Keeping it 7th ed discussion here...

Consider the following DG Lord:
Lord with MoN, Plaguebringer, Poweraxe, Palanquin, Sigil, Gift of Mutation
205pts (+5 if wanting MBs)
The Lord is exceptionally durable with W5, T5, 3+/4++/5+++(rerolling 1's). He also puts out either 6 st5 ap2 I1 attacks or 6+d6 st4 ap3 I4 4+ poisoned attacks on the charge. If he is your Warlord the Warlord traits are insanely good for him aside from the contagion one which is average. +1 to FnP adds 50% durability to anything below st10 (more when you consider the rerolls of 1), +1W takes him to 6 (!), IWND is decent for a model with so many wounds that will be sticking around, whilst Eternal Warrior will make him nigh-on invincible (his weakness is st10 and other ID). Even the +1 to poisoned attacks is amazing, meaning with the daemon weapon he wounds on a 3+ (with reroll if his strength is above their toughness) and with the axe, it effectively grants it shred against T4 and below targets with how poison works. Being able to re-roll this trait is excellent too. His durability will be higher than most MC's whilst also being able to hide inside a squad.

Gift of Mutation can grant absolutely epic results for this model (I've put an X in brackets next to the epic results imo). Another chance at Eternal Warrior (X), +1T (for T6 and psudo EW) (X), +1S (combined with poison and so many attacks this is great) (X), ID attacks (X), +1I (to take him back to hitting before most opponents), +1 armour save is huge on such a tough model (X), rerolling armour saves makes him insane (X), straight up Shred will massively increase his damage output against T4 and above, Icy Aura will help against hordes, Fleshbane helps against anything that is T4 and above, +1W is obviously good, Shrouded to combine with Stealth is pretty handy if near cover, poisoned attacks make his axe excellent if needing to use it for ap2 (but is wasted on the DW) and Hatred is very useful with that many attacks. Adamantium Will, Crusader, Fleet, HoW, +1WS and the witch eater one are all advantages but very 'meh' advantages. Multiple Boons is obviously great (X). The ones that add literally nothing are; FnP, +1BS, Gunmorph, Stubborn and anything with a 1 rolled for the 10 result.

so 7/32 chance of an Epic result, 9/32 chance of a good result, 6/32 chance of a 'meh' result and 10/32 chance of a worthless result
But in a Chaos Warband you get to roll twice and select which one you prefer therefore you get a 39% chance at an epic result and a 75% chance of at least a good result (also including Epic results). Worth the gamble for 10pts imo.

Give one of your CSM squads in the Vectorium a Dreadclaw, join him in there and the Lord will be able to pick whoever he wants to assault on Turn 2. Warning - If taking a 7 man squad with the claw, 1 out 48 games on average he will be eaten by the claw before the game begins.

Wack in the standard Black Mace DP for extra threats and you're good to go ;-).

Note: You could do this with a Biker Lord for 20pts cheaper with +1T and 12" move but losing 2 wounds and 1 attack. With a Dreadclaw though, the movement is not as much of an issue. The advantage a biker lord has is the T6 against st10

What's your thoughts?

The Gift of Mutation wouldn't benefit from Favored Scions, since you're not actually getting the mutation due to Champion of Chaos. I'm definitely more in favor of the Palanquin for a Sorcerer over a standard Lord though; you're slightly cheaper, you get the free Force Axe, 4 Wounds vs 5 is less of a difference compared to 2 vs 3, and the Lore of Nurgle is actually pretty good. Finally, you can take Daemonology and make the character your Infernal Warpsmith, so you don't accidentally get eaten up.

Yeh the 'earned' part of the wording leaves that up to interpretation I suppose (unless the FAQ said otherwise?) I would have thought you earn it if you pay the points personally since its then been earnt through points. Still if somebody was unhappy to play with that interpretation, it's still worth the 10pts in that case I reckon.
The Sorcerer is a great idea - especially with the Infernal Warpsmith point. Id still be a bit dubious about losing so many stats though (WS/W/I/A will all be reduced by 1 - Initiative is the biggy with the combined DG reduction) but I do see the payoff on the flipside. You'd have to take ML2 at least to access the Daemonology at which point he'd be 5pts more expensive but would also have a force axe rather than just a power axe, 2 powers, 2WC, better denial and command over the Dreadclaw.
