Big changes:

Palpatine is you declare a result BEFORE you roll the dice.

Manaroo is now Range 1

Zuckuss is if you don't have any stress.

X7 is a free evade action if you didn't bump or overlap.

Excellent. Most Excellent. Meta just busted wide open.

X-7 Defenders- I love it when the nerf is exactly what I wanted to see. Still good, but now there are actual counterplay options.

Palpatine Aces were the lists I had the hardest time with. Happy to see it get nerfed a touch.

i hate this new nerf...

Palp should have been range limited just like Manaroo (maybe up to R3)

Manaroo should have been to Range 2.

X7.... i have no words for this. with the current meta being stress inducing lists and the fact that they've just made the defender competitive i'm just disappointed with this. basically just killed them again.

Creative way to deal with Palpatine. I rather like it.

X7 change was probably needed, though I do wish they hadn't changed it to action ... we'll be seeing plenty of ryad still... and probably more TIE Mk.II engine. It was nice not having to worry about (Asajj- inflicted) stress too much.

Zuckuss was DEFINITELY needed and this seems like an appropriate response.

Manaroo really got the short stick here though. Range restrictions of 1-3 would have seemed fine, but R1 is probably a bit much. Not that I will be sad to see the (probable) demise of the Paratanni list.

The Defender is not dead. Most of the time, it is still the terrifyingly efficient monster we have come to know and love to hate. However, the previous X7 was just a little too good, in that it offered no way for your opponent to work around it. It also required very little skill, as you could bump, and still get your evade. Barring corner cases, you always got an evade token. Now, however, if you screw up and bump, you don't get an evade. If you screw up, and fly over a debris field, you don't get an evade. You fly well? Free evades for days, and the Defender is still a terrifying ship. Bad players lose a crutch. Good players can run a Defender without being accused of playing easy mode.

More importantly, there are now ways to counter-play a defender. Previously, the solution was "rol gud or git out". Now, someone faces down triple Defenders, and there is some way to play around the evade. I can run stress control, as you said, or I can try blocking. Stress control typically requires me to out-fly my opponent, initially to get my control off, and then to capitalize on it the next turn. Also, it affects every other build- why should Defenders be an exception? Blocking also requires a bit of skill, and turns the formerly inconvenient "Speed 3+" restriction into an actual drawback, because it will be fairly easy to have general idea of where my opponent is going.

In conclusion, the Defender will remain an extremely viable ship, but the X7 title now improves the game by opening more options for your opponent, as well as now requiring basic flying skills to be used effectively.

Manaroo got a nerf, which makes me sad as I was starting to enjoy that, but the limited range is good IMO, I just wish it wasn't range 1, maybe 1-2 or 1-3, but overall, still a good ability, and now requires more than "Okay, I am going over here, Dengar/Boba, go over to the other side, have support."

Zuckuss is in a good place now I think with there being a downside to him, he's 1 bloody point, if I already have 4 stress tokens, might as well get some more right?

X7 now forces you to fly well to get the benefit, it still makes Defenders cheaper which is good, but that mixed with the palp nerf to me might go to making it a list that rewards you for playing well, instead of just being a pain in the arse crutches. Goodbye, you will not be missed.

Shadowrun is the best game ever. It's the only thing I have ever played in which I have jumped out of a shot out van with a chainsaw to cut a flying drone in half before leveling a building with ANFO assisted by a troll, a dwarf, an elf, and a wizard.

Good job by FFG, smash the meta to hell. Don't like R1 on Manaroo but for everything else I am solidly on-board for. Guess we will see a lot of inspiring recruits on buses now.

Some guys in my local meta are in a flying rage because they bought the Raider just for Palpatine, and now he's "junk."

Nothing else in the game was a sure-fire dice mitigation. Even C3-P0 had a bit of gambling involved.

Range 2 on a large based ship is still an absurdly large radius.

These changes might have be playing competitively again...

Nothing else in the game required a double slot, and 8 points.

While I wouldn't argue against the need for a change, I now feel it's swung slightly too far the other way for the cost. Not a million miles, but over the line nonetheless.

Yeah i've started to read the FFG forums and i'm starting to agree with most of the comments on there suggesting that maybe he's not worth the 8pts you pay for him. not saying he's now terrible but 8pts is a chunk of your squad combined with a shuttle of some sort.

I think part of the issue with Palp is, despite costing two crew slots and 8 points, he outclassed any other combination of 2 Crew slots for Empire. Systems Officer. Fleet Officer. Generl Hux. All Imperial Only support crew, none worth taking over Palpatine.

i would slightly disagree there. in some instances i would say that Fleet officer and Mara are a better choice.

Let's not buy too much of the "Palp sucks" hype. Palpatine is still a really good upgrade, just no longer broken on the "Imperial lists start at 71 points" level anymore. The sheer flexibility of being able to name your result, on offense or on defense, at any range, regardless of stress/bumping/maneuver colors/etc, is still very powerful. And in many cases it will be pretty obvious which roll is the most important one to use Palpatine on.

That's what I keep telling people locally, but not having that last resort available seems like it was a well-worn rut they don't want to leave.

Ah the lulz you caused today. Good one, sir.

I was thinking, maybe Zuckuss will see some play time as a pilot now. I have a hankering to try him with fearlessness.

I was wondering how @Peregrine would come down on the Palpatine change. As an imperial player who isn't a huge fan of the Emperor, I'm looking forward to how this changes things.

Sadly, I don't know if the Zuckuss changes are enough to save the Interceptors (and/ or Phantom)

It's a toss up. I know I'd probably save my Zuckuss shot for one of those juicy targets.

Or a tokenless Defender. Oh yeah. These might happen now. My win at the tournament last month would have been a lot quicker if that had been the case. My opponent flew over sooooo many asteroids, it wasn't even funny.

And I'm sure you meant @EagleofDoom, not @Peregrine, right?

On FFG, people are saying the way the new palp card is written, it only works on the ship that is carrying him. This is because of the text "you must change one of your dice" wording. If this is true, palp is unplayable.

It's an obvious typo because the first part of the card says "before a friendly ship rolls dice", allowing you to use Palpatine on a ship other than the one he is equipped to. The "your dice results" part should clearly be "the dice results", and arguing otherwise is being TFG.
