The idea was presented over in the Nu40k rumor thread and I think it would be a good addition to the selection. Something like an ork head next to a green hand sprinkling pixel salt would be much appreciated!

Just some examples of ork head/hand orkmoticons that already exist.

Interesting. Thanks. I'll have to see if I can make one as a decidedly noob untalented non-artist then. :(

edit: a quickie attempt(s) over lunch with some free web programs.

Awesome!

Can you make it so the salt eventually overtakes the Ork head?

Thanks for all the positive responses. I wasn't kidding when I said I was a noob with only a little knowledge. The salt emoticon is based off of the finger wagging one with the hand turned upside down and put up top, finger clipped down in length, salt sprinkles/pile added, and animation slowed down. Without the existing image as a basis, I'd have been clueless on how to even start. it took me 5 attempts to get the salt pile and sprinkles right (hence all the edits... turns out a perfectly symmetrical salt pile and repeated pattern of sprinkles looks unnatural!). I also made up a version that spelled S A L T one letter at a time with each frame and added it above.

@Nels: It's definitely possible but may defeat the point. Each frame is basically it's own picture (so a 4 frame animated GIF like the one above is effectively like downloading 4 different pics) which is why animated gifs take so long to load on slower connections/machines... at least according to my noob understanding. Making it so the pile would overtake the ork would add many more frames and be a bit against the purpose of a quickie tiny animation like an emoticon.

I think the first one is actually good enough to use already XD

Now how about an Orc playing the world's smallest violin? OI think someone proposed that ages ago, but obviously we didn't have a go getter around to actually make it

That's pretty awesome warboss

Have you considered trying one with the first frame of the ork face from this icon? It's a little more neutral and fits the "salt" idea to me without being angry, just confused:

There's also some great frames in this one that convey a dubious expression:

A salt shaker in the hand would also Really help, as I'm not totally sure people would understand what the first one is outside the context of this thread (and I like it best, too).

So I'd love to see those two tweaks (different expression, salt shaker in hand). Whenever it's finalized we'll run it up the chain and we'll see if yak/lego are up for adding it!

That one would be somewhat difficult to use without it coming across as rude.

Honestly I just want to see a little ork playing a little violin It's like leveling to lv. 100 before fighting the first boss in FFVII or building a functioning model of Pokemon Red in a minecraft server. You do it because it's awesome

Besides. Several of our Orkm oticons can be used extremely rudely (face palm being a stand out example).

@RiTides: The salt shaker is probably beyond my current ability but I should be able to add the incredulous ork face (minus maybe the bug eyes) to the gif tomorrow. Thanks for finding it!

@Lordofhats: Sadly, the violin probably fits into the same category as the salt shaker for the moment. Fingers crossed if I can find one at a latter date and shrink it down to only a few pixels across and still have it be recognizable.

I can dream

Bet you could slap a wizard hat on the Ork and make the salt blue and BOOM Magic Orkmoticon!

Whoah... That dubious orkmoticon with the googlie eyes is 16 partially drawn apparently additive frames for the eyes/eyebrows instead of full facial pics every animation (probably to save on file size). I'm afraid incorporating that is beyond my level of understanding and would require someone with actual knowledge and not just an amateur tweaking.

Here's a slowed down text version of the handful of salt with text orkmoticon in case the letters scrolled too quickly before.

If I had to pick one, I'd say choose the one in this post as I think the SALT reference might be necessary to convey meaning similar to the SOAP orkmoticon. Yak/Lego, feel free though to use any or none of them as you wish. RiTides, it's pretty much final for the salt orkmoticon so if you could pass it on to the powers that be that would be appreciated. Thanks to all again for the kind feedback. If I work on the violin one then I'll bump the thread here at a later date with the progress.

It's not possible to just use a single frame from the dubious ork face?

Could you point me to the free software you mentioned you're using, I might take a crack at a few more tweaks . Yak's not going to really be online much for another two weeks, so we've got a little time before he can look at it anyway. I think we've got the best shot at approval with a little less angry face as otherwise we'd get angry orks all over N&R!

Only the very first frame of a neutral face is a full facial frame. The rest are only lips, eyebrows, or eyes. The program I'm using is called Falco gif animator (an older version as it keeps telling me to update and I click no) but just make sure to check it with your antivirus software. When I first downloaded it years ago (to make a robotech gif for a dakka avatar ironically), either my malwarebytes or avast pinged that something was wrong with it and it needed to be cleansed. With trial and error you may be able to cut and paste parts of the face like a 1950's criminal sketch together into coherent faces.

Okay when yak is available in mid-May I'll propose it . But I do think we'd have a better chance of approval if it wasn't the angry ork face

I don't think that will actually be a factor in the approval process!

I stumbled on this thread and the thought of this amused me. So I quickly threw one together in GIMP.

I think it looks kinda violin-ish, maybe.

Cool! The only thing I'd suggest is giving the violin maybe some more curves to accentuate the shape. How did you open up or create the GIF in gimp? I tried opening my own gif first in gimp when I started this thread (I have that program too) but it only opened a single frame as if it were a normal image file.

I assume you used copy/paste, that just gives you one frame ("Pasted Layer" ). You need to save the picture to a drive, then open that from within gimp itself.

To save it, just export as "NameHere.gif" when you're done.

EDIT:

violin ork version 2

<- and the old for comparison
