Hey Bro 'Stan,
-This may well turn into a hell of a post so make yourself a beverage and prepare to learn stuff...
-First up, you're dealing with 40k at 750pts, which is pretty much rock paper scissors. no army is ever going to be truly TAC; so honestly if you're looking to wreck face often the answer is to spam something points efficient and scary. however if you're going to try and play a thematic lil non-formation army, then I have the following advice:
1) lets get a cheap HQ. you've got 750pts here dude, we can't afford a beatstick like Calgar, and lord knows there's nothing more saddening than a half assed beatstick. look into a librarian, or Chaplain. preferably the chaplain as you have no units really worth buffing with psychic abilities and the invuln save will protect you from an easy slay the warlord scoring.
2) while I could type a small dissertation on the importance of formations to keep in line with the 40k power creep in 7th, lets face it, with 8th on the doorstep there's very little point. as such I'll spare you the lecture on transport spam etc. or abuse of chapter tactics to create unkillable bike stars.
-For now, I would recommend a single, and then double purchase to really make the army kick ass. get you some drop pods.
after the first purchase use it as a delivery system for that dreadnought. after the second pod look at the skyhammer formation. you have a load of heavy weapons marines, and plenty of spare bodies to forge your dev squad into 2. you already have the 2 jump assault squads. just pinning and relentless on these marine groups will make them more efficient, and the assault squads having a delivery will bolster their effectiveness and stop them being a target practice for the tau you're facing. while generally I shy from Grav, if you're sick of losing, pick up our newer toys, because; damn.
if you don't want to spend a load on 2 pods though (honestly a great investment though) -consider using the battle demi-company. this will unlock the doctrines, which if you're playing ultramarines you can now use twice, severely helping your odds to hit when using anything within the battle company...
DM me for a more direct restructuring?
