A few years back myself and some friends all discussed how we all went through the same process to get to where we were gaming .

We'd all picked it up in our early teenage (or just before years) either GW or historical (very dependent on a family member gaming that later one)

All ditched it in later teenage/early 20's when alcohol and other more sociable activities etc came to the fore.

All picked it up again a bit before mid 20's as we started having jobs and disposable incomes

And now hitting early 30's we're all either dropping game time for paint time, or swapping to faster card games as other responsibilities take over.

This resonate with many people?

Nah. I didn't start gaming until I was 20 (college) and I never stopped.

Close.

I didn't start until I was 19, though (no childhood warbarbies for me - unless you count SW action figure pew-pew games).
Started with WW2 but moved to "moderns" (1987) for a bit before discovering RT40k a few months after it came out.

But the mid-20s alcohol/girls/clubbing/etc did see a downturn in gaming just a tad (with 3 nights a week going out to clubs) - coincided with 2nd ed 40k (1995-7).

Settled back down to more gaming when I turned 30 and it's been that way for the last 2 decades.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

Mine is actually REALLLY close.

My dad used to game a lot when he was in his 20's and as such had a large collection of 40k, fantasy, epic, and necromunda figs. he also used to co-own a game store where I would hang out when I was younger, so i was always around it. built and painted a few minis with friends when I was young but never played.

When I was 22 my little cousin asked me about it and I gave him the rundown. He picked up DE and I grabbed necrons (to add to an existing box set I got when I was 12) Haven't looked back since. LOVE the game and I still enjoy women and bars. Sadly though my cousin quit shortly there-after due to DE being awful in 5th ed (and the next subsequent 2 editions... heres hoping for 8th) and due to the fact that building/painting took up so much time.

I couldn't see myself moving to card games as they just dont have the same visual aesthetic or get me nearly as engrossed. Also we have a pretty healthy gaming group full of friends and of course my dad picked it back up when he saw the interest.

I've been playing since the late 80s. This is the cycle as I have seen it:

Start out really competitive. Usually 20s.

Get married. Sell all wargaming as the guy and his wife become one entity. They have kids.

Early mid 30s they return much less competitive. Time is more scarce so they only get to play once in a great while.

The type of game is never consistent. Some still play big games of warhammer. Some will prefer smaller games or card games that are fast.

No one in my family gamed at all. I started at 10 and have been going for 30+ years. There have been the odd year here and there where very little happened, but that comes with life and all it brings.

Cheers,

Among my group, it seems like it goes:

start gaming in Primary school or early Secondary (10 - 12). Keep it up until late teens when University, beer and women lure you away (partially or entirely). In mid - late 20s finally start amassing those collections of miniatures and games that you wanted but couldn't afford as a 14 year old. Cut back somewhat if kids arrive (but mostly cut back on gaming, as opposed to buying ).

Probably work

I started playing D&D in college and haven't stopped, so I've been gaming in some form or another pretty much continuously. I was always interested in Warhammer, but didn't start that until I had a big boy job. I kind of started tuning out around the end of 6th edition, but 7th was what made me quit.

Based upon what I've been reading about 8th though, I'm ready to be back.

Picked up my first Guardsmen as a sophomore in high school and never looked back. My gaming actually increased when my friends and I were settling down and having kids, as game night became our one time when we could really socialize. We've done conventions and tournaments together and are planning a big trip to either Adepticon or Gen Con next year.

The one cycle I have noticed is a lot of people start with GW games and then grow their hobby beyond that in terms of different scales and various rule sets.

Not me.

I started 40K right before I turned 30, but I never really got into the gaming side of it, just the painting. Then I picked up X-Wing and played up until last year all the while playing tons of board games with my X-Wing group. Now a buddy and I are into the GF9 Tanks game and maybe looking at getting into FoW. Though board games are still pretty much the go-to with my group of friends.

Started in my early teens.

Didn't drop it in my late teens for 'more socially acceptable pastimes.' (Nice euphemism for getting drunk, by the by. My brain is strange enough on it's own, thank you, I don't need to chemically alter it to have fun.) It certainly didn't interfere with my love life, I was dating gamer girls before most of the world knew there WERE gamer girls.

And not having dropped it there was no need to pick it back up again.

In short, I'm a gamer. That's a big part of who I am. I'm not, and never have been, ashamed of it. And if anyone has a problem with it we can take it up in the other major hobby I learned to enjoy after would-be bullies introduced me to it in my early teens - melee combat....

I started gaming and modelling with AD&D when I was nine or ten. A friend introduced me to WHFB v2 in high school, then we all got into 40K soon after. I played various games for years, but my gaming time has slowed to a trickle now that I'm a father. I'm still paining and modelling, though, and I hope to keep my son interested enough to so as to start the next generation of gamer.

Now showing more Samurai Marines, Bad Squiddo Amazons, and an Oldhammer Chaos Thug!

I got into 40k with 2nd edition (I was around 10). I played and painted through some of 3rd edition, then didn't touch it again until briefly during 5th edition. I'm kind of the opposite of some people in the thread; now that my responsibilities at work are giving me less time to take weekend trips and the like, I've taken it back up as my hobby.

Got into RPGs in like 7th grade. This lead ot finding a copy of Rogue Trader which led us to 2nd ed 40k. Played from about age 9 to mid 20's fairly consistently (I never went back to RPGs after I found table top wargames). Expanded mightily from about 19 on where I played everything from Vor to 40k to Chronopia to Crucible and SST.

Stopped all together for about 7-8 years and picked up 40k again in my early 30's. Now though it's mostly just reading, modeling and painting. Been an age since I got an actual game in. Lately I've actually been contemplating picking up RPGs again too.

Edit: I just googled ablutions and apparently it does not including dropping a duece. I should have looked it up early sorry for any confusion. - Baldsmug

Psiensis on the "good old days":
"Kids these days...
... I invented the 6th Ed meta back in 3rd ed.
Wait, what were we talking about again? Did I ever tell you about the time I gave you five bees for a quarter? That's what you'd say in those days, "give me five bees for a quarter", is what you'd say in those days. And you'd go down to the D&D shop, with an onion in your belt, 'cause that was the style of the time. So there I was in the D&D shop..."

Very similar to my experience.
However, I'm actually playing minis games more in my 30's than ever before, but that comes out to about once every-other-week and I'm definitely playing lighter games with fewer rules and generally (though not always) fewere minaitures.

Didn't take much of a break, but ancients opponents did become scarce where I was.
I have found that I grow more and more fond of smaller (i.e. skirmish) games and/or light and simple rules as I get older though
