I have just recently discovered warmahordes when I bought the skorne mk3 start set from my local gaming store. However, after looking in to more, I have decided I like the look of Legion more so I want to start with them instead (although I'm sure I'll go back to skorne at some point). I especially like the new character warbeast Azrael, so much so that I ordered one last night. My question for the dakka community is this; as a new player, what is a good starting point for an army based around Azrael?

You've gone slightly cart before the horse here, as it's the warlock/caster that should really be the focus of list, and have other things build around them.

That said, as Azrael has bonded with Kryssa, and Kryssa is the Warlock in the Mk3 starter, which offers a good value buy in to a faction, that's probably a good jumping off point.

Check this site out for comprehensive summary and strategy notes on Azreal and all the other Legion stuff (as well as everything else.)

Thanks for that link, there's a ton of good info on that site. After looking at the info on the models included in the battle group, I'm not sure if they are the best choices for a legion list based around Azrael. Kryssa doesn't seem to be a real popular warlock, although she really does help Azrael. The warbeast are my biggest issue though. I don't think the heavy or the shredders are something I'll use. Is there something I'm missing about these starter units?

Kryssa is a new warlock that only comes in the new starter, so she's not going to have had much table time, and, as a starter component, perhaps doesn't offer vets quite the excitement some other warlocks do (I'm just starting out as well, so perhaps not looking at it the same way as other players may.)

As for the other beasts, I'm less convinced by the Neraph, I think of their type, the Seraph is the better because of its animus, but sadly you only get the bits to build it one way, but the Bolt Thrower is a decent utility piece and the Shredders aren't amazing, but they're not meant to be, they're cheap lesser beasts, probably the best option of the three Legion have, and can be used down the line with the cauldron as well as nuisance units. But the starter bags you a playable 0pt force, plus a mini rulebook and a bunch of other bits for the rough cost of a single heavy beast or jack, and is the only current place the warlock that offers the most obvious synergy with Azrael is available.

Realistically, there's no right answer though, you simply need to pick a warlock who you think will synergise well with Azrael, either reinforcing his weaknesses or emphasising his strengths, and then build the rest of your list out of units that benefit from the same synergies.

It's not easy, but that's part of the fun.

You can sometimes pick up the starter box casters at discount games.

Kryssa's OOS right now, I had a quick Google to make sure she hadn't been released separately as an alt sculpt or anything, and Discount Games' link popped up.

So after looking through battle college extensively, I've decide not to base my army around Azrael directly. I'm thinking of working on 2 separate lists (as I want to play in tournaments), one using Thagrosh2 with a large battle group and the if he using Kallus2 and Blightbringer. Both will include Azrael cause I just think he looks awesome and is a pretty solid heavy. Any tips or thoughts on what to include in either list?

Croak Raiders for one; boosted fire damage rolls on an effect that cannot be shaken, and an animus that means that the continuous fire damage cannot be shaken, is great fun, especially with Kallus2's Blazing Path.

Beyond that, the Nephilim Protector is great for extricating your warlock from any close encounters of the melee kind, as well as granting parry for opportune trample attacks that the targets might survive.

Consider warbeasts with Thresher? Continuous fire on a thresher weapon can make anyone pause in bricking their infantry.
