Hey guys, I'm frantically painting up a model for a contest this weekend, and I've reached a point where I need to start working on the battle damage. I've Googled this before hand when figuring out where to apply it, most of them from dakkadakka. The trouble I'm having is that almost every tutorial I find is about painted damage, not carved/cut. Granted there will be some painted damage, but I have some knicks and bullet holes that need detailing. Just can't figure it out in my head before i out brush to model.

Any help would be appreciated! I've *tried* to add pictures, if it didn't work i'll figure out a way. Just so you guys have a visual.

[Edit] Whoop! Pictures worked, click em and they flip right side up.

I think they look pretty good how they are homie maybe a tiny drop of wash or a silver on a bit of the darker colour you have used for your scratches etc

Facts are chains that bind perception and fetter truth. For a man can remake the world if he has a dream and no facts to cloud his mind.

Boltgun drybrush very lightly around the edges of the holes and scratches with a thinned black wash. Gets across that the paint has been scorched off by damage revealing the metal underneath.

Agreed. Drop a tiny bit of nuln oil in the hole, light light light drybrush of boltgun metal on the ridges.

Awesome thanks guys! The bad news is the nuln oil I have is a gloss, the good news is i'll be heading the gw this afternoon for a kill team match. I can pick up some non gloss null oil then. I hate glossy paints, but a buddy of mine bought it with a spray can of leadbelcher for my birthday to get me started on my necrons haha

Sorry for the double post, I just thought I would post updates after taking your guys' advice Still have some work to do on painting the paint chips. Will be adding more to his torso once I finish his legs.

I really like how the bullet holes and carved scratches turned out, thanks again for the tips!

Best,
Ederan

I would cover up some of the silver on the bigger areas. While the damage opens the metal under the paint for everyone to see the scratches and holes are imperfection in an otherwise flat area (where usually not much would be able to stick to it). Add grime, dust, or corrosion in the cavity and around it (google photos of rusty trains or used industrial machines or something like that to see how this evolves over time). Otherwise it can look like the Marine cleaned his damaged armour but didn't repair it.

That's a good idea :p unfortunately I probably won't touch this model again. "Finished" him up last night, competition was today. Ended up with 3 votes on him, but not enough to place top 3. There was some pretty stiff competition, and I didn't paint his face too well, otherwise I think he would have done been a good contender. I had a lot of comments on the highlighting and shading, but his face definitely didn't too him too many favors haha
