I've never gonn into the fluff off 40k, I do own the first paperback ed of Lotr, was wondering what is the start of 40k , where does it start, what book, what order? Any book collection? Or collectors? Please inform

I doubt there is any novel that goes all the way back.

Best to look up a wiki timeline and read through the history.

The earliest book in the timeline would probably be The First Heretic, as it covers the events that turned the Word Bearers to Chaos, which then lead to the events of the the Heresy, including Horus Rising and the subsequent False Gods, Galaxy in Flames, Flight of the Eisenstein and Fulgrim novels. I think the rest of the HH series, apart from Book 14 The First Heretic, is set some point after the Dropsite Massecre.

Inquisitor (1990) is the oldest novel I can think of, if that's what you mean.
