I hear that it's best to run the under some soapy water and gently scrub each piece with a toothbrush. Is that correct?

I think so, yes. You're washing off the stuff they use to get the mini out of the mould, as paint doesn't stick to it. Make sure it's not hot or warm water though, as that could soften the resin.

Warm is fine, and I'd recommend it (do you wash grease with cold water?) You're getting the release agent off when you do that. Hot is not going to kill it unless it's scalding.

Also, if it's bent and needs bending, run hot water over it, bend to the appropriate shape carefully, then run cold water over it to cool/set it.
