I just had a cool thought while posting in another thread.

Since the Flayer virus can affect any necron, why limit it to just warriors? There is fluff that not only warriors get infected, but everyone does. Heck there is a Flayed Lord in the Apoc book. I realise there is the Mephrit Dynasty with their formations that move flayed ones to troops, but there is so much more they could do with it.

Just a rough idea right now but wouldn't it be cool to add an upgrade option to any unit to be infected with the flayer virus, adding 1 or 2 to their WS and initiative as a positive, while reducing their BS as a negative. Could also have a rule where if they come within 3" of a friendly unit the virus spreads, also a negative?

Could change the wargear of stalkers, tomb blades and sypders to include CC weapons if they are infected. Imagine flayed scarabs/wraiths!

There is a lot of missed potential in a flayed army. I realise they would have to retcon the current flayed one's fluff, but it would only have to be a slight change.

There'd have to be a Points Cost, obviously, but I don't see why not this could be a thing. Would definitely be cool to see the virus give some sort of wicked effects based on unit type (e.g. giving Lords and Crypteks cool effects that differ from each other).

Having the upgrade spread sounds like unnecessary bookkeeping, not to mention that if it costs points, then having such a 'Pass On' effect probably isn't a good idea.

Here's what came to mind when I read your original post - Make a custom codex or supplement. Because let's be honest - GW is unlikely to expand on this sort of idea unless they plan to make some pretty drastic changes to the way they approach Xenos Races in 8th Edition. I personally would love to see a "Flayer Virus Supplement', especially if you could come up with some decent formations that aren't just "Let's improve their Reanimation Protocols".

Check out the FW book Fall of Orpheus. Out of date now though.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

I imagine the flayer virus travels slowly a lot like the Necrons themselves. More like a creeping madness, too slow to spread from unit to unit during a battle.

But yeah, if some units had some option like: May replace any ranged weapon with a pair of Flayer Claws, gain Infiltrate, Fear, Deep Strike +2 Attacks and reduce BS to 1. That'd be cool.

Probably quite an expensive upgrade though.

The only thing that stops me from spamming Flayed Ones now is that they're £25.50 for 5 mono pose finecast models.

Yea I know how you feel, I decided to bang out a squad of 10 using bits i had laying around, which then turned into me scouring bits sites to get extra/different stuff, which turned the squad into about double what it would have cost normally

I have a lot of warriors, so ive been proxying 10 of them in addition to my 10 custom ones lately, and since I never feel the need for the excess warriors in my battles, I think im going to chop the guns off and get creative with plasticard and greenstuff, see how they turn out.

I love the fluff of the flayed ones for the most part, I just dont like the GW models :/

Scarabs and wraiths wouldnt make sense. The flayer virus isnt a computer virus. It doesnt effect the conoptek constructs the necrons use. It effects the necrons themselves. Its a mind altering degredation of their consciousness.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

You're correct. However, I could see a Cryptek in the grip of the Flayer Virus modifying his canoptek constructs to act like they're Flayed Ones.

Honestly a Cryptek with the Flayer Virus is pretty scary. Given how 'Cron rech can do basically anything, I could see one building a device to steal the flesh off of an entire planet's population at once or something like that.
