Hello dakkadakka-wide web.

I painted infinity models by the past (mostly for hobby), and I think I might want to start infinity. However, the amount of rules to learn seems colossal. Plus, it's hard for me to choose a faction and a type of army list (classic or sectorial).

I mostly like big armored models and direct front-assault tactics, but besides these specifications, I don't really know what I would like from a squad in this game that seems full of subtleties.

What first got me interested in the game was the Anathematics model, btw.

So, where should I start ?

The Anathematics are Combined Army.

Armoured, frontal assault is their jam. You've got some tough as nails HI and TAGs backed up by no-nonsense infantry that want to punch things in the face and blow them to bits with shotguns and rifles.

If you feel like getting a little bit tricky, they've for EI Hacking Devices which have more options than usual and some nasty TO camo, or camo and Impersonation tricks with Shasvastii units.

If you like and want to use the Anathematics, start with generic Combined Army (none of their current sectorials can use it yet). Grab their starter set and their Remotes, and pick a few single blisters you like. That'll give you more than enough for 300pt games.

Then play, and as you play games, think about difficult situations you were in, and look at other Combined Army units to see if they could have helped. If there's something you want to try that doesn't have a model or want to give something a spin before you buy it, this community is very accepting of proxying.

By going generic rather than sectorial you will lose out on linked teams, but it'll let you learn the game without adding that headache to it. IF you want to give them a try anyway, the EVO repeater remote can let units with the Fireteam Duo rule link into Duo links in generic armies, so you can get a little idea of what they add.

As far as starting out on the rules goes, get hold of a copy of the Intro Rules in whatever form that you can.

Either from the main rulebook hardcopy, pdf or Operation: Icestorm/Red Veil starter boxes; but if you only really want to go for the Combined Army, there's not much point getting all those minis (apart from when you inevitably want to start a second and third faction!).

Rope someone into playing with you for the Intro Rules. Sure, they don't deal with 2/3 of the way that the game works, but it will get you used to Orders and Face to Face rolls, which is usually the biggest thing to get your head around. People who have been playing for years still have to face the occasional situation where they have to work out what's a Face to Face roll and what's an unopposed Normal Roll.

Play games of 150 points, with half a dozen models on each side. Roll some dice, shoot stuff, climb on top of buildings, sneak around and shoot people in the back. Hopefully go "oh my god, this is amazing!", then look at Camouflage, Smoke, Airborne Deployment, EM/2 weapons, MSV etc.

After that, you'll be wanting to try Hacking, Command Tokens, Fireteams - you name it...

Before you know it, it's three years down the line; you've played dozens of games, have four different armies and still find that you're learning new things about the rules!
