Welcome back readers,

After a work related break from the gaming and blogging world YG is back with a review of the lovely 28mm Spanish Civil War Cavalry figures from Empress.

They really are gorgeous although I am not sure about the tiny Bugler in the set !

Great detail, great figures, buy them.

Very nice. SCW is a period I'd like to cover in multiple scales and 28mm would be an ideal second scale for me. Doesn anyone do Carlist cavalry? I'd like to re-create Peter Kemp's cavalry unit, even though they didn't actually get up to much.

Maybe the bugler is a kid.

Cheers George, I am not aware of any Republican Cavalry at the moment, it would need to be a head swap job. It's a possibility that Empress have it on their to do list.

No no, Carlists. Nationaliats with red berets. Peter Kemp was one of the few Britons to fight for the Nationalists.

They look real good, I was trying to track down a ruleset for the SCW the other day (I am currently reading Hugh Thomas' great book) can you recommend any? I have been mulling over getting the figs togther to play out the fall of the Basque region as it has a great mix of different militias and armies.

28mm? I never found an interwar set of rules I liked so I've started writing my own (currently being tested with RCW). Yarkshire plays home brew rules.

For 15mm you could check out Spain in Flames (the Facebook group in my signature). It's a bit niche as it's written in Spanish but it's based on the Flames of War rules so if you're familiar with those it is not so difficult to pick up, or you could try Peter Pig's Bayonets and Ideology.

As George says we use a home brew set, they are based on the Iron Ivan Disposable Heroes set which is being given a version 2 soon but you can still find version one on eBay for very reasonable prices. Iron Ivan also do a SCW supplement with force organisation and equipment in along with a seperate book that has a mini skirmish Campaign in, I would recommend both books regardless of rules set.

We have made some changes to the basic rules but they are still recognisable as DH. We have added a card activation system, random events and a cash based reinforcement system. If you read any of the SCW AAR reports on the Yarkshire Gamer website you should get an idea of what we do.

So for 28mm the Iron Ivan set would be my recommendation.
