This looks surprisingly good. I'm nervous because it seemed like there were a couple of jump scares thrown in. I really hope they don't go that way, as it cheapens a lot of IT's scare factor
This movie freaked me out as a kid, but I'd always watch it when it was on. Love me some horror movies. Probably a byproduct of being born on Halloween.
Can't wait to see this!

Which ending? The book ending?
I had a friend who read a lot of Stephen king, and he said that king had great ideas and terrible endings. And IT is a perfect example of that. I'll admit I haven't read it, but the movie ending was AWFUL. And if the book ending was the same as the movie ending, which it seems like, than it's still a pretty terrible ending.
So, yeah, I'm ok with this movie only being the first half of the book. Trailer looks solid, too.
Incidentally, I just watched dreamcatcher again, and I was a little surprised to learn IT takes place in the same town as the kids from dreamcatcher.
Basically, SK has made me not ever want to visit maine.

OP said the movie only covers the first half of the novel?
The whole Bangor/ Derry/ Castle Rock triangulation must be one of the most terrifyingly haunted places on the planet.
I'm cautiously optimistic for this one. SK novels generally make great reads but not great movies. His short stories, on the other hand, make for good film.

Just so long as they don't have a certain scene from the book near the end that would get everyone working on the movie arrested!! Not to mention anyone who bought said movie or distributed it!
King has some awesome ideas, but some things you have to wonder WHY he included them...when there was no rational reason to put them in. Anyone who read IT knows exactly what scene I'm talking about.
Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Yep. Really changed how I look at Stephen King.

If you've read his "On Writing" memoir, you can chalk that scene and other wtf? moments to the old adage: "Cocaine's a hell of a drug".

Never read the book, I watched the old movie (or was it a mini series?) and it was ok.. this looks like it'll be pretty creepy. I wonder if they're just doing the first part of the book because that's the best? or because they want to make it a trilogy or something? I'm going with trilogy cuz of money.

Pretty sure its a 2-parter, at least.

The original mini series was two parts, split in essentially the same way, so I'd guess they're just following the same structure as it makes sense and the story basically takes place in two acts.

The correct statement of individual rights is that everyone has the right to an opinion, but crucially, that opinion can be roundly ignored and even made fun of, particularly if it is demonstrably nonsense!” Professor Brian Cox
Well, I'm not going to go into the literary merits of that particular scene, but it's not like it came out of nowhere. Puberty, sexuality, exploitation, perversion are all themes thoughout the book.
The coke is probably what caused him to think that exact scene was a good idea to include, rather than simply allude to. (or make the ritual to escape something else altogether.

Extra-terrestrial/inter-dimensional beings are pretty common in his books, although I don't see that as being a bad thing. The same could be said of Terry Pratchett or all other popular authors

My dad got to be a big fan of Stephen King when he was stationed in Okinawa, I guess because he did not leave base too often so ended up reading a lot. He used to scare the crap out of me with stories about It. I still get a chill passing a storm drain at night. When I got to be about nine or ten and "graduated" from reading R.L. Stine, I started on my dad's collection of Stephen King and Peter Straub novels. Tommyknockers freaked me out but It was my "go to" book when I wanted to be scared. Maybe it was because of the association with my dad scaring me as a little kid? In any case, watching the trailer certainly takes me back to the pages of the novel. What little we've seen seems pretty spot-on in terms of the feeling of dread and claustrophobia and paranoia.
This is also how I became a fan of HPL, because King wrote about him in Danse Macabre - which I also read as a preteen. So I started reading HPL around 11 or so and really never looked back to Stephen King. I think all these years of re-reading HPL have made me like It more and more. I think It is probably the only HPL-inspired tale I have ever really felt was convincing, without just being a pale imitation of HPL's own idiom.

IIRC that appearance is simply what the kids' minds register because
Spoiler:
Pennywise is actually an extra-dimensional being inspired by HPL
That's exactly how I take it.
King expanded on this concept a bit in his Dark Tower series.
Spoiler:
It's also what the Turtle is

I still see them taking a couple liberties with the book
Spoiler:
For instance it looks like Mike is going to interract with the Black Spot, which never happened
but overall I'm more impressed than I expected to be

That's my concern. The trailer looks good, and there's a lot of good-looking style in there, but it also makes it look like they're heavily going to play up the jump scare route. So, I'll have to pass on this one, I don't do jump scares.
Tim Curry didn't need any jump scares.
But then, he's Tim Fething Curry.
