Is Kantor Blue as the base color for Ultramarines a common thing? In videos I typically see people use Macragge Blue for the base color, but when I did it, the model didn't really look Ultramarine-ish to me. The Macragge Blue was a darker blue that could arguably be called a bluish purple. But, when I painted a model with Kantor Blue, it looked much more like the the traditional colors you see on Ultramarines.

It might also depend on which technique you're going to use if you want to build up the paint scheme - a darker blue works if you're highlighting the scheme Up to a final lighter colour, while a Lighter blue works if you're going to use shades instead.

Ultramarines have changed blues and other colours a bunch of times over the entirety of 40k. It really seems to just depend on what the painter likes as they seem to be really any sort of blue at times now.

Paint what works for you. I’ve seen Ultras in everything from baby blue to almost black. I aim for more of a deep sapphire myself.

But we all march for Macragge. Courage and Honour!

Ultramarine is actually a colour, which is violet-ish blue, but the Ultras you see on the box covers never look that way. I think the violet tinge to them is badass. That or a darker blue.

Ultramarine, Royal or even Prussian blue are good choices IMO - they're darker, richer blues that contrast nicely with a lot of the accent colours on Ultramarines.
