The Mid-Western Front

Anyone play Wings of Glory WWII? I was thinking about buying into it as the setting interests me more than WWI... how does it play? Especially compared to X-Wing, as I play that.

It's pretty similar to X-Wing (X-Wing was derived from it, FFG held the production rights to WoG for a short time). You can play the game from a cold start in about 30 minutes, and if you've played X-Wing you can pick up play in about 5-10 minutes.

Main differences are that you are using cards instead of dials and templates to perform your move, you're planning a move ahead (executing current move and planning next turn's move) and combat is via a card deck (or chits, if you get the older version) - no dice to roll. And there's no "blocking" - two planes can overlap each other due to movement.

There's also optional rules for altitude in WoG, and none of the airplanes have points - you sort of have to learn to "feel" how good planes are against each other.

Finally, while you can have aces for the various planes, there's not the sort of "game-within-the-game" for upgrades and customizations.

Wings of War (as it was then) WW2 was the first of these style of games I got into. The different card decks do a good job of differentiating between fast and slow, agile and lumbering planes (and in the WW1 games, those planes with rotary engines that can turn faster in one direction than the other).

I've noticed more Immelmann turns in our games than is perhaps historically accurate, but other than that it's a fun game.

There are a few scnearios in the core rules (at least, there were in Wings of War; I assume they're in Wings of Glory too) that are worth trying out. The game also allows for things like bombing missions (and photoreconnaissance too, I think) and ground-based anti-aircraft fire.

It also works really well as a group game - take as many players as you can, give 'em all a fighter each and have at it.
