The Ashen Crows

Hello everyone. Welcome to my Missing Legion project log.
As you can see I have already been doing a project and originally posted on Facebook and Bolter and Chainsword bu I though I would show my work to other forums.

Here is a general overview of the legion, I have yet to to a proper write up but this will give you a good understanding of the legion and primarch.

The Ashen Crows have a large amount of apothecaries and are tasked with studying Xenos races and world. They were also hugely involved in testing prototype amour and weaponry and were often the first legion to revive prototypes.
Their primarch is a giant apothecary pretty much, but is still and expert in all fields of science. Due to his upbringing on his home world he is physically the weakness of the primarchs though makes up for it in his vast knowledge of biology and other scientific fields.
The primarch landed on a planet which had been devastated by a virus, reducing most living things to ash.
The primarch being a primarch was immune to the viruses effects and was found by a recon team. Seeing the child primarch they captured him and took him back to the capitol: a huge network of bio-domes that protects them from the virus.
It was the decided that the primarch would be tested on in order to find a cure.
All these test devastated the primarch physically and mentally to the point where he developed a spilt personality, one half compassionate, kind, charismatic. the other cold, calculating and savage.
his darker side takes over, which through force breaks out and goes to hunt down the scientists. he ends up in a forest, overwhelmed with the beauty and complexity of other life his normal side takes over.
eventually found by the head scientist, the primarch finds out he was tested on so that they could find a cure, "to bring this world back from the ashes, you are the ember that will ignite a new age". but also finds that the scientist test him had suffered mentally, traumatised by what they had done to a living being.
This pretty much gives the primarch his moral compass, he feels that sacrifices have to be made in order to progress. but feels that humans shouldn't have to suffer in wars.
The primarch is trained under the scientists and quickly surpasses them in all fields of science, especially biology. using his knowledge he starts to terraform the planet, then papa emps arrives.
The primarch came into the legion with saddness, finding out the suffering affecting the galexy and how men are having to give away their lives in order to fight.
He praised all of his new found sons, and promised that one day no one will have to suffer in the acts of war ever again.
the first recruits taken from the home planet was criminals, the primarch deeming them the only ones worthless enough to loose nothing from joining the legion.
As time went on, the primarch grew to hate the solar axilla and imperial milta and would force them to retreat or he would not fight. seeing it as a waste of life.
often before and during battles his personalities would argue, each one having different ways to achieve the same goal. depending on who won out wars could be focused on protecting the world, or bringing it to the torch. "by killing thousands we could save billions".
The primarch decided to improve the space marine recruitment process and started to grow test tube humans, whos genetics would allow them to be more susceptible to the gene seed in-plant. The humans born were raised in the ships and fortress of the legion learning the lesson of the primarch and the imperial truth.

I will be posting close ups of my work as well as the lore about them so stay tuned.

Very nice work, particularly the glowing flame/lava effects. I I like the ideas for the Primarch. Are you using Raven Guard rules with lots of Apothecaries, or something of your own devising?

Also, how good are the Heresy boxed sets for starting new forces?! I don't think I'll bother buying individual boxes of Tartaros, Cataphractii or Mk III or IV ever!

Interested to see where this goes

Thanks a lot . for normal guys I will be using 30k word bearer rules as the demonic gifts are good to represent the biological advances and changes.
The Box sets are great, they're a really good deal for people wanting to get into HH or even just starting a space marine army.
The first box set I would say is better overall as it has more space marine units and HQ's. but the mk3 tactical marines from the Burning of prospero are lovely models and in my opinion look much better than the mk4 marines from the Betrayal at Calth set.

Galvarian: Primarch of the XI Legion, The Broken Crow, The First Ember

Here's my primarch for the Ashen Crows: Galvarian. A master of the scientific fields but specialises in biology. This guy was a lot of fun to build and paint but It was quite scary cutting up such and expensive model.
What do you think?

Agree with you on the Mk III vs Mk Iv; the IV seems a bit too clean.

And Galvarian is awesome! Did not recognise Lorgar under all that, kudos

Wow, love the concept, think you've got enough of well thought out and individualistic chapter to pull off one of the lost legions. Also your modelling skills are easily good enough to realise your amazing ideas. And to top it off already written into your fluff there are already many reasons why they got snuffed. Nice job, subbed forsure!

The Ablaze

The Ablaze are Galvarians crowing achievement. Designed to replace the space marines, The Ablaze are space marine like mutants who were bigger, faster and smarter than the adeptus astartes. They didn't suffer from the emotions of humanity space marines do (even if they are dampened), they don't feel anger or honour , they are living weapons who do what is needed.
Once grown the Ablaze will start training almost instantly and quickly reach adulthood. Unlike marines they adopt very little of a legions culture and will serve the imperium before the legion. They will have no issue with attacking members of the legion who dare stray from the imperial truth.
Galvarian created the Ablaze so that no humans would have to give away their lives and suffer in the acts of war, but were also created to police his brother primarchs as well as himself.
Galvarian was scared of the damage his brother primarchs could do and worries that many would stray from the Imperiums laws (mostly Konrad, Angron and Lorgar).
Only 100 were created and field tested before the fall of the legion and were vital in fighting back the crazed primarch and his mutant army.

Lord Fugol Durath The White Crow, The Cager, The Extinguisher. and the Converem

"Capture the criminal and stamp out the damned. Their wings will be clipped and their embers will fuel mankinds future."
In the Ashen Crows there were a chaplain type role called the Fugol which were created to enforce the legions laws and discipline the criminal recruits from the home world.
They would also lead enforcement roles when on imperial worlds to capture criminals for experiments.

The Converem
Criminals of the legion, they have their titles and most of their iconography removed. They mean nothing to the primarch, all he cares about is the gene-seed they hold and the data they collect.
They can be found where the fighting is thickest or on close to suicidal mission.
In-between battles the Corverem are locked away and must repair and maintain their own armour and weapons because of this many of the Corverem bare a mix of armour marks and unusual modifications.
Any Corverem found trying to escape or trying to perform another crime against the legion are executed on sight, though is the Plague Doctor is present they will meet a much more slow and painful fate.

Intriguing...
And I love the forlorn hope criminal astartes, particularly how well you've belnded the different armours. That is a Tau shoulder pad on one of them?

Yep, the ablaze weren't easy to make. I will also be explaining why the legion fell soon so that will explain the end of that sentence.

yeah, I intended it to be a experimental piece of armour or improvised armour created by that converem member to replace the one he lost.

Tactical Marine Squad 1 with Apothecary Sergeant

These guys were a pain to paint, i've never been a fan of painting large squads (large for me is squads more than 5 guys) and trying to get the grey right each time wasn't easy. believe it or not the free hand was the easy and fun part and by the last guy It was very easy for me.

The idea of sergeants being also the apochery could be interesting.

Like the primarch. Maybe even have it in fluff that they are as maybe a smaller legion use toxins, chemicals and such to weaken there enemies or bolster there own troops in battle.

Not drathguard steal but more they are lesser in number so gad to get creative.

Ablaze Librarian Aiken.

Librarian of the Ablaze, an unintentional creation, Aiken had been field tested very few time before the legions fall, but it as clear he was a very powerful psyker, his lack of emotion gave him exception control of the warp. Aiken dies when he single handily destroyed Galvarians Mutant factory.

LOVE! The colour scheme. The deep greys combined with the vent/rupturing is brilliant.

I'm really nerding out over your deep greys, any chance of a tutorial for us?

Sure! it's dead easy, the normal troops grey is much harder to get right haha. I will have to create one when I do some more of the Ablaze.

Yeah it wasn't fun, especially when it came to cutting the arms so I could give him the claw and powerfist.
