Hello,
Getting back into 40k with a brand new purchase of new 20 TS marines, 10 Terminators, and a box of exalted sorcerers. About to purchase the Wrath of Magnus set.
Looking for any advice on what's good what's not, tacitics, things I should look out for. I haven't played in years so looking to get back into the swing of things and paint these awesome models. And to field a primarch at some point.

What data card sets should I also be on the hunt for?

Thanks

First off, I'd hold off on the wrath of magnus books, as there's a new edition coming out in a matter of weeks and it's going to invalidate the old books rules, although not necessarily the fluff.

The models you have, plus magnus seem like a great core, but until the new rules come out I'd hesitate to buy anything else just yet.

Personally I'd suggest getting what you have painted and tabletop ready in the meantime.

The new edition is coming out soon, but if all goes well, the armies will be more balanced, you might even be able to field rubrick Marines! You could have your army ready and painted by then!

Wow so I just spent the last hour reading all the updates from GW community on FB and have to say I have mixed feelings. I'm excited becuase the AOS rules actually grew on me which looks like 40k is headed in the same way. Simplier, faster, but will not be easy to master with the way things could stack in your favor. (Bloodbound) And worried about the unknown and how it'll effect the thousand sons.

Guess I'll just build and magnetize the models that have special/heavy weapons and paint paint paint. Well hears to the new way of WAR!!!!! Flamers sound deadly.

Also sounds like FW models could be played without needing opponents permission which sounds sweet as I see a new contemptor and non daemonic Magnus on the way.

Unrelated but I am very happy with the proposed changes, a bit worried if its gonna become hero hammer like AOS, but I much prefer AOS to 40k, 30k is good but not very complicated.

Well 2 things of note already, a terminator passes a 2+ save on 1D6 the exact same amount of the time it passes a 5+ save on 2d6. This means expect your new rubrics to be just as effective against TEQ as your old. However, if SW:A is any indication, marines are going to get a 6+ save against inferno bolts now, which is a downgrade. They are also specifically tailoring the psychic phase to prevent Magnus from dominating, so expect him to show up less in small point games than he currently does. With the changes to blast templates and how they work, I'd expect the Exaulted Sorceror's boom shot to be slightly better. No idea on the DP's but hella wounds is gonna be good, able to be wounded by everything is bad, we'll see how it shakes out.

I think with the direction they are headed, emphasizing balance and play testing, psyker-star and deathball setups should probably expect some nerfing, but relative to everyone else you are still designed with the same advantages and core strengths as before. Good army, good time to play it. Ol' Nipplehorns is riding high.

Yup, hold off on buying books.

The 1k sons are very detailed and taking a long time for me to paint. Though with a family I am lucky to get 2 six hour nights a week to.model.

This week 40k FB is going to preview Rubric Marines. Since this is the first unit showcased outside nilly marines I am expecting them to not disappoint...

Hmm, kinda unrelated, but on the topic of flamers and 8th edition? A unit of Rubrics with the new flamers could be downright nasty considering the amount of hits they could generate and their lower 'AP' not mattering as much as it used to.

I hear you. Maybe a slow move stat will replace Slow and Purposeful and allow for overwatch. Cheaper cost hope fully to.upgrade.

Seems the warpflame issue could be solved by replacing it with Soul blaze and give the Icon something else.

That seems to be the case. Rubric Marines have a 5" move (the aspiring sorcerer has 6"), but there's no indication from this Datasheet that they can't Overwatch.

Also, anyone noticed the warpflamers? They seem pretty darn useful in 8th.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

The warpflamers look very good indeed. Clearly in narrative play they are the superior choice to bolters. Hard to say if their worth it without knowing the matched play points.

I wouldn't say "clearly". They ARE sluggish, and flamer has short range, I'd say that packing a few would be good, but bolters should be the focus.

Don't forget that pistols are supposedly making a big comeback in 8th. So I imagine MSU units of tsons with warpflamer pistols on the aspiring champions could be great for overwatch and if the enemy makes tactical retreats.
