One of the very best in the business and a thoroughly decent chap, Karl Kopinski has been ripped off.

Personal post...... This page is important to me and I appreciate all your support and encouragement you all give me. I wanted to share a bad experience I had recently regarding one of my paintings in the hope somebody might be able to help? I have had this painting effectively stolen from me. A guy called Ben Rai brought this painting from my website in mid December last year, the order was flagged as high risk because it was to be shipped to the UK but the credit card was registered in Spain. I was advised to email the buyer to confirm he had placed the order? I did and he got back to say yes he had! Painting posted tracked and signed, and signed for by Ben Rai. 2 days later I get a notification of a chargeback as Ben Rai contact his credit card to say he hadn't placed the order. Then the painting turned up on EBAY. My wife contacted the seller on ebay and he said he brought it from a pawn shop in Romania for 200 euros! So within 1 week the painting was brought, sent to to the UK then ended up in Romania in a pawn shop. It just doesn't make sense. As it stands this guy has the painting, his credit card has refunded his money to him and he was trying to sell it to make more. Meanwhile I have lost a painting and had the money taken from me to give back to Ben Rai. I feel completely gutted about this, I feel hurt and I feel deceived. Every painting I paint is a part of my lifes diary, it has in some way formed a part of my life. I don't sell paintings very easy as they all mean something to me, so when a painting is stolen from me like this is now it doesn't feel good at all. I have alerted the authorities and fraud investigation bureau but I wanted to also ask you guys for help. Have you seen this paining in circulation? I am willing to offer a painting as a reward to whomever helps me get this back. I appreciate you guys and I wanted to share this with you. Cheers all. Karl.

Please keep your eyes peeled and spread the word on this in the community.

That sucks, but as soon as it showed up as high risk he should have backed out. Shipped to UK, registered in Spain is a giant red flag.

Good on him for alerting authorities, but good luck getting any real traction from them.

Was the card stolen? If not, then he has a full chain of custody showing a legitimate sale occurred. File suit against the card company and the processor, also let the ebay seller know that, as of now, that item has been reported as stolen. Ping ebay and let them know, so the seller account gets flagged. For bonus points, ensure the CCard company knows you will obtain their internal fraud investigation reports as part of the discovery phase. Even in the event of a stolen card, you can still seek the damages against them. They have insurance for a reason - it's not just for buyer protection.

I've sued Visa twice over siding with a buyer w/o sufficient evidence, and they've settled both times. Be aggressive.

He's in the U.K. so far as I know - and I've pointed him to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

It's like filing a suit, but free to the consumer, and if it goes to an Ombudsman's decision, legally binding on the business.

Ah nice. Yeah, financial company can't just say "sorry bro" when a transaction is done over their infrastructure that is fraudulent by no fault of the sellers. He'll recoup the money, but it will take a while (and always suck from an emotional standpoint)

Best of luck to this guy!

He must have some sort of communication paper trail over social media or email, surely? Can he send the Credit company or the Ombudsman screenshots of the communications to prove the purchase was genuine and voluntary?

Eyeballing it, he's done most of the right stuff - including challenging the buyer.

Whether that's enough to get the money back off the credit card company, I'm not sure,

Is it though? I regularly buy stuff from Japan, delivered to Japan and with credit card registered into Finland.

Curious that doesn't trigger any high risk alerts for sellers or that they don't contact me.

It's additional intelligence.

At the risk of casting stereotypes, Japan isn't a country particularly noted for card fraud. Compare to Nigeria, which has a pretty worrying reputation in the field.

It all factors in.

That's only it's monarchy, though.
