Hi,
I'd like to start an iron Hands army and after some research, the only paint schemes are for airbrushing and the only tutorial I can find on YouTube is for the alternate full metal scheme. If anyone could let me know the scheme I'll be very greatfull

Hey bro, i dabbled in painting some 30k Iron Hands a few years ago and found a nice scheme without having to use an airbrush, i will link some pics down below.

What i did was add some light weathering with a sponge to divide up the black and add more colour.

sorry for the image quality i can send you some better photos at the end of the week if this is the kind of thing you like the look of ?
Spoiler:

"Camouflage is the colour of fear... I have no need to hide from my foes... I have no fear of death.
My colours I wear openly, they proclaim louder than any words, "I am proud to live - I am proud to die!"

Here are some I have done for a client and they were an absolute joy to work on!

Pretty standard vehicles:

I really hope to paint more for him - especially if he gets a Mastodon or something crazy!

Thanks! And I realize I didn't even explain my process! I use exclusively Vallejo paints. Game Air or Model Air, usually.

I airbrush on black primer, then a coat of black paint. I add some Neutral Grey into the black (1:3 or 1:4) and then spray downwards on surfaces. Then I will do a 1:1 spray narrowing the area with a final neutral gray spray in select spots to make it pop. Edge in the same Neutral Grey.

White is built up from Neutral Gray to White, same ratios, edge with pure white. Red is from Hull Red to Bloody Red, same ratios, edge with pure Bloody Red.

I sponge down a dark-grey mix onto edges for weathering, using a brush to tidy and add scratches. Then I sponge a tiny bit of metallics for fresh/deep damage.

Lights are Leather Brown to Flat Yellow worked up in the same ratios as above.

For some metallics, I do an ink spray with my airbrush. The lascannon nozzles are done that way with a brown ink (Liquitex airbrushable variety).

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Hope I helped some!

Thanks em. The scheme looks really good but I don't have an airbrush, so it's of little use to me. I am going to borrow your white technique and add it onto angels for my vehicles though, as well as the weathering.

Definitely think about grabbing an airbrush. Especially for vehicles. It really saves time and gives you techniques that are tough to replicate with a brush.

And you can find relatively affordable ones nowadays with pretty basic compressors. Chicago Airbrush Supply is my go-to because they have so many specials/coupons.

Good luck with the painting! Post pics when you get stuff done!

To be fair you can do all of his techniques without an airbrush. All of the colours stay the same, but the techniques you would use vary slightly.

Truthfully, the only major change that you need to make is to swap the zenthial highlights for more traditional edge highlights and there after you will be fine.

Here's a good tutorial on black power armour that might help a bit
Here's a test I did for my Iron Hands
That's 1. Black primer 2. thin dark blue spot base coat 3. light grey highlights.

@em: sometimes I do give serious thought to an airbrush, but I just don't really like the idea of it. I feel like I'm in more control if I have a normal brush instead, even though it may not be the case.

@winter: I can get confused when trying to transfer different techniques over to different situations, like from an airbrush to a normal brush. Thanks for the input

@timothy: thanks for the input and the tutorial, it educates me quite a bit

Trust me, it is easy with some practice and the control is surprising. I like to think the models I posted show that somewhat. Being able to get smooth gradients is worth every penny. Especially with as expensive as our models are in 30k.

If you want to go with something even more basic (most of it anyway) here are some pics on my slowly growing IH 30k army

http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/leffegnu/library/Iron%20hands%2030-40K

I dont have any airbrush either :/
Basecoat black
Drybrush some grey-ish paint over the black just to give it some edge
Rungefang steel on metal parts followed with some nuil oil /wash
White on white parts
and you are done
