I've personally never seen Scions as good for anything other than MEQ killers, so the meltas are wasted on them in my opinion.

You seem to be under-utilising your first platoon command. I'd drop the Scions (or the scion Command Squad at least, whack some plasma onto a regular scion squad or to the CCS) pop 4 meltas on the PCS. At BS3 you're only looking at 2 hits on average, but that's still better than what the Scion squad would achieve.

I wouldn't recommend meltas or plasma for your Infantry Squads, but don't underestimate the 5 point Grenade Launcher or Flamer. With the Flamer it's a nice deterrent for hordes or mobs that are getting a little close for comfort, and don't forget the automatic D3 hits from overwatch. With the Grenade Launcher, the Str3 blast is 'meh' but that Str 6 AP 4 single shot is a nice surprise for an opponent expecting puny lasguns.
Finally, Vets have to pay 10pts per squad for Krak Grenades while Infantry Squads can buy them 1pt per model. So just give a single guardsmen a krak grenade (the sprue comes with at least one throwing arm piece) and hold in the back. It's like an extra short-range GL for mere spare change.

These aren't game winning modifications by any means, but they give your IG squads a little more utility.

Essentially, drop that Scion Command Squad. Shift the plasma somewhere else and with the points you save from that a whole bunch of options for beefing up the rest of your force are now open to you.

Good luck!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also, if you're going to whack a commissar in a blob consider forking out the points for a power fist. They're overpriced for IG at 25pts, but they help negate that damn Strength/Toughness gap the IG will inevitably encounter.

Don't worry about him being singled out in a challenge, you can have your Sergeants accept instead while he tears away at the regular mooks with impunity.

I respectfully disagree with Humble Guardsman's about the meltas.  I've been deep striking sormtroopers with 2 meltas for almost 2 decades.  Sometimes they do zilch and sometimes they blow up a Land Raider or other nasty vehicle on Turn 2.

Also, as stated on page 94 of the IG Codex, you must upgrade the entire squad with krak grenades rather than just 1 trooper.

I do agree with Humble Guardsman's other comments.  Your platoons need a bit more special weapon oomph and the points for that oomph might as well come from the scion command squad.  (I love running stormie command squads with 4 plasmas but in this list you'd be better off with the addind specials to your 2 platoons).  Also, consider moving the PCS vox to your CCS, getting a 2nd commie or a priest so both blobs can effectively be fearless, and give your CCS a heavy or a special.

Good luck!

Deep-strike meltas are nothing to sniff at, that's true. But it's hard to argue that it's anything but one-way trip for the most part, perhaps one a little too expensive for a small list. You're looking at 12% of your army worth put into two BS4 Melta shots at rear armour. Not bad, but odds are you won't get that juicy melta bonus range for the first shot either unless you are ballsy with your deep-strike.

I'm not saying I wouldn't do it, I have in the past, but I probably wouldn't do so in such a small list. Heck I'd fit in a LRBT in there before I turned to deep-striking scions. Something that will survive a little longer.

Also, as stated on page 94 of the IG Codex, you must upgrade the entire squad with krak grenades rather than just 1 trooper.

Infantry Squad, pg 94
"The entire squad may take krak grenades ...........(per model cost)"

Veteran Squad, pg95
"The squad may take krak grenades ...........(per squad cost) "

I'd take that to mean that, so long as you had some way of differentiating which model was grenade equipped, there's nothing stopping you from being picky with who you purchase krak grenades for in your infantry squads. I generally mark mine as a Corporal, so it stands out somewhat. The specific grenade-throwing pose is also an option.

Yes, you’re right, melta stormies are certainly risky and perhaps suicide units like this are better for higher points games. Also, you’re right, the wording on pages 94 and 95 could be interpreted either way.

My meta is pretty mellow so I’m sure they’d be cool with your 1 pt krak grenade interpretation (plus it’s not like the IG are overpowered anyway).

for the price of those stormtroopers and their guns you can run 4 wyverns. i love scions too. but take heavy weapons teams instead or wyverns.

I think everyones missing the formation effect? If the unit dies it gets put back into deepstrike and can be dropped again. Okay for objective games, invaluable for team death match games.

I'm not saying that isn't pretty neat, especially if you want to play the suicide-run melta way. I just think the points you're spending on that, in such a small list, would be better placed elsewhere.

There's no point in buying a 5pt vox-caster for your Platoon Command if you're not buying a vox-caster for anyone else. Identify who you plan on giving orders to.

You will probably want your combined autocannon squad to get the benefit of a nearby order, such as pinning/bring-it-down or FRFSRF. In that case get them a vox and your Company Commander one as well. Or you could not spend the points on a vox and instead rely on the attached Commissar's higher leadership to rely on that order getting through.

The Scion command has orders anyway, but aside from perhaps Suppression Fire I'm not sure what would be useful for a Plasma squad.
