Hi guys,

I have been given the task of building a load of boxes of Dark Elves for my wife. This is the start of a new army for her so whats below is all she has for now......Although she does have a lot of high elves so can proxy spearmen and bolt throwers etc. With the following boxes what units and load outs do you suggest?

1x Dreadlord / Supreme Sorceress on Black Dragon

1x Supreme Sorceress on foot (was going to run as a normal sorceress for now)

1x Box of Doomfire Warlocks/ Dark Riders

2x Boxes of Dreadspears / Bleakswords / Crossbows (was thinking 2 units of 10 crossbows?)

2x Boxes of Black Arc Corsairs (1 unit of 20 but what load out??)

1x box of cold one knights (well not much else to do with them lol)

I was thinking the following:

Dreadlord on the dragon and kit him out for combat

Doomfire Warlocks

1 block of 20 crossbows

1 block of 20 Black Arc Corsairs with additional hand weapons

Any thoughts?

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I have completed buying my Warriors of Chaos, then bought my Vapire Counts and am half way through collecting Dark Elves.
It is not too late to get some and as far as I am aware all he units are still available.

1x Dreadlord / Supreme Sorceress on Black Dragon

- This is a nice kit, I was initially sceptical but found that the dragon armour is separate and can be left off. YMMV but having molded on armour was a deal breaker, the High Elf dragon looks fantastic but for the awful plates added to it. The armour coverage is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard also.
Th kit has four riders, two naked ladies and two plate armoured males, however each model has one one set of legs. I suggest taking a greenstuff mold of the rider legs so you have four character riders.
I suggest deep pinning the riders with a long dry pin from their bottom to (and through the saddle and into the dragons back. This way you will have a removable saddle (so you can use the dragon for naother faction role playing or other functions and can swap out the riders.
I also suggest you mix and match the riders torsos, so one of the armoured characters could take a female cold one knight torso, methinks your wife might like a dragon lady rather than a dragon lord anyway, and she will still have both options and multiple weapon variants. one sorceress is enough, however by greenstuff molding her legs and positioning them while wet you can have a sorceress on cold one as a fringe benefit, just grab a cold one for her. A lot you can do here to fill out your whole armies character selection with this kit.

1x Supreme Sorceress on foot (was going to run as a normal sorceress for now)
- The rank of a character model is always irrelevant unless they are a special character used as such. If a regular sorceress makes a better supreme sorceress in your option that is what she is. Technically all the dragon rider models above are supreme sorceresses also, so that means you technically have three. I smell a blood fued brewing, better if thier general demotes two before they lose the assets.

1x Box of Doomfire Warlocks/ Dark Riders

- Doomfire Warlocks are broken win buttons, this is partly why I am going to build mine as Dark Riders. If you magnetise at the waist you can have both. Buy a second box.

2x Boxes of Dreadspears / Bleakswords / Crossbows (was thinking 2 units of 10 crossbows?)
- Does your wife like the newer or older dark elf warrior models, I prefer the new ones, but a lot of players don't like them. Units of ten work but I would go for units of 18 with full command, aesthetically it looks just right. Ignore aesthetics if you will. I would get more though, get spearmen or 'Dreadspears' according to GW's Department of Stupid Names

2x Boxes of Black Arc Corsairs (1 unit of 20 but what load out??)
- Dual wield them, however because they are irregular piratey miniatures you could take a real mix and declare loadout. They look awesome though.

1x box of cold one knights (well not much else to do with them lol)
Ok, I suggest you buy a second box. Five knights is ok, but its a minimum, 6-7 is better. However they do not easily rank up, and to get them to rank up at all you have to play around with the basing. I dont recommend bothering, just take a single rank. They do well though and have a lot of punch for their size. Also supporting ranks don't include the cold one, and frankly after the charge that is the main asset in a drawn out fight.
So one box, unit of five, possibly with reduced command, or two boxes, with a unit of up to eight with full command and two spare cold ones for characters from the dragon set.
If this is wasteful try and find a couple of cold ones in ebay.

Things to look at

Witch Elves and Cauldron. - If you take one take both, maximum synergy is at thirty Witch Elves.

War Hydra - I used the Reaper Bones hydra miniatures.

Cold One chariot - I used the extra beastmaster crew as handlers for Reaper Bones hydras, the extra horses make alternate mounts for characters and sorceresses so you dont need to buy a second cold one knight box. You could take the Scourgerunner chariot instead, its more expensive and not as good IMHO.

Bolt throwers - Note that there are three types, all use the same rules you can buy any of the three types on ebay at reasonable prices. I got the 1995 pattern ones with a horizontal bow and two magazine stacks,

Harpies - Not easily available from GW. Buy Mantic Abyssal Gargoyle miniatures for this, they look the part and are better sculpts and a fraction of the price.

Shades - Not made mine yet, but I will be doing so by using Dark Eldar wyches as the base model, converting as needed. Corsair bits help here, an you will have plenty of those. Its a common enough thing done, they make excellent shades. I am thinking of giving mine a who mixed loadout including some with no missile weapons, some with twin crossbows and a squad heavy weapon - the large harpoon crossbow from the scourgerunner chariot. They all will average out as regular Shades.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

Thanks chap that is really helpful. Good shout on pinning and magnetizing I had not thought about that.

She is actually fond of the new dark elf aesthetics so will be getting a few more boxes of the rank and file guys for sure.

I have always thought that the dark eldar kits could make good witches, not thought about the shades though.

She is currently running Lilith as an Assassin, its the first miniature I purchased for her to paint (as she wanted to give it ago) but had no interest in 40k thought she would look right at home with the dark elves.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Witcxhes make the best witches, but the boxsets are criminally priced.

I mitigate pricing by using Triple Helix Wargames as my go to, plus ebay or forum swaps.

If you are lucky you can find boxsets of Vestals of Nemesis which are not-Witch Elves from Avatars of War. They were cheap but are inferior sculpts, ok but with a lot of cleanup to do. Avatars of War character miniatures are superb, their unit boxsets less so.

Lastly a good source for cheap witch elves would be to use Mantic succubus models. You will get a large unit for a fraction of GW prices, but they are as you might imagine demons not elves. However conversion might not be too difficult. I am just suggesting here, I havent done this or know anyone else who has, but I did consider it.
For the record decided to suck up the price for GW witch elves, because I really like the sculpt. I haven't bought this yet and its one of the reasons my Dark Elf collection is still a work in progress. The elite infantry boxsets are criminally priced, so its little by little. You may well finish collecting Dark Elves long before I do..

Yeah Lisa's original job lot above was from Triple Helix which saved a packet! I have used the Kings of War Trolls for my Goblins to good success so not bothered about using other systems.

I have looked at the Avatars of War stuff, on their site it looks great (Chaos warriors and Dwarfs) not looked at the elf stuff. Shame to hear the regiments aren't that hot.
