Hi all!

First of all: This is not a "Should female custodes exist" or all of that.

My question is straitforward. Exist in the lore some mention of a Female Custodes? If the answer is no. Exist some mention of Custodes only being male?
I assume that the posibility is here, because if I'm not wrong, Custodes are the personal friends of the Emperor that throug millenia he had make them inmortal supersoldiers, and they have no geneseed, etc...
I'm asking this because I want to make a small force of Sisters of Battle with Saint Celestine, and I'm thinking of giving them a Custodes squad leaded by Jeanne D'arc (The Historical one).
If the possibility of female custodes exist, I want to write her a backstory to explain how he meet the emperor, what he has done all those years, etc, etc... if there is none, I'll restrain from writing her backstory and I'll just do her as a cool modelling proyect of myself. When I write background I like to write it in a open possibility by the authors, not contradicting former official lore.

Thanks for the answers! And please, restrain from bringing here politics, etc, this is a simple lore question!

Why not? The Custodes process is different than SPAZZ MArienez so do what you want.

Sounds like your SOBs are already lead by Joan.

Custodes are the sons of those the Emp deemed traitors to the human race. They got their position as a form of repentance for their families sins.

But if thats what you want to do, knock yourself out. Its your story and your game.

The Adeptus Custodes (as they were known after the Heresy), from what I know of the lore, has always been exclusively male. The Silent Sisterhood serves as the female contribution to the Emperor's hyper-elites.

But it's your army and your d00dz. If you want to do it, I say go for it.

Can you give me a source for this please? Lexicanum has no information about that.
Lexicanum wrote:The original recruits of the Custodes were from the offspring of Terran nobility

It doesn't say anything more about traitors. Not say in there that they were only male.

And I know that is my army, I'm gonna do the model proyect one way or the other, but if a lore posibility for her existance exist, I'll like to write her some background. If not, I'm not gonna bother with that.

I know, from a out-of-universe point of view is obvius that they are equivalents, but I want to know if its specified that they can only be male, like Space Marines, if no example of female custodes exist.

Dude who cares for fluff stuff, this is way too cool to not do what your heart tells you to. A female SoB custodian squad would be so wicked.

The galaxy is a big place, maybe those religious nuts decided to give a bunch of sisters some really cool stuff they found at a dig site and didn't tell the gear heads about.

In my opinion fluff is like condiments. If you want to base your meals around them, you're free to do so. But they should serve what you want. At the end of the day, this hobby is about having a good time.

I'm gonna do a female custodes leading a custodes squad, thats a sure. The point is, I want , if it is posible, to make the leader be the Historical Jeanne D'arc, you know, the French original one... but in golden armour and with like 2 meters more of height! And write her some background. But if is not possible to have her as a Custodes, I'll just do the model, not the background.

No, there exists no mention of female Custodes and they appear to be male only. The Custodes Codex mentions that Sons were given to the Emperor for him to create Custodes, and they are referred to as a Brotherhood.

Custodes were not his friends from millennia past. They are a creation of the unification war. I wouldn't say they have no gene-seed either.

Not very workable. In addition to everything previously mentioned Custodes have to be taken very young. So even if females could become Custodes and the Emperor had been creating them for tens of thousands of years she would simply be too old.

There is no mention of the Custodes being an all male institution. The only thing we know is that Custodes were enhanced to be Superior to humans and are even Superior to Space Marines. They are completly loyal and apparently, much like the Grey Knights, none of them would have turned to Chaos. There 10 000 of them, but only 300, the Companions, are protecting the Golden Throne. All Custodes presented to us so far both in artwork, models and books have all been men, but that doesn't mean there can't be any women. The fact that all information on them in lexicanum is gender inclusive seems to demonstrate that, while probably rare for some reason, there could be Custodes women. As for one of them being an actual historical character, I would refrein from such a thing. Especially a late medieval character. For all we know, the Emperor wasn't much more tech savy in the past than the rest of humanity. The big difference is that he knows and remember all that was developped during the Dark Age of Technology while amost everybody forgot during the Age of Strife.

Where ever the Emperor needs his eyes

As has been said theres nothing that (I know of) that says Custodes must be men, how ever (again as has been said) Jeanne D'arc couldnt be one, The Emperor didnt have the means to create the Custodes at the time she would have been alive. Also you're wrong about them having been his friends from the past, they are a creation from much much later on in the history of Warhammer.

Ok, thanks for the insight! So no Jeanne D'arc custodes version. A shame
And yes, probably I have mixed the fact that Custodes are probably the only thing that the Emperor considers friends to them being friends of the past.

While their isn't any specific mention for or against, indications are that they are all male.

From a decree made by the Emperor during the Old Night:

"These men are my bodyguards, their lives forfeit to the guarantee of my physical safety. Of their loyalty to me there shall be no question nor doubt. I, and I alone, shall have the authority to stand in judgement over them. No other commander shall they have in battle nor in service. None shall bar them from me and none shall hamper or stall their mission. So it is decreed!" (emphasis mine).

They are genetically engineered from scratch, from the Emperor's own DNA (much like the Primarchs), predating even the Genos Regiments and Thunder Warriors that unified Terra during the Age of Strife. Their armor fits the basic template of male-specific powered armor, the basic design being similar to those of the now-extinct Thunder Warriors and later Astartes. And all of the named Custodes have been male characters.

And there is the fact that, aside from the matriarchal command structure of the Genos Regiments and Sisters of Silence, the Emperor had a strong male bias in his elite, top-tier fighting forces.

But in my view, canonical indications aside, there is some wiggle room for a fan to create an exception to the general rule. Like I said before, it's about "Your d00dz". There is no reason why somebody couldn't discard (or tweak) canonical information for their own homebrew armies and fluff. As long as said fan/player is enjoying themselves, that's all that counts.

as for the bit about children of traitors, not sure if the codex spells it out, but it does fit with master of mankind which shows us the background of one custodes in partiuclar. it actually makes sense. friendships can break. if I was going to make custom genecrafted bodyguards for myself I'd wanna take children and indoctrinate them from the start. I'd not recruit my friends and buddies.

Honestly, the emperor referring to them as 'men' means very little to me. Even something as simple as driving where I can't see the other person leads me to default to male pronouns half the time.

Altough sadly yes, it appears that the original D'Arce is off the table. Given that she was almost certainly a pacifist, I'm not sure why the emperor would want her as a bodyguard anyway By all means, go for it, I'd like to see the conversion when its finished.

As the marines, if you want to fit the original lore, it makes no sense to have women, when you can have men. They're better in terms of strength and resistance and I've never heard, in the official books/miniatures about female warriors.

It sounds misogynistic, but 40k prioritizes the "useful" sex for battle and, lets be realistic, in terms of physical power, men are better, because its body is genetically made for physical efforts. There are woman in important charges though, as Titan princeps, captains of spaceships (the captain of the main ship of the world eaters is a woman, so imagine XD)

Now, in terms of fanfictions: Imho, write about whatever you want. You can always substitute their inferior physic with stronger psychic powers, for example. There's always an option, as long as you feel it ok for you.

Depends on whether the process increases strength by 20 points, 20% or just raises it to 40. We don't know how exactly it increases strength only that it does. If stronger applicants become stronger Space Marines then it's relevant.

The more important question isn't about their body strength, it's about the strength of their armor. Servo-muscle have a fixed strength output and it doesn't change depending on the natural aptitudes of the bearer. If I can lift 150 lb and you can lift 120 lb I am stronger than you are. If we are both wearing a power armor that can lift for 300 lb of extra weight, two things happen. If I can lift the armor, I might be able to add my strength to it making me able to lift 450 lb and you 425 lb. In that situation, I am still stronger than you, but difference passes, from significant, but not so bad to insignificant. If we are weaker than the armor, we are both stuck at 300 lb since we can't help it produce more strength. The first option seems to be GW style. Coincidently, my estimate of your stength vs my stength is the same than that between an well trained men, vs a well trained women in terms of proportion (about 20-25 upper body stength%). The power armor is thus a very important variable in this equation.

You missed the part where these are 7-8 foot tall genetic creations that could be scientifically classed as the same species as ours. When a magical wizard makes Uruk Hai to protect himself from Space Elves, arguments that its males only do not apply.

Also correct. Its about the armor, not the person.

I wouldn't write out the possibility with that quote. Although it is a modern thing for it to refer to members male gender, man/men can be used gender neutrally (like 'guys'). Indeed the roots of the word are gender neutral.

It's worth noting thay because all the actual blueprints tobmake a human are in the x chromasome, and the Y chromasome has little on except being a male and hair in your ears if you want to genetically alter/augment a human doing it based on mucking about with the Y chromasome is the easy way to do it.

Custodes and Space Marines don't get their strength or speed from their armor, at least not fully. Their augmentations boost their abilities significantly and allow their unarmored punches to buckle APC/IFV armor or break apart power armor. Likewise their method of creation is not uniform, and in results in fluctuations of height and other attributes such as strength. Thus if you put a woman through the same process (and likely getting a statistically higher failure rate as a young recruit, which is bad when you're dealing with ridiculously valuable and precious genetic material) and she manages to survive... you're going to get a subject likely weaker than the average male specimens. And meanwhile the universe is host to quadrillions of humans, and thus quadrillions of men, of which you will never run out of. So there's also no need for "more recruits" because you're already at the peak population.

Well, regardless of whether Custodes can be female or not, Jeanne d'Arc died in 1431, which is roughly about 29000 years before the Adeptus Custodes were founded. That might be a slight fluff impediment...
Apart from that, I don't think it is ever explicitly mentioned that all Custodes are male, alltough this is of course heavily implied (every single Custodes we have ever seen is male, just like every single of the Emperor's other, related genetic projects such as the Thunder Warriors, Primarchs and Astartes.)

Does sound like its going to be a cool miniature though. Please share some pictures when you are finished!

In this particular case why would you want to have her as a Custodes when the fluff and stats of a Living Saint fit the background better - use the stats for Saint C and all is cool. Then her entire story is fine - she believed in Him, was burnt and has arisen again to serve Him.

re Custodes in general - I don't think that (unlike the marines) it is ever stated they must be male. If you want some female ones thats fine

I AM A MARINE PLAYER

"Unimaginably ancient xenos artefact somewhere on the planet, hive fleet poised above our heads, hidden 'stealer broods making an early start....and now a bloody Chaos cult crawling out of the woodwork just in case we were bored. Welcome to my world, Ciaphas."
Inquisitor Amberley Vail, Ordo Xenos

"I will admit that some Primachs like Russ or Horus could have a chance against an unarmed 12 year old novice but, a full Battle Sister??!! One to one? In close combat? Perhaps three Primarchs fighting together... but just one Primarch?" da001

I'm starting to think the reason that everyone in 40k is male is because everyone took a good look at Blanche's artwork for the SoB and said "Please don't do that again"

H.B.M.C.- The end hath come! From now on armies will only consist of Astorath, Land Speeder Storms and Soul Grinders!
War Kitten- Vanden, you just taunted the Dank Lord Ezra. Prepare for seven years of fighting reality...
koooaei- Emperor: I envy your nipplehorns. <Magnus goes red. Permanently>
Neronoxx- If our Dreadnought doesn't have sick scuplted abs, we riot.
Frazzled- I don't generally call anyone by a term other than "sir" "maam" "youn g lady" "young man" or " HEY bag!"
Ruin- It's official, we've ran out of things to talk about on Dakka. Close the site. We're done.
mrhappyface- "They're more what you'd call guidlines than actual rules" - Captain Roboute Barbosa
Steve steveson- To be clear, I'd sell you all out for a bottle of scotch and a mid priced hooker.

Thread winner right there.

-"Wait a minute.....who is that Frazz is talking to in the gallery? Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG

The OP could go down the Perpetual route with her with the backstory.

And if the OP wanted her to stand out, he/she could use the Infinity mini and do a bit of conversion.

IIRC, custodes were individually made rather than mass produced, right?

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.
