Hi folks. I've been following Aos for a whole now and I really like to get into it via board games and box sets. I get a lot more bang for my buck, they are releasing a lot lately, and my group has more options for game night. We may skirmish some battles, or dungeon crawl with Silver Tower, and I as the hobbyist of the group get to paint the top of the line minis GW puts out.

The biggest stickler? The lore. My whole group loves Fantasy, old world, and we don't quite "get" AoS.

All it once it struck me, why not 40k? But I don't even know where to begin. Could you splendid folks briefly summarize some of your favorite 40k box sets or board games? I'm curious what you get, factions, what the games are like if the box includes a game, lore, prices, etc. Nothing is too obvious. I know nothing of 40k.

Check out my miniature painting log:

Well there is simply just plain old 40k, which can vary in price depending on how you go about buying everything and what army you like. Then there is Shadow War: Armaggedon which is a small skirmish game, which costs like 40 bucks for the starter box. If I was you guys, I would look at the new starter box, and if anyone likes the look of the armies, but that and a couple 85 dollar start collecting boxes for the armies you wanna field

Well if you're looking to get into 8th edition, the starter set for that will be released next month. It seems pretty solid with a lot of new Space Marine and Death Guard models that look really nice. Since you'll get the rules with this, it's probably going to be the best avenue into 40k if you want to play the current edition.

If you're interested in checking out other games in the setting, there are many other stand alone box sets, some of which are well-regarded classics. Space Hulk is probably a good game if you're just looking for something self-contained, and Betrayal at Calth is a great value with some fun skirmish mechanics. Those are the two I would personally recommend checking out.
