St Patrick's has never been a huge deal out my way, at least not for me. The only time I did anything for St Patrick's was when I was in the US, went to a parade then went down the local pub and got wasted on Irish whiskey.

1/4 Irish here. I've been to the St Patrick's day parade in Savannah GA a couple times when stationed at Stewart.

Typically I enjoy a few Irish beers and make my daughter something green to drink (generally a non-alcholic margarita or something). We typically also make green food for dinner (though it isn't Irish...) This year it is green/spinach pasta in Pesto sauce with some grilled zucchini and sausages mixed in. I am going to smoke a brisket tomorrow, which though not corned beef is close enough. Yeah, I know, green food is a bit silly, but it has become a tradition from when the kids were younger...

I also tend to listen to Irish (or American Irish) music like the Pogues, Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly.

Half-Irish here. I usually go out to get corned beef in cabbage and toast to my late-grandfather who always dyed his hair green on Saint Patty's day. That man took his Irish heritage seriously.

Frazzled- I don't generally call anyone by a term other than "sir" "maam" "youn g lady" "young man" or " HEY bag!"

Used to spend it eating corned beef and cabbage with the folks when I was younger (delicious!), but I'll probably just have a drink or two and watch Dr. Strange with the wife

I will spend the day cringing as Americans pretend they are Irish because their great-great-great grandfather's dog was from Dublin, and therefore they are blood-bound to engage in activities that perpetuate an offensive ethnic stereotype.

Edit: Apparently I have to state that I am joking. Have a fun and safe day everyone!

That's a pretty bold statement what's wrong with a little harmless fun? Shouldn't we be glad people are embracing other cultures rather than treating the Irish worse than slaves (which they used to do)?

But today I'm hosting a board / card game night at my place with some people from my 40k club.

Curiously, on a scale of 1-10, how big a holiday is st. Patrick's day in Ireland? I always wondered if it was way more celebrated in America than in Ireland.

That's a pissed poor outlook on it. I don't celebrate it(and I'm half Irish) but I also don't knock people who do. Enjoying other cultures is good I think. But hey whatever blows your hair back.

It is.

Americans take holidays to much more of an extreme than other countries.

Edit: Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, just to clarify before people get offended.

I don't celebrate it. As a kid I wore green to avoid getting pinched while looking for kids to pinch. As a young adult If I found myself in a bar on St. Patrick's day I would oblige with a pint of green beer. But basically, its just another day with a name on it similar to President's day or MLK day.

Holidays/Days of observance I do celebrate and how
Strove Tuesday - Pancakes!
Ash Wednesday - Religous service, get forehead marked
Palm Sunday - Religous observance, watch kids swing around palms
Maunday Thursday - Religous observance
Good Friday - Day off, religous observance
Easter - Religous observance, Easter baskets (no egg hunts after the kids were more than 8 years old)
Memorial Day - day off, visit military cemetary or raise toast to the departed veterens
July 4th - day off with fireworks and cookout
Labor Day - day off and what every I feel like doing
Halloween - Kind of receding, havn't given out candy, much less dressed up or decorated in a couple of years.
Thanks Giving - Day off, Thanks Giving dinner with family and friends
Christmas - Day off, religous observances and exchanging presents
New Years - Day off, fireworks and celebrate with friends

In addition to those, there are a couple of faux holidays, i.e. not technically holidays/days of observance, that I celebrate;
Opening day of dove and deer season - Going hunting! (which regrettable I don't always get to do.... )
Superbowl Sunday - Watch party with friends

Eat corned beef and cabbage while remarking most uncharitably on U2. Probably think about listening to Loreena McKennit's Mummer's Dance and sadly reminisce about the bygone days of UPN and PTEN. Try not to get the song "Zombie" by the cranberries stuck in my head. What's in your head? In your hea-eaaaad?

Before we had the little one, there was much pinching and finding of green undergarments and the like.

Not Irish at all. But the corned beef stew is a fun (and dead simple) diversion from what we normally eat, and well-priced for the week, so that's our plan!

It's pretty tasty, although for me it's a once a year thing. The rest of the year I smoke my briskets.

Not gonna lie though, the cabbage smells like a tupperware full of stale farts, and I don't eat it.

I'll chat with my family back home, had the (American traditional) corned beef and cabbage. This year we are at my Mother-In-Law's for her birthday and I'll have a few drinks tonight. Last week I was at a St. Patrick's house party with some awesome live music. I might listen to some traditional music and rebel songs later
