On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Hey guys,

Have recently started a 15mm Soviet Union project for cold war/modern force and terrain and though I would post ongoing work for it here, hopefully help out anyone doing something similar!

I also like to shop around a lot for different miniatures - Team Yankee is set in the 80s, where the Soviet uniform was very basic and similar to WW2 Strelkovy. So to do something different (and make the most of the modern setting) I have stretched forward 10-15 years to the 90s and the Russian Republic infantry.
There is a great line of miniatures from Eureka miniatures, these are from an Australian company but distributed in the UK under Fighting 15s
http://www.fighting15sshop.co.uk/russians-875-c.asp

Ive painted these up in a camo scheme taken from one used by modern Russian Federation infantry. There are different selections of Ak74 weilding infantry, rifle with grenade launcher and rpg.

First purchases: some AA Shilka and SU-22 Fitter ground strike aircraft. Wanted to do something different to the Frogfoot and enjoy making plastic kits, this seemed like a very reasonably priced alternative!

More updates coming soon. Be interested to know if anyone else does anything similar with their Team Yankee force, in stretching the setting and going either more modern or back to the 70's?

Thanks man! Would be interested in seeing those, have you started work on any of them yet?

Here is another shot of the infantry (will try and get some more pics where you can see more of the colours)

Here are some examples of the actual camo pattern that I'm attempting to copy. Camopedia (there is such a thing! ) says that this (known as VSR pattern) started to be introduced in limited numbers towards the end of the Soviet period (so at least I have that fact as a back-up for any sticklers to the Team Yankee time period! )

Next up some Shilka AA units, these are Battlefront's own miniatures and are a resin and metal mix. You have to do a little bit of work in lining up the autocannons but otherwise is very straightforward. I've added magnets so the turret can be rotated, and the miniature has a pleasing weight to it.

Again in researching these seem to have been presented in every camo scheme under the sun. I've gone for a basic dark green colour (they are a little lighter in the flesh) from a pic of them on parade outside the Kremlin. Once I move on to the tanks and APCs will look at using different camo patterns.

As a final question, which miniatures are people using for their T-72s? Stick with the Battlefront ones or look around elsewhere?

I'll be starting work as soon as I can get my airbrush working for the umpteenth time

Still, these Russians are looking good so far!

I'll enquire next time I'm in my LGS about T-72's - there was a guy who bought 3rd party Sho'ts for Arab-Israeli, and it was pretty hard to spot the difference between them and BF official.

That being said though, TY definitely has the best plastic sculpts of any BF range; they'd be tricky to top by a 3rd party.

Wish the same could be said for the metal/plastic kits. My M109 tracks came in all sorts of sizes!

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Thanks for comments guys.

Yes I have seen some of the Khurusan tanks, they look lovely.

In the end after reading some other online reviews I have gone for some T-72s from QRF. http://totalsystemscenic.com/product-category/qrf/qrf-qrf-1900-onwards-postwar-1945/qrf-qrf-1900-onwards-postwar-1945-1990-soviet/qrf-qrf-1900-onwards-postwar-1945-1990-soviet-soviet-armour/

Firstly, again because of online review I didn't get the BF tanks, one site saying they didn't have much detail. Well, after seeing them in person maybe I have lower standards because they look pretty good to me! In any case, although the QRF tanks are metal (and came with a fair bit of flash and tidy up to do) they do have a great range of alternative variants of the tank. So, I've ordered a few of the basic 'A' models, some of the 'B' (which looks like it has an IR searchlight, apparently this version had thicker turret armour, and was nicknamed 'Dolly Parton' by US intelligence at the time), and also a later model which features explosive reactive armour (ERA). Although there aren't any rules for this yet in TY (so it will just count as a basic model), perhaps there will be in future or it could be used for a different ruleset. It's also a pretty neat miniature, covered in the little boxes that constitute the ERA making it stand out quite well.

Also, notably the scale is a little different with the QRF T-72s compared to the BF ones, the profile is notably lower than the plastic miniature.

In the end I decided to go for this colour scheme

Only kidding !

I was far less adventurous and have gone for something that seems like a fairly common Soviet colour scheme for the period

Any more thoughts on T72 welcome!

The T-72 in Team Yankee is the T-72B.

The game has rules for ERA, but nothing currently in the game uses it. I noted once on the forums that the game should probably have rules prohibiting troops from riding on tanks with Reactive Armor.

Haha - I'm not sure whether the ERA would physically stop someone from riding it (the explosives would give lots of hand-holds ), although it probably wouldn't be advisable to be doing it when the tank is hit!

For the next part, was really looking forward to doing something new in 15mm (other than the tanks and infantry I'm used to from the WW2 period). In this case, jet aircraft!

I decided to go for the SU-17 Fitter for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I enjoy building plastic kits (excuse number one! ) Secondly, I was lucky enough to see a couple of these jets (actually the SU-22, which is the exported version) at the Fairford Air Tattoo a couple of years ago. These are still in service with the Polish Air Force, so I thought it would be cool to actually make a model that represented these.

I used an Academy 1/144 scale kit (the accepted Team Yankee airplane scale). A very reasonable £5 inc. P&P.

And as reference a photo of one of the aircraft (some more behind the tab not to fill up the page, but it's a impressive looking aircraft so I think worth the pics! )

Spoiler:

I obtained this info as well from a military aircraft encyclopaedia, which was a useful reference and provided some interesting information about the aircraft.

Finally a pic of the finished miniature itself! Apologies for the poor/grainy picture quality, will try and upload a better one.
The aircraft was mounted on Battlefront large flight bases (which give it a bit more height on the tabletop compared to Helicopters)

Any comments welcome! In the meantime, interested to see what others have used for their aircraft option! Even though the Soviet Union primarily used the SU-25 Frogfoot for ground attack purposes, others were also used effectively (including the SU-17 and Mig-27) and it's fun to explore some of these different options when modelling the force.

Just a quick post to see if anyone knew of any manufacturers making the following for the cold war/modern setting?
- Soviet or American air crew/pilots
- Soviet tank crew

Haven't had a chance to pop down to the club to ask the Flames community for alternate models yet. I'll look into it for you asap.

That SU is looking nice though! My only criticism is on that little bit of dark green camo on the length of the craft; the bit on the end might need another layer. A little niggle, but I've found camouflage looks a lot better when it's nice and strong

That would be brilliant if you could let me know if you find something General Annoyance!
Although upon opening a box of BMP transports I see there are some plastic tank/vehicle crew.. ! Wish I had known that before, would have saved quite some searching.. That now solves half of my requirement, but having some dismounted crew and also US dismounted air crew (helicopter pilots) would be awesome for a diorama I'm planning. I'm wondering if maybe a modern US tank crew might be the way to go for those if I can't find specific miniatures.. ?

And many thanks by the way for the feedback! I see what you mean about the soft edge to the camo, will try and give it an extra bit of line.

Just a small update, a bit of terrain which can block LoS along a road. Got this for a couple of £ from ebay, added a bit of dirt with some weathering powder and have attempted to knock off the metallic paint shine with some Testor's Dullcoat.

Might well make this destructable (or at least run-overable) by tanks, for some satisfaction for the mechanics in the world who had to work on these things

Hey folks - I don't suppose anyone knows of a 'bit' than can be used for adding an ammo crate to the large flight base?

So in what is labelled here as a 'die cavity' I wanted to be able to add an ammo crate or similar, to signify that the Hind's one-shot missile salvo has not yet been fired (so a Desert Strike-style ammo crate or something similar?)

Did see this idea on another blog some time ago, but can't remember where unfortunately so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Also, am still on the lookout for some modern pilot miniatures if anyone knows of where to find some.

couple of bits of balsa?

Haha yes think I am kind of overthinking it! Think I have some old Imperial Guard ammo-crate type things, might just use one of those.

Quick update - an Observation vehicle BMP1, to go with an artillery contingent. Have just added an aerial, and some additional tracks/fuel from another FoW kit, to help differentiate the model.

VERY INTERESTED in seeing how stretching Team Yankee into the 90s works out. I've been wanting to modify the ruleset/write a 15mm ruleset for a 2030 near-future setting .

Arise! Arise from the earth long dead thread and hobby project!

This one ran out of gas a few years ago, no particular reason other than possibly other newer and shinier things have drawn my attention from it.

Recently reading about the new Battlegroup NorthAG rules has really rekindled my interest in Cold War, and especially with the forthcoming CentAG book.So without further ado some Battlefront Fuchs transports and some terrain (from 4ground) to go with it. This one is going to be a slow-burn but hopefully have more than 1 update every 3 years from now on!

Thanks mate! Nothing new to report yet unfortunately. I'm awaiting the release of the Battlegroup CENTAG book which will feature W German forces for that game. It's a bit smaller model count than TY so hopefully a bit easier to achieve and play.

Although some of the stuff in the new TY West German releases do look very good!

Yeah, they are nice models. Just finished my Soviets - onto IDF next so we can do the ME theatre as well.

Somehow I’ve also ended up with a US and BOAR force as well to do...
