Not neccessarily. Competive armies have very little boyz as they are so inefficient. About best use for them is convert tank bustas in trukk but...Wouldn't trukk boyz mob be more efficient in terms of money? Discounted trukk you need anyway.
Well I hate the concept of having a single list, I like changing a lot and boyz are useful, while not necessary, but they find a room in many competitive lists. I converted 25 boyz into tankbustas too, of course you can convert them, I just meant that 11 ork bodies (not necessary boyz) are useful, I'd say mandatory if you start the army. I made some trukks and BWs from plasticard and lego wheels, for the equivalent of 4-5 dollars each. Scratch building vehicles is certainly the cheapest way to field a lot of trukks, rather than buying original vehicles with a small price cut, like the trukk boyz box.

They're not strong at all, but they're cheap in terms of points. Orks work better in multiple small units, which means 1-2 units of boyz aren't particularly good, 5 are. 3-4 trukks are not good, 8-10 are. I suggest to build your ork amy keeping in mind at how many points you're looking to play. 1000 points? You're looking to 4-5 trukks.
Generally speaking the best units for orks are: warboss on bike or megarmor, painboy on foot or bike, slugga & choppa boyz, gretchin, trukks, tankbustas, meganobz, single deffkoptas, warbikes, lobbas.
The other good ones are: shoota boyz, warbuggies with rokkits, battlewagons, lootas,
KMK, traktor kannons.
Other units are a little bit tricky to play and I suggest them only to experienced players, some other units are useless or have very poor effects in games.
