Hi there.

How have things evolved in v4? Less armor, more troops at tourneys.. Have anyone tried this to the extreme?

HQ+Elites

1 Grand master, MC Nfw, psycannon, sacred incense 200pts

3 Inquisitors, termie armor, psycannon 210pts

Troops

2x6 Grey Knights, 2 psycannons, targeter 452pts

Heavy

3x6 Grey Knights, 4 psycannons, targeter 888pts

Total 1750pts. 34 models, 20 psycannons!

Most boring tactic ever: stay at 30"+, use shrouding and fire away 60 s6 shots per turn (40 hits, about 13 meq kills/per turn).

So whats the verdict?

Well, the only thing I could see is that while there is less armor, there is still some very dangerous armor.

The first that comes to mind is how poorly that list will fare against three Falcons w/ the Starcannon loving. In fact, even though they would almost assuredly die the next turn, the Vypers would likely get all their points and then some on the heavy cost of your guys.
Tau Hammerheads, especially Ion equiped, will cause major pain for you.
Guard would definitely be a problem, especially mechanized. They could just move the troopers back, and roll the Russ up.

I don't think you would last long against Deathwing (who's 2+ saves would ignore most of your firepower, and can drop close in.) For that matter, Podders would eat you alive.

Don't know what the numbers are vs Zilla nids, but I wouldn't count on them.

You would probably be eaten by the Preds in the Iron Warriors, while the Oblits move up nearly impervious to your firepower until they get close enough to fire.

So yeah, nifty idea, but I really don't see it working in the environment today. Too much of the firepower involved is mobile, and it really is mostly transports that have been nerfed.

The HS grey knights are a total rip off. Period. I think that the cannons cost a ton more than they do in the regular suads, so you lose out on the more bodies idea. If you moved them to teleport attackers (fast attack), then you could drop 2 cannons, and buy a bunch more GKs, making them a much more credible threat in hth, while allowing them to deep strike. Sure, you drop 6 cannons, but you could probably buy another troops squad with those points.

cheers

That list actually makes me hurt a little on the inside.

It's not that it's inherently a bad concept - it's that the Psycannon is the most overpriced weapon in the game!

Against infantry, you can have one knight with a psycannon, or two with an extra attack, both attacks at S6, and a brace of stormbolters.

2 Storm bolters - .444 MEQ kills
1 Psycannon - .555 MEQ kills

If you want a simmilar concept, do it with heavy bolters or something in a marine army. 6x 6 man + HB marine squards, 3 loaded out dev squads, bunches of landspeeders (which can pop tanks in a pinch) and there you are!
