Hello! So, I just wanted to perhaps start up a discussion on a bit of "Counts As". Long story short, I am trying to cobble together an Age of Sigmar army from what I had lying around. So far, so ok (still missing some bits and using some OLD models...) But one idea I had was to use some Lord of the Rings models I had lying around. Specifically, the Dwarf Rangers as Bugman's Rangers. The problem is twofold: One, the scale is off. I think I have a story idea for this (Seperation from other dwarfs over the milenia has altered their appearance) but it still looks a bit weird. But more importantly...they technically aren't correct. Bugman's Rangers are Quarrelers, so they have Crossbows and Axes. The Lord of the Rings dwarf rangers have a few bows, and more Axes.

Now I plan to make up some homemade bows to add to the bow-less ones, but will this be good enough? Would YOU be ok playing against a unit of "Quarrelers" that look like this:

(Bugman is a converted Gimli with a giant cask from the Giant kit...)

Thoughts? Obviously, I will see how my local group reacts to it, but figured I'd turn the idea up to the people at large.

The correct question is, would I be enjoying this hobby if I did this?

The correct audience is you.

To me as long as they vaguely represent what they are supposed to I don't care. Scale issues etc from heroic 28mm / 32mm to true scale 28mm never bothered me, I use LOTR figs too.

I would not mind, since they are still Dwarf archers.

We are playing with plastic toy soldiers. Why would anyone have issues with it? You are not saying this is that and then next turn it's something else, so of course I would play you.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

It is a "Fantasy" game. There is no need to be too strict with WYSIWYG imho.

Good question, I was wondering similar stuff. Since GW decided to stop producing and selling the basic battleline models for High Elves (Spearmen and Silver Helms), I've been contemplating turning to other 28mm scale fantasy ranges to fill some spearmen slots. How mad would people get if I resorted to using KoW elf models with the proper armaments to field spearmen?

I'd not get mad. Granted, I'd prefer citadel stuff for MY army, mainly because I like their aesthethics. But I'm fair game for others.

In my club we are okay if they are roughly same size as the model in question Yours look quite fit for the job. As long as it is clear what is what and you do not do stuff like bringing a plushy bunny taped to a cardboard as your stegadon I do not think it will be a problem.

I have never had issue with someone using a non-GW model for their armies. So long as it is about the right size, approximate visual profile, and appropriate base size, then it shouldn't be a problem. In my local area, there are some guys that are so good at converting up their own models that it would be a travesty to not let them field their custom models!

I DO have a problem with folks that just field bases without models on them. That is just too lazy for me. If you don't have the right model, then try to get something about the same shape and size. I would rather it be wrong than not there.
