Anyone else pick this up? Non-spoiler thoughts, please!

I got it last night and haven't had a chance to play. I loved the first one, for the most part. The gameplay mechanics got a bit repetitive, and when the story took a turn for the Sci-fi, I kind of checked out, but finished it to completion regardless. I replayed it once or twice but generally turned it off when you get to the "elevator going down" reveal. Never did the DLC though, I think another couple games came out around that time and I never got the interest back to return to the Asylum.

I've been actively avoiding spoilers and other gameplay additions in order for it to be fresh when I start. Hopefully some new mechanics were added to break up the monotony, and to differentiate it from all of the other "run/hide/run" games that seem to be dime a dozen.

I'll be back later tonight to report on my initial sitdown.

Haven't picked it up, but watched some Youtube plays. Looks pretty fun, and the story is pretty spooky.

Only saw some twitch playing of it and the previous one. Why is there so much damn schlong violence in this game. Seriously it's disturbing. This game is all sorts of messed up though so far.

I kinda wanted to get it, I have the first one but haven't played it. A game reviewer I like said it was a mundane and run of the mill game, and most modern horror games are garbage, anyway. They aren't even remotely creepy and usually revolve around hiding in a closet or something.

I'd hardly call it mundane, unless you refer to the gameplay. Yeah, it's a lot of sneaking and hiding, but A) that plays better to the fethed up story and B) these type of games (Outlast 1, Amnesia, Alien: Isolation) you play more for the story and horror vibe. Having a typical actiony game would kill that vibe.

Maybe I just love murder fantasy simulators, but I don't really like pure stealth games.

I mean, amnesia games seem just boring. I tried SOMA for a bit, but just couldn't get into it.

That being said, the outlast games look pretty great. But I never got around to giving them a shot.

Maybe I should - I liked alien: isolation a lot more than I thought I would have. maybe because in it you did have some weapons, or at least tools, you could use.

To be honest, you probably won't like Outlast then. It's fun, but plays pretty much like Amnesia. Come for the story, not the gameplay.

It isn't boring when it scares your pants off.

That said, I really preferred Amnesia. Outlast, and Outlast 2 as well, have splendid stories, are well made, and are also immensely disturbing. But they have too many jumpscares. I don't like jumpscares. They are cheap shock material. I want to whimper in a dark corner while ominous music plays and something unknowable gargles outside the door, or hell, hiding in a corner with nothing there at all. That is successful gameplay. Atmospheric. The most effective monster is the one who you either never see, or at most see in a glimpse in the darkness, from a distance.

As an example.

See 8:00 in the video. Sure, it scared me right off my chair, but it is just a blargharghla monster in your face jumpscare. It's cheap.

I disagree. Even in the video you linked, sure, there are jump scares, but most of it is creeping away from villagers or running and hiding. Jump scares are maybe 20% of the game. Most of the time you know where your enemies are.

I have played and really liked stealth games like Splinter Celll, Thief, ETC. It's only the "horror" game that piss me off.

I don't play games for plotline. that's what books and movies are for, and most game plotlines (even the "good "ones) I think are crap anyway. No, having an action vibe doesn't kill it if it has a good atmosphere and sound design helps a lot. In fact not having anyway tg defend yourself is annoying and it isn't fun. If you were any of those situations why would you not find a weapon to defend yourself with? I liked the horror games were you were actually able to attack things, but had a reason for not doing it/ or being careful about it. The only reason I played Alien Isolation as much as I did was only because it was an Alien game. Like the rest of these games, it wasn't scary, it was tedious.

And I heard the plotline wasn't any good anyway, and I believe it. Not only do I not care, and most games have crappy narratives IMO, but I've seen A LOT of horror and exploitation films that are way more depraved/shocking and have been desensitized to it for the most part, so if it can't carry itself on it's gameplay, I'm not getting it. Manhunt is is still probably my favorite survival horror because it was actually fun to play. I would probably like Amnesia if I played it more, and Call of Cthulu was one I really liked until it turned into a mediocre fps halfway through. The only reason I actually bother lloking at any of them is because I've always liked horror films and books, even though those aren't scary either. I just like the general subject matter. So either I've been completely desensitized or everyone else is easily freaked out.

20% is too much. Jump scares are to horror what fart jokes are to humor.

I mean, I don't dislike the game. I think it's amazingly disturbing on atmosphere alone. But jump scares do not add anything good to that experience.

You're probably right. It's a bit of a pity, as the first outlast looks pretty good, but I suspect it's not for me.

Kind of feel the same way about borne/souls games. They just seem too frustrating to be enjoyable. I know a lot of people love them, but I play games to have fun, not to get pissed off.

I disagree on the last statement. Rarely do I feel pissed off with Borne/Souls games. Sure, you may get killed by some unfair traps, but most of it is very much your fault. Most deaths are rarely "unfair", rather you're just not good enough. It's fun in the "Learn from your mistakes and constantly get better" variant, a lot like the hardcore NES/PC games of old.

Well, after my initial excitement from getting this game purchased and installed, I finally had a chance to give it a go...

Not sure what it is, but I can't get into it. Its not really drawing me in. I'm not gonna refund it, but save it for a rainy day. By Saturday I should have a new rig set up and I'll try again with max settings.

The end went by too fast. The buildup with Knoth, the hidden Murkoff operation, etc was all dismissed too quickly.
