Hi Dakka,

I have decided to pick orks as my first army. I know my unsername says Darkangels but i changed my mind to orks. I have a question regarding the Start Collecting box. Is it usefull/worth picking up a box? i have also seen the truck+boys box https://www.games-workshop.com/en-NL/Ork-Trukk-Boyz. I was wondering if it is better to buy 2 of those instead of the start collecting box? Any suggestions what i should buy next? i am playing orks for fun and the painting aspect, i know they arent super competetive. But it would be nice to have a chance of winning a game.

Thanks in advance for information regarding this topic!

Deff dredd sucks competively so that's bad. Also boyz as a whole aren't super hot in competive enviroment.

Frankly if you were looking for competive list(for orks hah!) both sucks. If you are more for fun and painting both can be useful. You just need LOADS of trukks though. One or two will get blown apart. And you need trukks for tank bustas as well.

If you want big foot slogging mobz start collecting isn't worst deals as it has boyz, painboy(essential for big boyz squads). Deff dread and nobz boxes are bit of meh though nobz is good for bitz to spice up elsewhere. Just don't run unit of nobz(meganobz are another thing).

But for fast trukk based army start collecting is waste. You are looking for more like 3-6 trukk boyz mob. And then some way to get tank bustas(converting cheapest option)

I wouldn't say that orks start collecting is a waste, even if you want a fast army.

11 boyz are always useful, and you are going to start the army you definitely need more than that.

The painboy is a solid choice, maybe in a pure trukk spam list he won't find a room but in many other ways to play orks efficiently he sure can give his green fellas a hand.

The nobz are the most controversial thing about the start collecting, as they as a unit totally suck, but they're gorgeous models that can also be converted into other painboy, weirdboy or big meks so if you want those HQs a box of nobz is the cheapest option and allows you to customize your army with unique converted characters.

Many people start collecting orks because they like how they look, now you can make nobz from boyz boxes but those models are monopose and still looking like boyz with pks, not real nobz. That's my personal taste but I really can't see boyz squads lead by those things, that's why I always suggest to get nobz boxes.

If you want 11 orks, 5 nobz and a painboy the start collecting is nice because you basically get three boxes that IMHO are useful and the deff dread for free. You can even sell it and the start collecting would become a better deal.

There are certainly other start collecting boxes that are a better deal but the ork one is not terrible IMHO.

I'd rather suggest it than boxes of trukk boyz as trukks can be easily scratch built. I would hate an army full of vehicles that look the same. However if you are not familiar or interested in conversions that box is nice too.

Not neccessarily. Competive armies have very little boyz as they are so inefficient. About best use for them is convert tank bustas in trukk but...Wouldn't trukk boyz mob be more efficient in terms of money? Discounted trukk you need anyway.

Alternatively 2x10 grotz is common enough core tax before getting the real toys.

Oh no disagreement there. Nobz from those look so much better than nobz from boyz sprues.

Thanks for the replies guys! I will start my buying 1 or 2 boxes of trukks and boys. Do I need more than that? After that are there units that are really strong? So I know what I should buy next?

Well I hate the concept of having a single list, I like changing a lot and boyz are useful, while not necessary, but they find a room in many competitive lists. I converted 25 boyz into tankbustas too, of course you can convert them, I just meant that 11 ork bodies (not necessary boyz) are useful, I'd say mandatory if you start the army. I made some trukks and BWs from plasticard and lego wheels, for the equivalent of 4-5 dollars each. Scratch building vehicles is certainly the cheapest way to field a lot of trukks, rather than buying original vehicles with a small price cut, like the trukk boyz box.

They're not strong at all, but they're cheap in terms of points. Orks work better in multiple small units, which means 1-2 units of boyz aren't particularly good, 5 are. 3-4 trukks are not good, 8-10 are. I suggest to build your ork amy keeping in mind at how many points you're looking to play. 1000 points? You're looking to 4-5 trukks.

Generally speaking the best units for orks are: warboss on bike or megarmor, painboy on foot or bike, slugga & choppa boyz, gretchin, trukks, tankbustas, meganobz, single deffkoptas, warbikes, lobbas.

The other good ones are: shoota boyz, warbuggies with rokkits, battlewagons, lootas, KMK, traktor kannons.

Other units are a little bit tricky to play and I suggest them only to experienced players, some other units are useless or have very poor effects in games.
