Subject: MegaMetroCity, a beat 'em up boardgame, Kickstarter coming soon
After a long time, we can break the news. Along the current year we want to output this board game through Kickstarter. We consider MegaMetroCity as a “beat´em up” game. Players with a few Characters must fight an entire criminal organization. The basic thing is that the Heroes must move forward on the board fighting while fulfilling the different objectives to overcome every Stage of the game. During these Stages, Heroes can improve their skills and use different weapons and objects to help them get rid of the multiple Thugs. That means, it is a brawler game.
What is it? MegaMetroCity is a board game that represents the spirit of the “beat em up” golden age. And yes, it has miniatures.
Is it a eurogame? No it is not, but you should manage very carefully the amount of beatings you give and receive.
Is it a ameritrash? Yes, it highly is. It is more American than a bald eagle with an M-16.
Is it a wargame? No, it is not; even though nobody would say it because of the number of blows, smacks, bumps and whacks that can be seen in a single round.
It's a boardgame, so the first thing we should see is a large picture of the board(s) and game components.
Got miniatures? Showcase them properly.
n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.
It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

Hi, Otlanth, thank you for your reply.
We will take into account you suggestion. Many components are planed and designed as of now, like the boards:
However, the game is still in a prototype phase while we test the last details of the rules. As such we don't have available many of the final physical components, although we can still get somewhat close to show a complete board:
Despite that, we will be making a lot of updates in the coming months and we hope that we will be able to showcase the game better in the future.
On the other hand, many components are open to feedback from the community and beat 'em up players. Besides the lead pipe that you can see below, what other weapons and upgrades would you like to see in the game?

Let’s talk about the poor health control over the products for sale in MegaMetroCty and their side effects.
Today we are going to talk about HyperCoke, as the unregulated free market has had some unexpected consequences. Scientific studies payed by our competitors say that a glass of HyperCoke contains all the caffeine a person should consume in their entire life. One of the most notorious cases on record was the effect of HyperCoke on unborn children. Lots of them died due to overdose by untested products. Survivors mutated: since the moment of birth they began growing at exponential rates, leading to, not only physical deformities, but mental issues; often ending up as violent sociopaths. The luckiest ones turn into a mountain of muscles like never seen before.
Hypercoke will be one of the products the Heroes will be able to find during the game and will be able to use it to recover health.

We would like to ask you once more for some feedback. Do you think there would be any other foodstuffs that would fit this game? Of the junk food you could consume in classic arcade games, which one is your favourite?

Thank you for the reply, CptJake. We are looking into it, but it's not really a problem, as we can still change it.

Hey, it's not a bad idea. And since we're at it, does someone else have a good idea for names like Dr. Cola or Megasoda? Maybe yours will make it into the final game.

MegaMetroCity players must control at least one Hero. Each Hero has its own attributes which can be upgraded during the game. Hero’s attributes are the following: Movement, Actions, Combat, Life and Special Technique.
Movement, Actions, Combat and Life are quite well described with their own names. The Special Technique is an attribute that gives Heroes the option to perform a particular type of action that only each Hero can perform. Even though they require the expense of life to execute them, they all are devastating.
The illustration made by Randy Vargas corresponds to one of the Heroes that we can control during the game. His name is Jack and he is the oldest of the McClain brothers.

Bloody Chains, or just Bloody, is a gang of punks. They are engaged in the theft and sale of illegal substances. The Crazy Triplets, HyperCoke case survivors, have taken the lead for some time. From then on, the squad started gaining strength and both, band members and their territories, are growing at an alarming rate. They are now renowned for its violence and ambition.
Many of them have fun destroying everything that gets in their way with the huge chains they drag. Many others have gone mad trying to reach their bosses’ stoutness abusing of last generation anabolic steroids day by day. The worst of it all is that the skaters from the Roller Derby League expelled because of unrestrained violence joined their lists.
Its symbol is a fist grabbing a bloody chain.

Your fate in MegaMetroCity is not only decided by your fists and yourself, you also have to count on the dice! http://megametrocity.com/?p=144
MegaMetroCity uses 10-sided dice. One of our purposes is not to use custom dice, that’s why you can use your own 10-sided dice or MegaMetroCity’s ones to play any game that suits you.
These dice are not as known as we wanted, so here’s a little point: on 10-sided dice 0 means 10; so in a roll, the lowest value you can get is 1 and the highest one is 0.
In game you must equal or exceed a predetermined value to succeed. For example, a Hero with a 8+ Fight attribute must obtain a value of 8, 9 or 0 in a roll dice to score a successful hit.

One of the lately famous blunder is the one involving the sneakers known as “Air Jump”. Engineers believed their innovations would shake the world up, but with their engeeniers thought that they were going to start a world-wide revolution with their findings shareholders’ pressure to sell the product ended in disaster.
Air Jumps can make you jump unbelievable lengths. Some sneakers started to explode due to some minor design flaws, leaving a trail of crippled people during the first weeks they went on sale. Those which didn’t explode, created a blast when landing capable of hitting everyone close as if it were a riot grenade. That’s why the company had to withdraw them from shops.
You can still get a pair in the black market.

Our Heroes must face these enemies. In MegaMetroCity these thugs are represented by the different members of Bloody Chains, a punk gang. You can find four basic types of thugs: Punks, Chains, Roller Girls and Hunks. They can attack our Heroes during the “Thugs turn”, and those players who are going to receive such attacks must make the corresponding roll.
They all share a Fight hability, which speeds up the Thugs turn. Therefore you will find a brief description detailing the differences among them.
Punks. The gang`s base members, they appear more often than the rest. Their movement is 2.
Chains. The gang is named after them. They move 1 each turn but their feat of Reach allows them to attack from a distance. As the difficulty of the game increases, does the feat.
Roller Girls. Bloodys count with dangerous speed thanks to these demons on wheels. Their movement is 3.
Hunks. These giant steroid fans have a superior strength. Their movement is 1 but they count on the feat of Defence. Heroes will have a harder time knocking down these guys thanks to this feat. Their resistance increases as the difficulty of the game.
Apart from this, there is a Leader per each type of basic thug, who are tougher, more lethal and, of course, they keep their category’s feats. Everytime a Hero knocks a Leader down, they can draw a card.
Finally, as part of the Thugs we can also find the Final Bosses. But… they deserve their own post.

Faster than bullet and harder than a coffin nail. Today we introduce you to the Roller Girls.
They are made up of all the girls expelled from MegaMetroCity’s Roller Derby League for showing a behavior too aggressive even for them. They are the fastest thug in the game, almot impossible to escape from when they are on the board.

Is it going to have fat dudes too?
lol...
Yeah! It will be very similar to that kind of brawler games: Streets of Rage, Captain Commando, Double Dragon... And, it is very likely that some fat dudes will show up, stay tuned to find out.

If beat 'em ups have taught us anything, bald fat dudes are tougher and stronger than most thugs, so you definitely want some in your gang. Just make sure they all wear the same clothing.

First thing you should see is a spread of the game components and board, even if Work In Progress copies.
An example:
When Folklore the Afflication was crowdfunded the first thing you see, after the video is the spread. The spread was set up even though he box wasn't done neither was the card art, both have changed since what they pasted together fr the initial spread. But the designers knew from the outset that if you make a boardgame you show a contents spread first thing even if components showcased are not final.
You need the contents spread, its an old truth of boardgames marketing that goes as far back as Monopoly and likely beyond.
Do a search on 'boadgame' as a categoy in Kickstarter and most games being funded us a contents spread as their thumbnail, or the box lid , and those that do not normally start off with a spread image and boxlid in their pledge info.

Thank you for your feedback, it is always welcome and it will help us improve. You're right: one of the first things you want to see about a board game is a spread of its components. We're still working on it, however, there are still many months ahead of us and there are still some components that need to be finished.
As it is our first project, we wanted to show some bits of it as we get ready to launch the Crowdfunding (and also take the chance yo show some of the setting).
We intend to show the full spread of the game ASAP as well as giving early access to the Kickstarter some weeks before launching it, so we can get more of your feedback. By the way, it will be around the last months of this year.

Your sales pitch has already begun as it is here and whatever site you are posting on, including social media. You can have a WIP boxlid too, one of your existing images. Photoshop that onto a boxlid, add isometrics of gameboards in a spread or fan, add stacks of generic cards if any, add dice add some minis, again low resolution WIP. is good enough for now and base all this on what you want to include in the retail copy, so no stretchgoals. Give us potential customers an idea of what we will be getting, or you will lose our interest.
I cant stress ths enough, you need to really showcase your project and show cool stuff, and that starts with getting us excited over your boardgame. Work out the details later.
Something else. Your game does look like it might be interesting, but it appears small in scale and scope, and I see more.
Many crowdfund boardgames expand on the fly, though you need 3d sculpts to get the imagination. Check out Lords of Hellas.
Cyber-ancient Greece. Fairly original. The rules are reckoned to be good which is a start, but dont kid yourself people didnt really drop a million on this because of the rules, though that helped, they came for the shinies.
Spoiler:
I really suggest you take a long look at the pledge info: 12,439 backers pledged £1,717,792 to help bring this project to life.
There is no real reason you can match that. You might get twenty thousand Euro, you could get a million, and the pizazz of our protect will make the difference.
Mohican punks, not-Street Fight characters are rollerblade punks are cool, but you need more much more. Add large miniatures as they get attention this to you will mean vehicles unless you intend to include fantasy elements. Lords of Hellas made its pledge money by having large plastic models to place on the tabletop.
Another miniature boardgame to look at is Deep Madness
Another big erner on kickstarter: 9,566 backers pledged $1,438,293 to help bring this project to life.
Here we ave another mythos horror game with a twist, the underwater setting.
Spoiler:
Check out what this one offered. Many not-Cthulhu monsters, some original some less so, However focus here on the heroes.
We see in this project thinly disguised versions both by models and names of Loveraft character and to Bladerunner plus, Gordon Freeman from half life, Amanda Ripley from the Alien franchise, someone reminiscent of the Master Chief and generic fantasy tropes like the Russian secret agent in the catsuit.
It's cheesy, it's awesome and it's fun; but it's all business. Nostalgia sells and is a feel good sale..
Punk gang street battles has definitely got room to grab he imagination the same way. Yes more roller girls, preferably multiple sculpts, but you also need to get the nostalgia money. Do some more revision, Street Fighter character echoes is a good start, but go back and watch and rewatch if needs be The Warriors, Escape from New York and Mad Max 2 Road Warrior (because you need vehicles to make the big models and get the wallets to open properly. Meanwhile to make sure we are on the same page Baseball Furies: must have, not-Snake Plissken: don't even think about don't sculpting one. And yes you need a fat bald guy fighter trope, but you also need a thinly disguised Sho Nuff.
This will take your project to the next level. However to really get the money in you need to think even bigger, literally. More board size, street intersections not a boring rectangle (unless you want to do a street blood bowl as a bonus game) and larger maps. Sadly due to the milieu you cant add awesome monsters or mecha, but you can do street furniture and you can punk up vehicles. Bikes, yes, mod them, get the tropes in: high riders, muttonchops, german helmets, bike chains and molotovs split between the models. School buses are in, cars are in, corregated iron plating is mandatory for both. Pickups and flatbeds can carry gangers around the map.
Even if your game doesnt support vehicles larger than bikes you can still make the game awesome with street terrain. Oil drums and tyre walls come to mind.
consider making it 3d with cardstock wall sections cut to length of each board section, add plastic components to stick onto the cardstock to bring da streets to life.
As you are as you said, in ealy stages you could consider for yourselves whether you can make components to match the boardgames showcased here. frankly your project looks small, small gangs on straight streets, but you have the artistic chops and the 3d sculpts look great, and your genre is expandable into making something bigger and with far more draw.
Handled well with tight rules variety and impressive toys for the tabletop there is no reason why your game cant go all the way and get a million, or it could be a modest footnote in miniatures bordgaming.

Though it might not seem like it, he is just three years older than Jack. He always was the biggest kid around. His physical appearance always brought him troubles with older people around the hood. Esto le hizo curtirse en decenas de peleas callejeras. He is a good person, nice and he doesn’t like taking advantage of people, but don’t you dare to piss him off… His not afraid of anything and just a few could confront him in a fight. Besides his size, he is tough: being around thirteen years old someone broke a bat in his head and undaunted he headed the face of the fool who dared.
Despite being older than Jack, their friendship grew during their adolescence. They attended the same high school for two years, where they were the some of the few students not looking for troubles but also not running away from them. Both guaranteed peace between school gangs during this period. Axel did not finish school: he took the leadership of the Afro Kings and dedicated all his time to it.
Five years ago, Julius, his father had a heart attack. Medical expenses almost ruined his family, so he took over the family business: the mechanics workshop his grandfather founded. Julius needs lifelong medication and paying for the surgeries, but he cannot make the efforts associated with this kind of job. He can still be seeing trying to get the business going but not helping much. The workshop is currently the most famous in the South of the city. They are very good at setting up all kind of engines and although it does not please our Hero, many thugs come to him to try to have the most powerful motorcycle in the city.
Thank you very much!

Hey! Today we pesent a new MegaMetroCity enemy: the Chains!
The craziest of them all, the thugs that keep alive the name and history of the Bloody. If an establishment burns down with the owners inside, or a simple warning turns into a brutal beating, or any other situation goes out of hand it’s probably the Chains’ doing.
Hey guys, we hope you are having a great 2018. MegaMetroCity's kickstarter campaign is getting closer and we keep introducing you to our characters. This time, it's Travis, the youngest McClain brother.
He is a heart-throb, funny and cocky. Unlike his brother, Travis knows everbody in the city, and everybody knows him back; but if he has Friends it is actually because of Jack. He’s always been a thrill seeker and hanging out with the wrong people in the neighbourhood, this was an easy business.
