With the annual Space Marine round well underway, it's time to pick a subject for next month's painting challenge! This month, the options are:

Saints And Sinners: Almost every setting has some kind of deity, religion or belief system, good or evil, holy or unholy. Your entry should relate to this in some way, for example a mighty warrior in the service of Dark Gods, a crusading knight or a holy man preaching to the masses.

Primal: Advanced technology and cunning tactics are all well and good, but sometimes the old ways are the best! Your entry should be a model that doesn't rely on high tech gear or fancy tactics, just basic weaponry and primal instinct to survive, such as a Dwarven berserker, a savage orc, a poorly equipped militaman or a feral and savage beast of war ect.

The Final Frontier: Every civilisation thrives on pushing the boundaries of knowledge and exploring the vast unknown. From explorers sailing the seas to new lands to the captain of a starship on the edge of known space, a scientist's crazy creations or an alien from an untouched world, your entry should embody the spirit of discovery and the unknown.

Legendary: Every story needs its heroes and villains. The only criteria for this subject is that the entry has a suitably epic history attached to it; this could be a special character or one taken from the lore of your game of choice, or a home-made hero (in which case a short history attached to the entry would be appreciated!)

2 days to pick!

I've already painted Ghaz though ...hmm...I haven't painted the oldschool 2nd ed. Ghaz though

not really feelin' that though...I've got a few possible ideas floating around for most of the themes though, so I'll figure something out...just gotta wait and see what wins...right now though, I've got a solid candidate for "Legendary", so I'll go with that

I've gone Saints & Sinners, so I can do my RT Chaplain on a bike. He could also be a legend!

Not really got much for Primal, as I'm (still) painting marines.

Not sure about Final Frontier either.

Dark Angels/Deathwing - just getting started!

final frontier's a bit of an odd one imo...I can't actually think of anything really, (for 40k at least) that obviously fits...only things that could "maybe, kinda, sorta" fit...I mean, there's probably some obvious things there, but I'm just a bit stumped on that one...

As I was coming up with it, I was thinking things like Rogue Traders, AdMech Magi, Explorators ect, and on the other side, some of the more mysterious or unusual aliens like the Vespid or various types of Nid or Necron... It's not necessarily the most obvious one, but I think it can be interpreted widely enough that it shouldn't be too hard.

oh yeah, it's definitely an interesting theme, and a lot of cool stuff could come out of it...it was probably more of a criticism of myself than the theme really, for not being able to think of anything for it

And refuse to love the Spinosaurus because it is a hamfisted attempt at taking what you loved, making it TREX +++ and trying to sell you it.

I went with legendary, but primal would work too.

I think I might paint that sick assassin AOS mini.

Voted primal, but saints and sinners would work for me too. Probably going to paint up my WarGods of Aegyptus typhon assassin. That or a Sebeki harbinger--angry primitive croc man avatar of angry primitive croc god works either way

I could probably do something for any of them, but here's what I'd probably do for each category:
Sinners & Saints: I've got more than one Chaplain model I need to paint, but I could do my recently-assembled Herald of Nurgle as well. I'd most likely stick with my old-school metal Chaplain that I bought specifically for my Battle Company.
Primal: I've got three Circle Orboros warbeasts that need some paint, or else I could do my SLAUGHTERPRIEST WITH HACKBLADE!!!
The Final Frontier: So many Tau models I'd have a hard time picking one or more to paint.
Legendary: Might just give Belial some paint, or maybe Cassius from Deathwatch: Overkill. Or better yet, a certain recently released Primarch...

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2023: 40 | Total models painted in 2024: 12 | Current main painting project: Dark Angels

If we end up with the primal theme, it would really motivate me to do that Ork/Saurus Knight counting as Warbikers conversion I've been planning. I'm sure that could turn out really neat, and the little push in the form of an actual deadline would surely help.

Are space marines primal? It's all I'm painting at the moment.

I can't even think of a good justification

Honestly, I'd say that primal would be one of the only times Marines don't quite fit the ticket, and I find that in some ways a good thing. Has there been a month prior without any? Not to exclude those that collect and paint Marines, of course (that wouldn't be very nice!), but it's a theme that requires a lot of thought and creativity, and really lends itself to conversions, kit bashing, etc. It's really in the spirit of the word challenge. So I'm all for it.

Unfortunately I agree

I'm fairly confident that people are getting sick of my silver and red marines, but I don't want to get distracted painting other stuff. Meh, maybe I'll just have to miss a month

Interesting topic options all around. If primal wins I am thinking of doing another Slaughterpriest (bald version) or maybe the Auric Runemaster (or both).

Due to a new ruling introduced in the 2017/18 season, 'someone said it on the internet so it must be true', you are now required to do both on a suitably epic diorama base. Make it so!
