My 8 year old son is getting into Pokemon. He has a pretty massive collection of cards, but doesn't understand deck building at all. He's been playing league days at the store with a starter deck.

Now next weekend instead of the regular league, the store is doing a tournament. His starter deck isn't going to cut it, and I'd like to help him build a deck from what he has to play with. My problem is I don't understand the game at all. Played Magic for a good number of years, so I know a big part of the any card game is in the deck that's built before hand.

So, is there any websites out there that can help me figure out what to go with to help make sure my kid doesn't get his teeth kicked in this weekend?

I played it a bit, basically it's crazy with card advantage compared to magic.
Their official site might be useful. They seem to have regular strategy articles that go into deck building, or what to look out for at the time.

Basically you go majority of the deck are trainers and stuff so you cycle through the 60 card deck as fast as you can to find what you need.

Ok, can anyone explain this Standard thing to me?

I'm looking at the website, and it provides a list of expansions, then says new expansions are legal after the third friday after they are released.

Does that mean, like Sun and Moon as well?

Also, is there a list of what cards are in these expansions? I haven't been paying much attention to what we've been buying the kid, so I'm not sure at this point what is good to use, and what isn't.

Nevermind, I found exactly what I was looking for.
