Pretty sure this hasn't been a thread before so here goes...

Who do you think is the greatest game character of all time? Remember to give reasons as well!

In terms of player character, I think this one had to go to Commander Shepard of Mass Effect. It's rare that an RPG manages to give you a set character and still leave you so totally attached to them at the end. Whether you're playing him/her as the biggest of big damn heroes, a total bastard or anywhere in between, everyone who's played ME has their Shepard. I think it's a rare thing in gaming to achieve that sense of personal investment without creating a character from scratch, and whichever way you chose to play, Shepard is the epitome of that role.

Honourable mentions in the Player department to the Master Chief and (post-reboot) Lara Croft just for being total badasses.

As for non-player characters, I think it's back to Mass Effect again (if you couldn't tell, ME is my all time favourite gaming franchise) and Tali'Zorah. Garrus is in the running for this one just because he's so damn cool, but Tali takes it for me as she has such a good arc across the 3 games, going from the slightly reluctant youngster in the first to an Admiral of the fleet in the third, but still doubting herself and slightly out of her depth. It mirrors Shepard's arc nicely, particularly in some of the stuff in ME2 you get a real sense she's trying very hard to live up to Shepard and never quite gets there, but equally never gives up.

Favourite: The Arbiter! From Halo if you weren't aware.

Crash Bandicoot is kinda cool, but doesn't have much of a story.

Greatest?
Dunno.
But Zelda has been around a while. Not that i've played any Zelda games.

Shepard in Mass Effect is really a good choice: as bad or good as you make him to be.
Lucky you said player character, Mordin Solus beats everyone hands-down (he IS playable so counts right?).
BTW always running around with him and Grunt is comedy gold.

A bit more over the top is Rico Rodriguez in "Just Cause".
I think I like him the most in JC2 but I have more game to see yet in 3.
He is just plain fun. I have not had so much fun in unadulterated destruction since "Duke Nukem".

All-time-hands-down best character is "HK-47" from Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic.
I have never been so happy to be called a "meat-bag" or his treatise of how love is like a sniper rifle and your target.
He barely "squeaked-out" "Minsc and Boo"! (the connection appears to be a gleeful penchant for destruction).

Oh the flashbacks are worth writing this alone... go for the EYES Boo!

I'd have to go with Gordon Freeman from the Half-Life series. Only as good as you are but still an egghead crammed into a truly terrifying situation whose only response to it is to pick up a crowbar and start swinging.

Probably the runner up is Shepard from Mass Effect or the Warden from DA:O. Both characters are, essentially, you for the entirety of the playthrough. You have to make some of the worst decisions in gaming history; who to kill mostly. And that can effect Shepard (the player) a great deal.

NPC? Well, that's tough. Alyx Vance is up there as is her dad. But I gotta say my all-time favorite is probably Grunt from ME2 and ME3. Doesn't wax philosophical about being something he's not and is utterly loyal to Shepard. What more could you ask for in a party member?

Buck from ODST or Halo 5. I just like Nathan Fillion I guess

Or Reinhardt from Overwatch. Nothing beats a jolly old giant knightlike hammer grandpa.

Poor ignorant guardsmen, it be but one of many of the great miracles of the Emperor! The Emperor is magic, like Harry Potter, but more magic! A most real and true SPACE WIZARD! And for the last time... I'm not a space plumber.

Hmm. Probably Revan from Knights of the Old Republic or Dante from Devil May Cry (original Dante not stupid punk emo Dante). Personally I think the best is Shirtless Dante

Over the top and cheesy (like a good pizza )

Honorable Mentions to;

Mordin, Wrex, and Tali from Mass Effect
Darth Malgus and Darth Marr from SWTOR
Sergeant Johnson from Halo
The Murmillo from Gladius. No personality. Can't have him stealing the scenes from his shield

Ellie from Last of US for genuinely well crafted character.

HK-47 for murderous giggles.

For playable characters, I have a lot but:

Kain and Raziel from the Legacy of Kain series. It's impossible to mention one without the other. Elegant, well-spoken and deep antiheroes. This is also immeasurably helped by the quality of the writing. And it also makes the "Nosgoth" arena game such a desecration. Also major props to the quality of the voice acting.

I would have to say probably Shepard from Mass Effect, but it was fun to be Geralt of Rivea too.

I second the vote for Geralt Of Rivea, beside him I have no real favorite so to speak. Although being the spawn of Baal in the Baldurs Gate series was great fun at times

I agree with HK-47 (KotOR) and Mordin Solus (ME2).

I'd nominate Vivi Ornitier (FFIX) too.

Big Boss, because well it's Big Boss. Also someone who's a man of few words well a hedgehog really yep that's right it's sonic.
No particular reason for sonic other than the hours I spent playing sonic and the strike games way back when, and hell yeah id put down the apache gunship as a character if I could.

Definitely Commandeer Shepard from Mass Effect and Geralt from The Witcher.

I would also like to add Jon Irenicus from Baldur's Gate 2.

The villains from the bioshock series are all impressive. They may be evil, but they contained an incredible spirit of confidence and intelligence. It makes their delusions all the more threatening and powerful.

Most memorable for me personally is the Boss from Saints Row 3 and Saints Row the Fourth, but only if voiced by Laura Bailey, who brings along a great mix of glee and enjoyment that comes with the part.

I also quite like Vaas Montenegro and Pagan Min, the villains from FarCry 3 and FarCry 4, who are both quite over the edge, making for some excellent encounters or just fun quotes.

For nostalgia's sake, I'd like to put up Jak and Daxter, seeing as the Precursor Legacy was one of the first console games I ever played.

More recently, Chumbucket from the Mad Max game was a pretty sympathetic and likeable character for me.
I liked most of the crew from Mass Effect 2, I second Mordin Solus, Tali and Garrus, but I also liked Jack, and I thought Samara's loyalty quest with Morinth was a really memorable mission.

I pick Wario slightly over Bowser and its only because of his fashion sense. I wouldnt argue that Bowser would easily win in a fight though because cmon, hes a wrecking ball that breathes fire

There are almost too many for me to consider. But I guess the safest choice I could make would be any of the popular characters from the ME series.

Hopefully ME Andromeda doesn't disappoint with its characters...

My top 5 favorite games of all time are all Mario games, so clearly my favorite is.....

Spoiler:
Luigi!

However, Geralt of Rivia is up there for me. I am reading through the books now and I have just started the third game after playing through the first two. Really loving it.

I've got a lot of potential favorite characters from games. In no particular order:
HK-47: Gotta love how casually he talks about killing people, and of course calling people meatbags!
Ratchet & Clank: They are definitely a package deal, and they star in some really fun games! I'd have to give honorable mention to Captain Quark (also seen in the Ratchet & Clank games), although his ego probably couldn't take the shock of not being my all-time favorite video game character...
Banjo & Kazooie: Another great (and underrated) dynamic duo of video game characters.
Captain Price: Probably the most interesting character in the Call of Duty games.
Nathan Drake: The hero of the Uncharted games is kind of like a combo of Indiana Jones and Clive Cussler's literary hero Dirk Pitt, which is awesome!
Wheatley: He's an AI purposely designed to be a moron. Makes for a great comic relief villain in Portal 2!

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

My top three characters are:

- Sir Arthur from ghosts and goblins. How many knights do you know that go through hell(twice!) to save their beloved from armor shredding demons?

-Link. Do I really have to explain why he's awesome?

-Sir Daniel Fortesque. A knight who doesn't let a little thing like death keep him down, he rises to the occasion everytime in the name of gallantry! (He does tend to lose his head at times, though)

I'm not a videogamer and only played mass effect and fallout games in last 10ish years, so I'd say Ashley Williams from ME as my fav character. Or, going back to my childhood, Max Payne.
