This came up today. At my local GW I was told that all woods are Sylvaneth wyldwoods because there aren't any stats for normal woods and the wildwood uses that model. So if you're rolling random terrain and put down a citadel wood this is the same as putting down a wildwood. Basically they gave generic woods a fancy name.

However I went down to a new game store and they disputed this and seemed taken aback that I thought this. They seemed to think that a wood is just a generic terrain piece and the Sylvaneth do not gain any benefit from them as only real wyldwoods. This is a huge distinction because a lot of the armies abilities depend on them being near wyldwoods and not just "generic citadel woods".

One other thing he said was that "nobody would ever place them if that was the case". Which was odd because both Players place terrain.

Woods are only Wild Woods if the players agree/announce they are. Otherwise they are simply a piece of terrain. Where I play the store has some Citadel Woods but the only players can use Wild Woods if they bring them.

So if I have a Sylvaneth unit that has a buff related to them being in woodland they do not gain that benefit if they are just in a citadel wood? That seems very against the spirit of the rules. It means I can have units in identical pieces of terrain not gain the benefits in both cases. To me, the Sylvaneth abilities are just intended to work with woodland and they just gave the citadel wood a faction specific name to reflect this.

Plenty of boards have the Khorne fortress on but people don't pay points for that. But I don't think anyone could reasonably argue it's just a terrain piece.

Personally I don't like having to buy, paint and transport that much terrain. The woods are bulky. They take up too much space. Iam not sitting right next to my gaming store. They also make it really difficult to play the game as you are always moving stuff out of the way. Plus when I brought my own wood one time it got stolen by the people who owned that stores terrain. So I am very against the idea of being forced to spend extortionate money and put up with all the problems when there's a ton of citadel woods that the club owns.

Wildwoods don't cost anything for a pure Sylvaneth army, but yes the rules specifically state that your wyldwoods are what you place down at the start of the game. You get the 1-3 platforms of woods and any additional that you summon on to the field during the course of the game.

A Wyldwood is still a piece of terrain, so there is nothing stopping you from placing one during the set up of the game just like you would a Nominus Occulum or Ophidian Archway.. You just have to declare that it's a Wyldwood and it gets those rules instead of rolling for random terrain feature.
