I was tempted to do this as a poll, but I fear the options would be rather restricting, so I've not bothered.

Nice and simple question, what's your preferred time scale for a given game?

Me, I'm fairly flexible, but I do prefer a longer time at the table. I don't get to game terribly often these days due to work and commuting, so I prefer to feel like I'm getting what I can only inaccurately and misleadingly call 'my monies worth'.

If I've got a bunch of opponents lined up, I can make an afternoon or evening's gaming on X-Wing or MTG - the games themselves might be quite quick (X-Wing has never lasted more than half an hour for me) - but generally I prefer a 40k or AoS game of around 2,000 points. I find I can rattle through those within a couple of hours, or three if we're being particularly laid back.

How about you?

Around 2 hours for a "standard game" is good. Makes it easier to fit into and evening. Also I can then play smaller games if I have less time or be relaxed and still be done in 3.

Depends on how good the game is. I don't mind getting stuck into a 4 hour game, if it's a damn good game. I'd say 2-3 hours is perfectly normal/acceptable to me.

I'd say the 1 to 3 hours range, erring on the side of 1 hour. I can rarely organise a 3 window with my mates to play a game these days.

For a 1 vs 1 game anything over 2 hours starts to feel grindy, multi-player it kind of depends, anything over the 3 hour mark might be trying but variables like whose playing, if the booze is flowing, are there any crisps left are a factor

2 hours would be perfect but with unpacking minis , setting up terrain, choosing mission type I'd say 3 is more reasonable.

1-2 hours is what I would consider good (mostly play X-wing). Lets me get 2 or 3 games in a single afternoon. 3 hours is also acceptable (a relaxed game of Armada), but should be rarer. That said, the occasional larger-than-normal game can be a blast, and a great way to spend a relaxing weekend.

2 Hours is the limit for me. I really can't commit to that insane 3 hour 2k+ Points 40k games. I don't care how long the setup it - but in an event or even a friendly game you don't want to waste 4 hours on a Saturday with one game.

I prefer 60-90 minutes but I don't really mind 2 hours either. I just enjoy how the shorter games make multiple games possible.

I'll put it differently - not a single game, but a single session. In my case this is 5-6 hours straight, often with the whole weekend reserved for gaming if I play at home. This reduces "overhead" of preparation/commute time per hour of actual play. How many actual games and points per game depends on mood, scenario, number of players etc...

60-90 minutes, that way more than one game can be had in an afternoon. These 2-3 hours games are ok...but usually it's a one a day gaming session.

That was the one thing I really liked about MTG, most games were short, so you could get multiple games in easily.

2 hours.

Anything more than 2.5 hours and I've mentally checked out. 3+ hours and I deliberately start making bad moves just to end the game.

Once the game gets going proper, I want at least 1-1.5 hours, but I also really don't want to go over 2.5-3 hours either.

I want the game to be significantly longer that setup time, but I don't want it much longer than watching basketball game on TV either.

1-2 hours. After that any game starts to become a drag and the mind starts to wander.

2 hours for a pick-up game at the FLGS, though if it's with friends and there is beer/snacks involved I have enjoyed a 4 hour game. Or if I'm expecting/wanting a large game I can last probably 6 hours for an apoc game while still having fun.

I'm quite flexible too, but i tend to prefer not to have a battle during more than 3 or max 4 hours in the biggest ones. Especially for it often implies the battle's turning into some kind of no brain slaughter and also because in my experience it tends to put a bit pressure on the players, even if it's nothing wild or offensive, that makes the atmosphere way less friendly to me.

the 1-2 hour mark is the sweet spot for me. It means either I can get a quick game in when a longer game means I wouldn't be able to play at all, or I can get 2-3 games in rather than one long one. It also means you can do little mini campaigns and whatnot in one go which is awesome.

Sometimes it's fun to play a big epic battle that lasts 4 hours, but if that's the "standard" game length I find I play little or not at all.

One hour games would be ideal for me. Our club only meets every other thursday, so it's nice to be able to get in more than one game/opponent a night. Song of Blades and Heroes and Necromunda are great for this.

This rarely happens though, and I'm fine with 2 hour games. Once you get near 3 I get a bit bored.

I target for:
- 1-2 hours for ordinary 1v1 games.
- 4-6 hours for Apocalypse team games.
More than that is probably too long. Shorter can be OK, though.

My club runs from 5.15 to 10.15, and at the moment I get there around 6.30. 3 hours is about right for me. multiple short games just means more time spent setting up and taking down, and less time playing.

On the other hand, I take part in an annual 24-hour gaming event for charity; that's time to break out the 14-hour session of Twilight Imperium III.

This has changes a lot over the years depending on my time capacity for longer games.

As a youngster a full day (8 hours) for a relaxed multi-player game was great. Now, I am lucky to finish a game that is two hours long in a single sitting.

I hope/image that as I get older I will be able to have more of the longer gaming sessions again.

3 hours, because that fits into my games club night. Mind you, that includes making the odd cup of tea and blethering, so it's not 3 hours of non-stop "serious" gaming.

On the other hand, a 14-hour session of Twilight Imperium is a thing of wonder in its own way, so the answer to the question should really be "as long as I've got time for".
