Here's the situation. I'm not a hardcore gamer. I have some good number of games on Steam with my 5 year old computer and I have a PS2 and N64 with reasonably impressive game libraries built almost entirely from thrift stores.

Now my uncle is downsizing and offers me an original Xbox, a few games and the rock band/Guitar Hero drums, guitar, mic setup for free.

Pros:
-On my PS2 I've only got the 2-guitar Guitar Hero setup, so it would be an upgrade in that way. Might be fun to play with my kids (3 and 5 now)
-Lots of Xbox games at resale shops these days.
-It is supposedly had access to some very good games that PS2 didn't
-I do like the X-box style controller.

Cons-
-Already heavily invested in PS2 (even got a backup console stored away for when this one dies.
-The rock band setup and console would take up a lot more room than my current systems do in a not-huge living room.
-The wife isn't enthused about more "stuff" coming into the house.
-Not sure if it would really be much (or any) of an upgrade over my PS2
-There's a lot of good games on Steam, albeit generally the good ones are usually a bit higher priced.

Anyway, what do you all think?

Please don't answer with Buy a 360 or a 1 or a PS3 or 4. It's not going to happen. I'm a cheapskate and rather enjoy paying 3 bucks a game or less.

If you are getting games 2nd hand a Xbox will expand on the available games that you can buy. An Xbox should be really cheap as well, assuming that you aren't getting it for free.

Will you play it? Then it would be worth it. If it is going to sit there and gather dust while one is thinking that someday you might play it than it is probably not worth it.

You're a hardcore gamer and someone is giving you a system and his entire collection for said system, for free. I think that answers your question.

P.S. I'm a collector, so I enjoy gems like these. If you really don't have the room or don't really care about having yet another system, don't bother.

I suggest passing this one up. While there are a few great titles that were xbox only, it just isn't different enough from your ps2 to make it worthwhile.

In addition, having been in your house (many times), I don't think you want the rock band instruments cluttering the living room. Make your wife happy, and turn it down.

You can get a 360 used for $50-70 nowadays and it is backward compatible with the original for hundreds of games while opening you up to a thousand more also generally cheap games additionally. That said, if the cost is too high I'd recommend staying with steam on pc. Even an old Celeron laptop is more powerful that the original Xbox in most cases and games are even cheaper and more importantly still supported on steam. There is zero multiplayer or DLC for the Xbox unless you crack it.

Unless you're a collector of retro hardware/software, I'd pass. If you didnt already have another console from that generation and a pc, my advice would be different.

Thanks folks
The wife wasn't interested and as it turned out it the space for it in the car was displaced by other more useful items from my uncle's downsizing. Not the least of which was a case of wine.

Good to know about the 360. I've seen some 360games popping up at resale so maybe I'll pick up a console in the next year or so.

Much appreciated.

Good to hear. Just to clarify, the price I quoted above was for the original "fat" 360 and not the later slim versions with wifi built in (those go last I checked at gamestop for $100). I suspect the price will go down further in the next year with the introduction of the Scorpio Xbox One upgrade (which I finally plan on upgrading my own 360 to).

I say why not. Original xbox games are pretty cheap, like under 10 bucks and youll get really good games to check out. Also they are incredibly easy to fix if a part goes bad, you can still buy parts for cheap as well. Most are a simple plug and play fix. Or you can give it to me

And Id love for you to show me where you can reliably get a 360 for so cheap. Those still hold value

Gamestop has the original fatty 360 for $70 including a controller and power/AV cables and $90-100 for the slims with built in wifi when I checked (and bought!) a fatty 360 to replace my old broken one about 6 months ago. I had bunch of content on an old harddrive and hardwire the xbox into the router so I didn't need the extra features/cost and opted for a fatty to replace my busted fatty. You can get supposedly working ones on ebay for even less but obviously that is a higher risk. When I was looking around on amazon at the time, you could get a naked console (literally just the console and nothing else.. no hard drive, controllers, cables, etc) for $50 shipped on amazon used as well (I was considering that option as well since my components still worked after the 360 red ringed). I haven't looked this year though so YMMV.

Wow those seriously dropped in price and fast. I sold mine off about a year ago and got just under 200 bucks for mine with a couple games with it. Then I take my previous staetment back

Indeed, though most don't buy it for the game itself:

Spoiler:

And who doesn't want a game where you have start all the way over if you don;t eject in time because your character died?

It's worth it for Halo alone.

He has a PC. Halo 1 and 2 (the only Halos on the original xbox) are also on PC and are frankly better there due to later releases, more features, and ongoing support.
