Shstop.
This codex, is not ready yet.

Wait for 8th to drop for tactical choices.

Otherwise, get what looks cool.

As Captyn_Bob mentioned, wait for 8th before buying more.

If money is burning a hole in your pocket, pick up another unit of flamers. They are likely to be very good in the next edition.

What's interesting is helldrakes might be a valid daemon choice next edition.

Yo, this is really important. Please elaborate why

Well if chaos if just one book and all options are valid , then you can just take whatever . Daemon lists will probably all trigger command abilities on the daemon keyword, which the helldrake will have.
Obvioualy this is a total guess.

Yeah, they do seem more like daemons and less like possesed space marines anyway.

Ofc they might be terrible in the new rules. But thematically yeah, i want them as a daemon unit.

Currently grinders suffer from the 'stomp bait'. The forgehost is good, but it's not hyper-competitive. I've had some pretty good luck with cursed earth, marks of tzeentch, and playing with the warp storm table to give them a 3++ rerolling 1s. It's a bit situational, but when I got that combo off for 2 turns in a row, they were able to wreck some face.

In the next edition, we don't know how they will do. Currently they are one of the only vehicles with a save. In the next edition we have seen that dreadnoughts will have a 3+ save. If the soul grinder winds up a T8 creature with 12 wounds and only a 5++ save, they will be a about as durable as a T7, 8 wound, 3+ save creature. This is because the 3+ save is twice as durable as the 5+ save. The actual durability depends on the weapons used. Lascannons would be better against dreads, autocannons about the same, bolters better vs grinders.

We also know that heavy weapons will impose a -1 to hit. The harvester cannon and warp gaze are heavy. We can expect phlem to be the same. This means grinders will be hitting 1/3 of the time where marine dreads or hellbrutes will be hitting 1/2 of the time. I might be wrong, but I don't think grinders will be really great at ranged attacking any more.

Finally, there is the cost. Currently a grinder of tzeentch with torrent is 160 points. A marine dread is 100 stock. Since dreads now have 4 attacks, they are a better point buy. If grinders remain at ~160 points, they just won't be cost effective when compared to dreads.

This is all just guesswork. We know that GW engaged the best resource they have (tournament players) to work on playtesting. I know that many of the guys at FLG love daemons and would have tested this army out. They would have spotted all the things I mentioned. I hope the price of grinders has been adjusted to ~100 points. At that price point they would be decent options.

Honestly I would expect Soul Grinders to get at least a 3+ armor save. Dreadnoughts currently (7th edition) have AV 12/12/10 and 3 hullpoints, and as stated in 8th they will have T7 with a 3+ save and 8 wounds. Soul Grinders currently have AV 13/13/11 and 4 hullpoints, so I would expect them to get at least a 3+ armor save, and very possibly T8 as well, with 9-12 wounds. I seriously doubt they will have to make do with just their 5++. Weaponwise I think the flamer will end up being the best option, although we don't know how large blast weapons will work in 8th, only templates (which are d6 automatic hits). So we really don't know how well the phlegm will do. Warp Gaze is already a crap shoot, so I don't expect it to be any better in 8th, other than probably dealing more damage if it does connect.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

I would like for grinders to get a 3+ as well. I hope you are right.
The reason I don't think they will get a 3+ is because the model has flesh for half of the model. Dreads are armored beasts.
I do expect them to have 12 HPs, just based off the size of the model.
