So we ran into an interesting debate tonight...

My buddy I was playing with (tau vs space wolves) said that I couldn't assault him because I A) was a dreadnought and also that my thunderwolf cavalry couldn't either because they couldn't move up floors. His reasoning also included that they wouldn't fit on the stairs/ruin floors but also B) his units had the entire floor covered so there was no room for me to be in base to base contact with him on the floor they were on even if I had units that would fit, like my Wulfen.

Is this accurate? One can just negate my assault by covering the floor they're on with their models? This happened a couple times and I just rolled with it as we didn't have access to a BRB at the time at the hobby store.

Hopefully I'm explaining this correctly. If not just tell me and I'll try to reword it.

Well both sides are mostly right.

While RAW wise you are unable to reach BTB you can't properly assault his units, but also due this being an incident related with ruins/scenorgaphy it may fall in the wobbly moddel syndrome, and allow it. (there is a FAQ example with a MC just charging straight and allowing it to attack tru a 2nd floor window cause it's big enough.. )

This happen due WH 40k rules aren't a tight set intended to cover all situations and sometimes it feels the Game Devs intended players to come with a half way solution to keep a more cinematic feel.

I actually found an answer to this in their Errata! It pretty much says use the WMS rule and that models can be in assault while on different levels if the charge is sufficient. Huzzah.

Also, everything can move up and down levels, no matter how much it doesn't make sense (see bikes driving up vertical walls).

Really? Well thank you.

I play so if you are directly beneath models by a floor, you are counted as in base contact for the purposes of assault

Me and friends play an alternate way where we just line up the assaulting models on the floor below in the same pattern that the enemy bases make as though they are climbing up to assault and the models move up/ down depending on pile in moves (we rule that the entire pile in move is used to ascend/ descend, rather than needing 3 inches and they occupy a space that another model occupied on that floor.)

Had something like this happen with Jump Infantry charging models on the second floor of a small building.

We measured the charge distance as from the base of the model on the ground to the base of the first model up stairs.

Due to wobbly models we placed some models on the floor below.

His scouts failed saves on the hammer of wrath and it was GG for the squad before we could even try and pile in anyway.

Not entirely certain we played it right, but it felt right, considering jump infantry can jump on top of a building. Also, i had move through cover, and all sorts of other bonuses, because Guilliman was within 12"
