So i haven't seen as much hype online as i expected for the news of a new faction. Possibly because we all fear it may be some marines with a different paint job.

Still, what do people think/hope?

(Squats ... had to say it to save anyone else the bother)

Grey Knights - 3500pts
SKitarii - 4000pts
Ad mech - 2000pts
Imperial Knights - 1000pts
Black Templars - 3200pts
Genestealer cults - 1750

I agree with what someone else said. New factions at launch will Super Ultramarines (Guilliman's Chosen) and Death Guard (splitting them off from main CSM faction).

With the Imperium split in twain we might actually see the emergence of a mankind faction not strictly aligned with Terra, I would not expect much though.

They said factions, plural, slip of the tongue or otherwise, I think we can assume at least two. I don't think I'm alone in hoping they won't just cram another two power armor factions down our throats. There hasn't been a new race since the Tau, so my hope is for a new xenos, maybe Rak'Ghoul, or the old ones returning.

My ultimate hope is something that can go between AoS and 8th ed that isn't chaos daemons.

I really doubt there will be brand new factions, more factions just split off from current factions. Just my opinion, happy to be wrong.

I have a feeling it could be sisters, yes they aren't new. But they may be getting a whole new model line.

A new alien race would be awesome, but an army of something like human exodites would also be awesome, maybe even something inspired from ancient civilizations of some sort, maybe polytheistic with a different unit based off a different god from human history- Nepalese/Indian?

Just a thought, probably not needed in the game though.

You are new to 40k aren't you? At least new to 40k on the internet? I can tell, because you talked about sisters getting plastic models.

I don't know about multiple new factions, but my money would be on deathguard being one of them.

given they've said that they really wanna give chaos it's due and that it'd be something new, I almost suspect it'll be a double dose of chaos.

Wouldn't mind a dedicated mech guard, that's not Cadian.

You say Fiery Crash! I say Dynamic Entry!

*Increases Game Point Limit by 100*: Tau get two Crisis Suits and a Firewarrior. Imperial Guard get two infantry companies, artillery support, and APCs.

Didn't they say we will "see new factions, we've never seen before, possibly even at launch"?

Because that wouldn't fit for Death Guard nor NuMarines. We know Death Guard and have seen it, and bigger Marines are not really something new.
Squats and Sisters also don't fit this description. Sorry. Which doesn't mean they won't get a possible update.

So it's possibly really new factions.

I think people should expect with 8th, what we have seen with AoS.

No existing factions from old WHFB have been updated with new models, really.

Some factions have had new books with no models (Seraphon, Flesh Eaters, Beastclaw, Bonesplitterz, Pestilens), and two factions have been splintered off and branched out (pun intended), with the Dyrad elements of Wood Elves becoming the core of the Sylvaneth, and the End Times Khorne moving into Bloodbound.

In general though, every faction has been brand new.

If you were a Dwarf player in WHFB, has your army been updated? Not really, instead there have been two new "dwarf" (now Duardin) factions, Fyreslayers and Kharadron.

If you're a Warriors of Chaos player in WHFB, has your army been updated? Not really, because again Bloodbound and Tzeentch Arcanites are completely new factions and seperate from the old Warriors of Chaos (now Slaves to Darkness).

This is a definite break away from the old model of; faction receives new codex/army book with a new kit or two.

So I expect for basically every faction to be new, and old factions to not get direct model updates.

My guess is, New Space Marines will be their own faction and Death Guard will be their own faction. I imagine Ynnead Aeldari will come near the start too. After that I think it's impossible to know what the new factions will be, but I don't think you'll see a Tyranid (for example) update, instead you'll see a new tendril of the hive fleets enter the Galaxy that'll be a completely new faction in its own right (although likely able to be allied to Tyranids and GSC).

we'll have to see. there are an aweful lot of things barely touched on by GW that are mentioned in the fluff. I have a hunch chaos is gonna get a lot of early stuff, IOMs sitting good, and GW has said they wanna give chaos some love. a dark mechnium maybe?

This makes a lot of sense. They seem to be doing this to a degree with 40k already. Genestealer Cults could have been a Tyranid relaunch. The Traitor Legions supplement could have been a full on Chaos codex revamp, but instead was about new Magnus model, Tzaangors and kicking off the Coming Storm. Which was again about new stuff in preparation for the new edition. As is The Talons of the Emperor and it's free warscoll like mini-codex.

The sense I'm also getting is that the old can get folded in with the new. The new Khorne battletome folded in existing bloodletter and juggernaut models, the bloodthirster and others. So while they didn't do an AoS update of the 8th edition Daemons of Chaos Army Book, the old stuff found a home. I'm guessing that when they get around to doing a Nurgle book, it's going to incorporate the array of Nurgle models released in the End Times period as the nurgle daemons released during 8th's update to Chaos Daemons.

So while I expect only new factions (inside of which I would include combining previous armies in new ways) for pretty much all of the new edition of 40k, I think they'll redistribute and fold in a lot of the existing ranges in a way that makes sense given the new factions.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

Wow that is an interesting idea, maybe all the current Tyranids are just scout/vanguard organisms and the true battlefleets are yet to arrive! A scary thought.

I can see the sense in what you chaps are suggesting about faction updates, like the massive leakage of the warp causing Orks to grow to great size and ferocity until suddenly the Ironjaws come to town.
I'm a little worried about the core factions being left behind but more faction variety is always appreciated.

They are throwing away profit if they don't port over Squats from AoS. Sadly Death Guard and Guillimarines are more likely.

They're throwing away nothing.
I personally would avoid playing against Squats if they even existed.
I'd probably want to puke every time I hear about them, like Roughriders.

The new faction is probably the TauTau, some upstart nice looking patentable alien race from beyond the stars with lots of new shiny toys.

I suspect three possibilities:

Cult Mechanicus, Skitarii and Imperial Knights merged into one AdMech force.

SoB, Inquisition, Grey Knights and other Imperial Agents merged into one "inquisition" faction

Chaos Renegades. This is a long time coming.

I'd swear I just saw a leaked photo of the new Starter and it was Ultras vs. Death Guard with new models. Can't find it in google now though.

Expanding on Chaos seems the most obvious bet. Going from the website they created, the Chaos section really is the smallest. The most obvious choice for a 'new' faction will likely just be Death Guard if you consider Thousand Sons a 'new' faction as well.

We had old rumors that indicated a loyalist and traitor legion would flip sides. We also have the Planet of Sorcerers leave the warp and is now in real space. Should be interesting to see where the setting goes from here.

I think a book giving rules for different IG regiments, and new plastic minis for them would be pretty dope.

I hope so as well, but I'm not holding my breath. The narrative seems to be going full blown Primarch vs Primarch mode. They even said themselves the focus in the story, more than ever, is Imperium vs Chaos. Doesn't sound like there's much room for a split there.

I absolutely love your avatar btw.

To be fair, there's no way to know this is a picture of the new starter. It could just as easily be a shot of people playing for a paphlet or a section in the rules explaining collect - build - paint - play concepts.

can't tell what's in that picture are those Necrons?

*Edit* So zoomed into the point where it was like Rubix cubes, I think it looks like a Necron destroyer on the bottom left, obvious clear base hover base with a split in the model, with arms sticking out, kind of like:

but the left most model looks like a tau stealth suit, note the bulbous body and the fusion blaster I think?

The bottom models look like pathfinders mixed with something flesh colored, maybe flayed ones? So unless the new box for 8th is a combo of necrons and tau vs. ultramarines, I don't think this is it.

If you zoom in on the photo, it's heavily pixelated, but they definitely looks like the Death Guard models previewed earlier this month.
