What are the chances are new space marine models being released this year, especially with the highly anticipated 8th edition coming out. Some of the models like the bikes are also really old and due for a refresh.

We just got new vanilla marines not one year ago.
Leave the moulds for Sisters and Guard updates.

Quite high, even though you have almost no need for new models compared to so many other armies.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

As a marine player, I must echo the sentiments of the previous posters:

It is wholly unnecessary, but it's probably going to happen, especially with the pretty-poster-boy primarch already leaked and being released fairly soon.

There's a whole lot of stuff I'd rather see be redone/released before updating something like bikes.

You may already know about them but here's hoping you don't

Vanilla Superbikes - personally I like the Harley/Dirtbike look, fits the Space Wolves.

In the past year, we got two new sculpts suitable for Tactical Marines, two new Terminator sculpts, a few new characters, and a ton of other more minor stuff. Space Marines don't need new models. The bikes are kind of old, but compared to some of the crap that other armies are still using (The only options if you want a Deffkopta for orks is either the snapfit 5th edition starter kit option, or a pewter brick).

So, naturally, Space Marines are getting a new kit this year, almost certainly.

100% There will be new space marines, as long as GW makes new 40k or 30k models

New marines? Oh yes. But more likely new units than rehash of old ones.

The odds are very good that GW will release more SM models in 2017. They are the favourite horse in the race that costs YOU money when it wins.

Indeed, if they don't, they stand to lose money (because SM outsell EVERYTHING ELSE they sell. SM alone outsold the ENTIRETY of the WHFB game and all of its armies).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

It would be a bit galling if they did, seeing as the SMs are only a year old - while things like the CSM Berserker sculpts date from last century...

As 99% of the community will tell you:

Marines in general, especially vanilla units are literally the army with the least need to update, every unit has fully customisable, high quality models.

Basically every other army needs work, including popular stuff, tyranids, basically all orks ... *insert chosen army other than vanilla marines here*.

However they're marines and it's GW so expect multiple new additions, thanks to roberto girlyman coming back theres also a good chance theyll be wearing a dark blue with gold trim ...

Grey Knights - 3500pts
SKitarii - 4000pts
Ad mech - 2000pts
Imperial Knights - 1000pts
Black Templars - 3200pts
Genestealer cults - 1750

I wouldn't put it past them to introduce a new mark of power armor to entice all of the space marine players to buy all new models.

Especially since Space Marines only need a few different poses to do the whole line.

I would much rather see them update the CSM line considering the enormous differences between the newer models and the rest of the line.

I didn't expect the tactical marine updates when they came out, even less, the assault marine box which was the last in the line of power armoured marines to get those quality of life updates came out so much later than the vanguard vets that are clearly based on them...

I would hope GW was preparing to update the scouts. They currently have their unit options split across two boxes, and they're just generally a poor, inefficient sprue.

It seems like the consensus is that there is a high degree of certainty that we'll see new Space Marine models this year. Is this speculation primarily due to the fact that 8th edition is coming out and historically there has always been releases that coincide with it? Because if I recall we did not see a single new kit in 2016 for space marines so that would mean that yearly releases is not necessary a regular thing.

at the very LEAST we can expect to see stand alone boxes of MK3 pwoer armor and Taratoes termiantor armor.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Yes, but please god no. There's no need for new SM models, and I would hope that GW would realize that CSM needs updates. With Gathering Storm giving Chaos a prominent role in FoC and probably RoP, this would be a perfect moment for at least a new Abaddon model.

If you're an SM player you can pretty much expect annual model releases, a relevant codex for every edition, and for your rules to be in the upper half of the power-curve at all times. You'll even get new models when a new release is focused on two completely separate factions.

I just don't want the physical size/height of the models to (continue to?) increase.

100%.
New Space Marines models sell better than any other model would. GW would be stupid not to make something new for them very regularly.
However, since Space Marines really don't have many old sculpts, I just hope they leave enough room for the armies that actually do have ancient stuff that really needs updating (CSM, Eldar and IG mostly)

Nope, no sympathy. If BA didn't have their own completely unnecessary codex they wouldn't have been left behind by the Ultramarines.

Lol no. It's not because of 8th edition - it's because space marines are space marines. They're the favored sons of the company and get any and all updates possible while other factions wallow in despair.

As for 2016 - Did you miss the 30k armor sets?

Space Marines got new minis in 2016, via 30k IIRC.

Alright fair enough. But I guess I was referring strictly to 40k.

I think Space Marines will get new models before

1. plastic sisters
2. ork warboss in mega armor/on bike
3. ork painboy on bike
4. plastic big guns (the zzap gun is no longer available even)
5. plastic aspect warriors
6. new plastic phoenix lords
7. plastic great unclean one
8. imperial guard models (any kind)

Am I a salty curmudgeon? You'd be too if you played orks and GW kept you as the 'joke race' for years.

Cataphracti terminator armor was a genuinely new kit, and IIRC space marines got a new flier as well
