So, while I know I'm two years late and also probably cliche by now, I want to make a Mad Max: Fury Road themed Ork Army out of all GW models and Plasticard (or something similar). So, I bought the "Ork Trukk Boyz" box yesterday as it seemed a great place to start. The Trukk doesn't need a lot of modification to look like something used in Fury Road. That said, I now have 11 Boyz that I need to set up. So, for all your Ork players out there, what's the best way to set up a group of Ork Boyz?

Thanks in advance!

Probably don't do what I did. I magnetized all 100 of my boyz so I could do slugga/choppa or shoota.

It took forever and it mostly burnt me out on painting them (at least for now).

At the end of the day slugga/choppa is dependable since Orks like to get in and have a brawl.

I'd wait for 8th edition, any answer you get now is gonna be irrelevant in 2 weeks

With the edition change coming in a few weeks who knows. That said, even in 7th were orks were not the strongest army, point for point the Boy remained one of the more efficient infantry units in the game. I doubt that will change.

Wise words. If you want to know how best to field them, you should wait for 8e.
However if you're going for trukk boy, I'd go for choppa boys. Cheap, light, and dead killy in melee.

Also the ork trukk does look like something out of Fury Road when vanilla. If you're going to make like 10 of them, maybe do a conversion job. But seeing how you already a bunch of plasticard, go nuts now man. Also, LEARN HOW TO RIVET !!! Makes it look real orky.

your mind

Boys plus nob with powerclaw is pretty standard.
That said I have no power claws... Or maybe one I think.
My advice is build em as you see them in your mind.

Choppa and Slugga is always the cheapest option in terms of points, and given the changes we've seen recently to assault and pistols, Shootas are no longer auto-take for Boyz.

I tend to do a 50 50 mix of shootaz and Sluggaz in trukks. This edition has kinda been forgiving with my Ork since snapfiring (from crew in penned transports) doesn't really matter much, but aside from a few rare fulfilling Dakka moments, the Slugga boyz usually have a higher damage output, if barely.

I've run my lists w/o boyz or with just one squad in 7-th. Seems to be the most effective way. 8-th looks promissing for regular boyz.

My favorite thing about Fury Road was its realistic depiction of Ork culture. Spot-on in most regards, except for that whole silly breeder thing. Everyone knows that Orks come from spores!

Here's the thing about Orks: while you only see a Trukk and a small mob of Boyz now, what us experienced Ork players see is the makings of a huge WAAAGH!

So, they are just the first of your first boyz, not your last, and you can't really go too far wrong building them with either option.

- Slugga & Choppas are great in melee, and the new Vehicle rules make it seem like they may even be a bit more survivable riding in Trukks than before, helping them get into melee / onto an objective / etc.

- Shoota boyz have traditionally also been quite good, in fact nearly as good as Slugga boyz in melee, and of course the shootiness never hurts (though I find they're more effective in larger mobs of ~20-30 boyz - once you take a few casualties, the firepower output of a small mob of Shoota boyz combined with inaccurate Ork shooting makes them rather meh).

So... I recommend you either take the cautious route, suggested above, and wait a few weeks till you have the new rules in hand, or you go the Orky route, and just build them however you like, on the knowledge that they can form the nucleus of future mobs, and that you'll inevitably have some slugga & choppa boyz, and some shoota boyz, but almost certainly A LOT more boyz overall, so it's not a big deal either way.

My two teef!

Wait and see for fear of being wrong type arguements aside;
-Not once this edition have I paid to upgrade to Shootas and felt more powerful
-New Edition adds cover to armor saves, shooting expected to be harder
-Orkz are expected to have a BS of 5+
-Orkz have a melee statline and melee is Orky
-Melee is having mostly sweet things added to it in 8th

Take Choppa/Slugga and stop thinking about shooting with Ork Boyz. Shooting is for our Toyz

I am the kinda ork that takes his own washing machine apart, puts new bearings in it, then puts it back together, and it still works.

I found that Trukk Mobz are better off with Sluggas, and hunting in pairs, while Shootas are best reserved for 20-strong Mobz in Battlewagons.

I agree with most posters recommendation to wait because the new edition will be out in about 1 month.

If your really interested in starting Orks...RIGHT NOW. Here's my advice.

Orks have always been a hoard army since I started playing in 3rd edition. Today, after going through five editions, I still have a core back bone to my army, Boyz. Your going to have a lot of boyz, they're basic ork trooper. Concerning their weapons, Ive always run a 4:1 ratio of close combat (slugga choppa) to ranged (shooas).

Since we don't know specifics about how many specialists weapons can go in a unit, or even squad size, I'd just do a bunch of core boyz with that 4:1 ratio. Orks are better at CC, and it looks like 8th is swinging back towards CC armies so your safe making a lot of orks with slugga and choppa. You'll still need some shootas, in certain situations they work better (even considering BS 2).

I wouldn't work on any specialized troops or Nobz even, We don't know enough yet. And save some orks to do specialized weapons at least 1 per 10 boyz.

Agree on the solid advice: You are gonna get more so assemble the boyz as you see cool. However hold onto the special weapons ork, either assemble him as rokkit dude (hits on 5+, S8, AP-2, D d3 or d6) or hold onto the bits. The nob gets the powerklaw.

The trukk can make use of the upgrades! So either make it spectacular, or assemble the equipment later.

With love from Denmark

I kept all the rokkit guys and eventually build seven of them at the same time, which gave me a cheeky wee Tankbusta squad. So there's that.

Build them as either Shootas or Sluggas, doesn't really matter for the first buy since you will probably want some of each anyway. In Trukks I like Sluggas as I build my Shootas in groups of 20+, Boss Nob with a Pole and Power Claw, and no Special weapon (as mentioned save up your Rokkits or run Big Shootas with your other Shootas). I model my Trukks with a Rokkit too as they lack in the STR shooting department, but I wouldn't expect much out of it.

I would take slugga/choppa boyz at first. You will most definitely be getting more boyz but get the most of the charge for now. 8th edition is looking promising but we shall see
