Over the Cuckoos Nest

Hi,

I make scratch builds and conversions for tabletop war games and rpgs. I dabble in a lot of things, but am focusing on fantasy miniatures for D&D/Pathfinder at the moment.

Here is my latest completed figure, a Spectator (Beholder Lite):

(Original Post)
Hello,

I started playing Shadowrun Fifth Edition last year and recently decided to make miniatures for my current character and back up character.

I don't have a lot of experience with miniatures, and haven't done anything with them in over seven years. I've bought most of the tools I think I need, and have started kitbashing.

I am welcome to all feedback.

Alright first up is a MCT-Nissan Roto Drone:

Spoiler:

I got impatient and built this miniature with just an Xacto knife and Krazy Glue.

Self critiquing, I think the feet are too big. I also think that the area where the head rotor assembly and torso meet could be slightly shorter, and could use some greenstuff to blend some of the shapes together. Also the detail extrusions on the torso should probably be sanded off to look more aerodynamic.

Next I'll start working on the Ares Alpha (bullpup assault rifle with underbarrell grenade launcher) that goes with this drone.

Keep in my mind that now I have plenty of tools to do a better job on the next version, but feedback is definitely welcome.

Thanks for looking.

Spoiler:
Here is the image I'm using as a general guide for the roto drone:

I've started work on the Ares Alpha, here is the fan interpretation I'm basing my build from:

And here is official art from a previous edition of Shadowrun:

Personally I like the fan version better.

Here is my first attempt:

It's way too long, and kind of a mess. So I chopped it up and created this:

Again it was too big. The roto drone is classified as a Medium Sized Drone in Shadowrun 5th Ed., which means it's between Adult Human and Large Dog sized. I'm going with for an Adult Human size, which I think the drone already slightly too tall without even counting the feet. This version of the Ares Alpha might look ok for a 40k Ork or Space Marine, but it too big for a vanilla Human sized weapon in Shadowrun.

I chopped it up again, but decided to just start from scratch and convert a Tau Fire Warriors Gun Drone Pulse Carbine. It's not done, but here's what I have so far:

I like the size, it's not too much longer that the original weapon length. Drones in Shadowrun generally are unable to load new magazine by themselves, so I used a Snazzgun ammo drum magazine with the repurposed bottom front of the Pulse Carbine to extend the stock. I added a trimmed down Skitarii Infiltrator Flechette Blaster suppressor for a barrel; I used the main body of that gun for the grenade launcher body and grip. I can't remember what I cut the piece off of for the grenade launcher tube. The grip is from the Genestealer Cult Grenade Launcher I butchered for the first attempt.

So the underbarrel grenade launcher on an Ares Alpha holds 6 grenades. I have a cursory knowledge of civilian firearms, but I don't have much knowledge about underbarrel grenade launchers other than video games and other pop culture sources. So all that being said, my ignorant guess is that maybe it has a tube magazine like a shotgun With that idea I added the cut off ejector port from a Kastelan Robot Heavy Phosphor Blaster to represent the loading port (is that the right term?) for the tube magazine. I think I might move it down slightly and trim it down. Thoughts?

My other plans are to sand the greenstuff even on the top, add some more detail and drill out a hole for the trigger assembly.

I started work on two other roto drones.

Spoiler:
The first one has a body make out of a Kastelan Robot Heavy Phosphor Blaster.

I basically cut it even and sanded off all raised details and speckled over all the indents leftover for the gun details. I trimmed down a Flash Gitz Snazzgun cover with an opening with wiring and glued it into the body to represent a missing access panel.

I have some other random bits I glue together which will get glued in behind the wires to finish filing in the back of the space.

From my time on this forum I've seen that people typically fully assemble their models then paint it. I have almost no model painting experience, that's a small opening, and the wiring is going to obscure half of the detail section glued behind it.

Question: in this situation would it be better the paint the rear details piece separately and glue it in afterward?

I'm helping a friend by making DnD maps and terrain. I also volunteered to sculpt a Spectator, which is like a Beholder but only has four eye stalks.

I started with the top half of the body, sculpting the eye and spikes. I'll probably carefully sharpen some of the spikes with an Xacto knife once they harden.

The next challenge will be adding the large open mouth with a long tongue.

Looking good so far, Grass4hopper - depending on how sharp/hard you want the spikes, you may have to consider trying out Brown Stuff as a putty for those bits, as I believe it holds a crisper edge.

Not that familiar with DnD or Shadowrun but this looks interesting. Looking forward to seeing where it goes.

Nice sculpting btw

Thanks for the compliments, and thank you Dysartes for the suggestion. I'll have to get some Brown Stuff for future sculpts.

I decided to try making a DnD Flesh Golem for my friend's game. For those who don't know, a Flesh Golem is basically Frankenstein's Monster, but can be made from the parts of multiple fantasy races.

I'm happy with the torso, shoulders and pelvis, but the legs need to be trimmed down and resculpted.

Holy crap man, I don't think I've seen anyone spend so much effort making something like this. Your converting skills are astounding.

Keep up the good work, chummer

@ Novelist47 Thanks chummer, appreciate it.

I did some more work on the Flesh Golem

I added fur to the long right forearm, added some texture to the right shoulder and added a tentacle left arm. I made a loincloth, but won't attach it until I redo the legs.

Thanks for looking.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Quick update on the Flesh Golem.

I added an elbow guard and more tentacle work to the left arm. I also started making a chain . . . bandolier, or what ever the right word is, to anchor the shoulder pad. It will go over both shoulders and around the torso. I tried to sculpt an Ogre/Troll style head, but it was an ugly mess, and not in a good way. I ordered some Ogryn and Ork bits and I'll just modify one of them. The legs still need to be worked on, but I want to finish the upper body and head first.

Update on the Spectator and Flesh Golem. My friends Convention game is next Saturday, so I'm really trying to get these miniatures finished in time.

I've added the lower jaw, and have started adding the teeth. I'll sculpt the long tongue next.

Next up is Handsome Hank the Flesh Golem.

I finished the chain harness that holds the shoulder armor. I added a neck guard to the left shoulder armor, and added a right shoulder pad that it part of a monster jawbones, which still needs the teeth glued on. My bitz are coming from England, and probably wouldn't have made it in time, so I bought a Blood Bowl Troll. I cut of the Troll head nose, and rescuplted a more blunt nose. I still might add another layer of nostril wrinkles. I cut off the lower right leg, and added a Genestealer Cult leg. I'm going to use the other Genestealer leg, which I modified slightly to be flat footed. I added a Frankenstein Monster inspired metal hatch onto his back (no photo yet).

I'm pretty much done otherwise except for some details I'm adding to the tentacles arm.

EDIT: I also removed the noose. I thought it made the figure too busy looking.
Thanks for looking

Here is the painted Flesh Golem. It's literally the first miniature I've ever painted. Obviously I have a lot of room for improvement.

Spoiler:

I know that practice is the main way to improve, but any feedback is welcome.

Thanks for looking.

Here is the other figure I made for my friends D&D Homebrew game:

Spoiler:

It's a Spectator; basically a Beholder Lite.

I'm really happy with sculpt, it was a lot of fun to make. Everything is scratch sculpted except for the smoke/ether holding him up, which I think is from a Disc of Tzeentch. I think the paint is an improvement over the Flesh Golem, but I still have a long way to go. But it's literally the second miniature I've ever painted, so I'm reasonably proud of it. I might go back and give the teeth a wash coat.

Next up I'm working on a Vampire Queen on a massive throne and a Tombstone Golem that I'm really excited about. I have a Mindflayer started too, but it'll probably get sidelined until the Queen and Golem are done.

Thanks for looking.

The heads I ordered for my Flesh Golem came the other day. They were too late for the Flesh Golem so I just set this in my pile of newer bits. Then I started tinkering while looking at some Inq28 blogs, and came up with:

Big 'ead

I'm sure I'm not the first person to do this, but I love it!

Thanks for looking

After a misstep of trying to make non-compatible Termie front and back torso pieces fit together, I found some other torso pieces to bash together.

I added a cybernetic eye with matching scars, AND a Inquisition icon attached to his forehead. I trimmed down a 40k Iron Cross, added some thin plasticard bits for the crossbars and cut a small skull of some Grey Knight weapon.

Thanks for looking.

I've been working in a lot of conversions for an upcoming Savage Worlds Fantasy game at a local Con.

First up is the Centaur Lancer.

Here is the original mini:

I removed the very crooked and less imposing original lance, and test fitted a Vampire Counts bit:

I'm strongly opposed to boob plate armor and decided to use a 40K Scion chest piece. This is my first time working with Reaper Bones material, and I am not a fan; but I'm stubborn so I'm going to make it work. I had to cut of about 60% of the torso to make room for the chest armor bit:

Next I took two banners, cut them down and sanded to back to start to for Crupper armor:

I patch the gap in between the two banners bits with Green Stuff, which I then filed and sander smooth:

I converted of the top pieces from the banners I cut down to finish the from of the Crupper, and added a shield to help hide the seems on the left side:

Next I did a very simple conversation to a D&D Orc Banebreaker Rider, replace the Battle Axe arms with a Vampire Count(?) Halberd/Spear and a Fryeslayer Shield which I'll attach after I paint it:

I did another simple conversion to a D&D/Pathfinder Orc Mini, here is the original mini:

Here is the converted mini, I replaced the Greatsword with a Empire Greatsword Greatsword, and the bow and quiver with a Stormcast Eternals Judicators Quiver, which I'm using as Javelins:

Working on conversions for my D&D game.

I bulked up the axe on this Reaper Bones Ogre, giving it a chopped stone texture. I reposition a Warlord Games horse in it’s left hand. I still have some filling, detail work and sanding to do, but am happy with the posing.
