Usually it's the fight sequences that spell out if a movie is going to be a dud or not and that martial arts fight in the stairwell is actually better than most. I guess I'll have to keep an eye out for this one.

Musical choice in trailers seems to be at a high point at the moment as well as intergration with the action in the trailer.

I saw the trailer and was completely bored. It all just looks so generic with some lesbian sex thrown in to pander to the audience. My rule of thumb is that when someone knows their film sucks, they throw in sex and when you've thrown in sex at the trailer its a big warning sign to me that someone has a serious lack of confidence in what they produced

I guess sex sells, just ask game of thrones. I will say though that a movie of nonstop action and over the top scenes that keep going on forever can be just as boring as anything else. John Wick has me go semi braindead throughout the majority of the movie...I just tuned it out. I tend to like violence that is not drawn out, but is intense and graphic....probably why Drive sits in my top 5 movies.

The best thing about these trailers is probably the 80s synthpop tbh. I do like Charlize though so maybe she will be more interesting to watch than Keanu Reeves shooting crap.

I think if John Wick had been a more generic film (like his wife was killed or kidnapped) I'd have been unimpressed but the guy went on a rampage because of his dog, and that was oddly satisfying given the life expectancy of any canine in a movie. John Wick 2 certainly bored me. Sure the action was solid, but it just didn't have the same drive to it.

We rented it and I tried to turn it off right there. The wifey calmed me down and the wiener dog made me rub his belly for awhile, then I could continue watching it.

I get that style is substance and all that, but I don't think that means you can just put Soviet aesthetics and an 80s soundtrack on a generic action film and call it a day. I might be wrong but that looks like what they're doing here.

Ever noticed in Independence Day how the tunnel explosion has a really awkward, obviously made in post shot of the dog jumping to safety, and then afterwards the dog just disappears from the movie? The dog originally died, I think off camera, and test audiences hated it. So they added in that awkward shot to tell everyone it's okay, whole cities have been decimated and hundreds of millions died, but the dog made it.

For my money John Wick was fun up to a point but probably had about three action scenes too many, and the assassin guild thing was misplaced and kind of stupid.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I think women superheroes have been mainstream for awhile, but they exist within a narrower band than guy heroes. Guy heroes rarely have to choose between "being a hero" and "being a guy" while I'd put forward girl heroes are often shoe horned into "being a hero or being a girl" because we generally don't consider a number of feminine traits as particularly heroic. What I mean is that the niches female heroes can occupy is much narrower than those of male heroes. Hence you end up with the most common girl heroes being either Wonder Womanesque Amazons, what I like to call the "too much woman for you too handle" heroes, and the tomb boy heroes, aka the "don't treat me like a girl" heroes. Most female heroes I can think of fit so neatly into one of these categories it sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the broader range of niches male heroes often occupy.

Er yeah or I wouldn't have said it - not sure what you mean?

Lots of action films and TV shows have women as primary characters or at least equal to the male leads - from Mr and Mrs Smith to Buffy, Nikita (TV shows and film) to Tomb Raider, Wonder Woman to Salt etc etc.

I think too many female led movies are still getting viewed through the "HAWT CHIX" lens to say we're firmly in the "Age of Women Heroes in the Mainstream".

Hmm - given that tis hollywood isn't that similar with male leads - they are usually chosen as inspriational for men or attractive to women - or hopefully both - I know the girl I go to the movies with always coments on if the guys are hot or not and her friends are the same.

So to take Atomic Blonde - Charlieze is very atttractive but then apparently so was her co -star - same with most of the Marvel and DC films - the guys are often chosen for looks as much as anything (same as the girls)- and thats fine - I like looking at Attractive people and I think thats true of most people including women.

Now I would contend that most of the current female action roles are also more than eye candy and usually tick other boxes such as strng, capable, confident, assured, inspirational, independant that many women also are looking for - again Wonder Woman did this - that film also had (apparently accdording to female friends) a hot guy with her as well. Now again he was not "just" a hot guy.

Trying to think of a mian stream action film where the woman was not sexy, conifdent, strong, independant etc? (*) - Tv action shows are the same.

(*) Some directors are less acomplished at this than others - Christopher Nolan seldom has actual or even memorable female characters.
