbands and repainted their armor blue.
