I was about to jump into 40k, then they announced a new system.

I just finished Team Yankee novel, and was in the army 1989-1992, and used to play Twilight 2000. So I thought I'll do team yankee.

Any insights or thoughts?

Team Yankee is a known quantity and will stay stable for a while. Also they're basically 15mm historical miniatures, you'll never lack for a rules set to use them with. Although the same can be said of 40k models.

So, buy TY now, or wait and see for 40K.

I've already got one TY army and I plan to buy one more, the only 40k I want is a small Shadow War squad.

Before jumping into anything, wait to see how the new 40k works out. Then you'll be able to make a more informed decision.

What is the player base in your area like? No point in jumping into any game if the only opponent is "Me, Myself, and I".

Two very good pieces of advice however i'd tend to think that for now, TY has to be a safer bet.

You should try and find out what's played at most in your area. If you really want to get into something quickly then give TY a spin. What's more, GW's always and will probably be always more expensive. This shouldn't deter you from buying if you really wanna get into this but that's sometimes a big argument not to do.

Hope it helps

"The Dakka Dive Bar is the only place you'll hear what's really going on in the underhive. Sure you might not find a good amasec but they grill a mean groxburger. Just watch for ratlings being thrown through windows and you'll be alright." Ciaphas Cain, probably.

See what people are using locally, has to be said a TY force in 15mm isn't that expensive, even a Soviet one, they are also a lot easier to paint decently.

Is the game stable? is any game really stable? TY is "ok", its not amazing but there are other rules out there so your models go further so to speak.

And if BF introduce the 'cards' rubbish from FoW4 there are other games to continue with.

The new 40k sounds interesting, but this is GW it will never be cheap to play properly and unless you like the aesthetic the models get dull to paint very quickly due to the numbers you need.

If I was faced with the choice, from having neither I'd lean towards TY just on financial and storage/transportation grounds but the final choice would be whats played locally more and trying to get a game or two of both and see what yu like.

40k.. has issues with some players GW have never been good at writing robust rules so it seems to attract some players who are not fun to play against, not all by a long shot, its a fun game even when utterly broken if you play against fun people. TY is a bit more robust
