With 8ed ed coming up, I may as well try and get some models done. Anything to get me motivated!

Behold the Emperor, the Master of Mankind! Or just a C'tan cosplaying as the Emprah. Same thing, really.

So I had this WIP sculpt that I haven't touched in years, and since I have no idea what to do in the new edition, I figured defaulting to Necrons isn't the worst idea I've ever had.

The model was originally conceived in the rumor stage of the 2011 codex before I knew the dreadful extent of the retcon that would afflict my poor Necrons. That drained much of my motivation to wrap up this little project, and the following years didn't help when the rules for C'tan didn't exactly encourage me to play one. And while I still did, I have enough stock C'tan so that the Emperor wasn't a priority.

Now the best thing about new rules is kicking in: the uncertainty of how they will turn out. Might be good, might be dreadful. But as long as I don't know, at least there's hope.

Background-wise, the C'tan is meant to rule over Necrons afflicted with a bad case of Flayeritis, with a Pariah Lord as their marshal. Take that GW. I can fanfic even worse then you! These days, I can shorthand the background I envisioned as a type of Flesh Eater Courts in space, with the C'tan seeing the Imperium as his domain and its citizens as his subjects. Accordingly, the Flayed Ones try to dress up properly.

I'm using the pictures to see if there are any major flaws left on the model (comments welcome) before I move on to paint him. The rather significant time gap between when I started sculpting him and now has left the model a bit on the lower end of what I can sculpt, but overall I'm happy with him and if I started redoing parts of him to my current standard, it would probably be quicker to scrap the model and start anew.

Maybe I'm just being critical of myself. To me, it's all in the little details. It's great learning from experience, at least in the long run, but it's also the bane of my existence. I sculpt something new and by the time I'm finished I learned so much I should redo what I've just done and resculpt it into what it should have been in the first place.

I could start at the bottom and go, those tentacles could have one or two hang free in the air. The claws they end in could have been sculpted to have some open instead of all of them being closed. With more motion in the tentacles, I could have given the leg stumps a little more motion. With that, the pteruges could interact a little more with the tentacles and legs. And on topic of interaction, especially in the back the cloak is very complete and could have had more interaction with tentacles coming out of it. It is living metal, after all, and that would have given the model more areas were Necron and human look flow into each other. The cloak was also sculpted at a time when I had a good bit of trouble with organic flow. The surface is a bit on the crude side and could have been done smoother. The eagles' feathers are separated by cutting into a flat surface to divide individual feathers. These days I would give each feather an angled surface and more depths on its own. The neck guard is a solid block and I could have put a cavity behind it instead so that the neck is shown. the transition from mouth to Necron skull could have been done with more depth. The shoulder eagle's free wing could have been half as thick, as could have been the heraldic shield. The eagle's body could have gotten clearer definition and interaction with the wing. The talons could have gotten more mechanical parts and the power fist under them more interaction with them. The flayer claw, and I'm not even sure I remember this entirely correctly since it's been so long, could have been reinforced with wire better than I've done. The hand itself could have done with more little mechanical bits. Because I added the pelt on the shoulder pad only now, I actually redid all fur on the model because I could not bring myself to mimic the crudeness and lack of depth it used to have.

Not that I'm unhappy with the model. Not yet. But so far every time I finished a model I get the feeling that with that experience under my belt I could do the model so much better.

In recent year I spent my time improving smoothness, symmetry, facial sculpts and making things as fine and as detailed as I can. Much of which wouldn't apply to the Emperor, so as far as big models go, he's my most recent model and therefore the current standard in that category.

I attached a WIP picture of the Inquisitor I'm working on. For lack of decoration (I'm still working on the basic armor) it's not yet representative of what I described above, but once I get there it'll be what I would consider the best I can do at this point. The model came together pretty well without having much of an idea what I was going to do when I started out. Actual planning is a meta skill I will have to work on... Also, since I have no idea what wargear Inquisitors are allowed in the new edition (knowing GW, less than I want is my ever so depressing guess) and I like my models to by WYSIWYG, I'm in no particular hurry with her. I started work in January, but took a hiatus because of the new edition.

Slightly NSFW because of sculpted armor:

Thank you. The wires will become sheathed blades in time.

I used to play an Inquisitor with dual daemon blades. Imperial Agents opened up the option to buy them alongside terminator armor, and since I love Terminators I figured it was the right time for an updated model. A bit optimistic on my part considering that was six months before the new edition and I need three to four months worth of daily sculpting to finish a high end human sized model. I'll have to see if I can get a preview of the new Inquisitor rules for options. Worst case scenario, the option is gone and I'll have to do something else. But since the blades are sheathed, I intend to keep them on in any case.

There's a good bit of uncertainty about the model at the moment, but since I also consider it an opportunity to sculpt terminator armor that fits human anatomy and does not require the user to break several bones to wear it, I can at least finish the actual armor plus much of the decoration before I have to worry about any gear.

Want to hear a funny story? I figured I'd paint the Emperor over the next week or so. So I sat down and got started only to drop the model. The thumb of the flayer claw broke in tw places and here I am trying to find the motivation to go and fix it. All the while reading the most depressing news about 8th ed. Yay. So...

Until I can get motivated, the Emperor is on hold.

Since those at GW removed daemon weapons from the Inquisitor options, I have no will to keep working on the Inquisitor. GW!

Seriously. Well, not that it matters, because it looks like my little diplomatic Inquisitorial mission won't be allowed in my Necrons anyway in the new edition...

So instead I'm painting Marines for now. That's all GW is good for these days.

These are my Ultramarines. I originally made them from (mostly) excess starter kit models that I wanted to paint and be done with. Ultramarines were a good choice because the paint job is simple, nobody likes Ultramarines and they're totally expendable. This is what I managed to paint between the 5th ed and 6th ed codex.

As my go to army when I don't feel like anything I am invested in, they're kept generic and restricted to 2nd company. I bought a couple of Centurions on release to add a bit of fire power to the very, very lacking missile launcher/flamer party they got going, but since the army is not the biggest priority to me I never got around to painting them. With 8th ed looking pretty bland, it's time to go and give these guys another go.

I also have Guilliman on sprue, so I may assemble and paint him, too. Going to depend on how much 40k I'm going to play in the near future. If the new edition is good fun and a bit more diverse than Age of Sigmar, I'll have a reason to spend time on him. And if that happens, I'll obviously be breaking out of a purely 2nd company army, so perhaps there are more additions in the future. Maybe even the odd Guillimarine. Who knows.

So it turns out my painting schedule is full with Fallout stuff. That leaves me no room for the Ultramarines Centurions at the moment.

Instead I had a little time and green stuff left over and spent it on finishing a Chaplain I've started converting around ten years ago.

I still intend to go back to the Emperor. but have yet to find the motivation to fix his hand.

Since Kid_Kyoto asked about good old Herman von Strab, or at least my take on him, here's a couple of pictures of him and Nork Deddog. He was originally meant as actual von Strab for Apocalypse and got used as such in a campaign, but eventually I figured I'd get more use out of him if he pulled double duty as an Imperial Guard commander as well.

I never finished the army (as is true for so many more projects). I've kind of given up hope, but maybe the next Guard codex will be interesting and I get a reason to unpack my Guard again. Hey, maybe Tauroxes are good in this edition!

Good news, everyone! I rediscovered my 40k mojo.

Well, it's not as simple as that, but I'm actually working on some 40k models again and don't even feel bad about it. Now if only real life didn't get in the way of hobbying as often as it does...

Today's update is entirely dedicated to WIPs. First up, the Emperor:

I finally got around to repairing his thumb, which puts him pretty high on the to-paint list. Above you can see what I had in mind for base colors. It'll be interesting to see how well I can blend the separate parts together. I sure hope this works out how I imagined.

Next up. the first Mechanicus model undergoing painting and, by virtue of that, the glorious and honored test model for my color scheme:

Overall I'm quite happy with how this turned out. The real issue comes with other models. I love Kataphrons, so it's only natural I'd want to paint them first. But they're all metal, with not a shred of clothing in sight. Once I get to the Skitarii, I need to figure out what to do with their robes and pants. Armor color is obviously white, but I'm not sure how I should proceed to paint any kind of cloth.

It's a bit of a mess. I get the feeling plain white would be too overwhelming while a different color, say red, might look off considering the servitors don't share it. I could try the often used cog pattern around the robe edges to get white with a spot of color. But there I'm not sure how that would translate to the Dominus. Decisions, decisions.

And finally something I am working on very slowly on the side because I'm not in a Marine mood right now, a WIP of a Deathwatch Primaris:

I don't like the shorts and sneakers look of the Reivers, so I figured shock absorbers might make sense considering they can deep strike or do Spiderman moves or whatever. All the while the front gets beefed up to get the familiar Marine silhouette. And because I don't really have anywhere else for them to go, I threw a Deathwatch shoulder pad on. I only meant to assemble one Kill Team before 8th ed for my Inquisitors to draw on, and since I have no intention of getting more Primaris than the squad of Reivers and Intercessors (you guessed it - First Strike models), it's a good fit scale-wise. In any of my proper Marine armies I'd contemplate the right mix of Primaris and real Marines. Here, this is not a concern since all my Deathwatch are just auxiliary choices to be used when I feel like it.

Behold the Emperor, the Master of Mankind! Again! This time in color!

Sooo... That's done. Yay.

I don't exactly have plans for the near future because of real life interference limiting my hobbying time. Ideally I want to keep painting my Mechanicus models, but that may end up taking a little while as my focus is still on Fallout. At some point I'll even want to get some work on Age of Sigmar models done. But that is pretty much completely on hold at the moment because we are running a 40k campaign at my local store, so Age of Sigmar is currently not played.

Next round of pictures.Let's start off with something painted before we get to the depressingly grey WIPs:

I painted these earlier this year as the first unit of my mortal denizens of Shyish. I have a number of humans, elves and dwarfs from a pre-End Times project that found a new home in Age of Sigmar. It's basically a Free Peoples army with a couple of other units I like the look of thrown in. They're an ongoing project with a fair few conversions, so they're taking a while to get anywhere, but I'll probably post some WIPs occasionally.

Originally, that was yesterday in case anyone was wondering, the desire to paint fantasy models again overcame me and I meant to paint Silver Tower models, which may still happen as it's a fun game and I wouldn't be opposed to play it with painted miniatures, but as an undead player at heart the longing for my undead legions was too strong and I got out some of those models instead.

Let's start with the big one. Tipsy the Zombie Dragon:

I like the silhouette of the Terrorgheist much more than that of the stock Zombie Dragon, especially with the silly throne mounted on its back, but I wanted a Zombie Dragon for twenty years and Age of Sigmar finally allows you to field a riderless one. Some cutting and resculpting muscle and bone later, Tipsy is done. Note that I also repositioned the wings to make it transportable. As nice as GW models are, having finicky bits protrude in every direction really makes them hard to pack and lug around. That's half of the reason I've never managed to get the motivation to assembly my Coven Throne.

Anyway, what's missing is the thing I struggle most with: filling a huge base with decoration. It's possibly my least favorite modeling thing to do. I've got the style covered on anything up to 60mm bases, as can be seen of the WIP of the Varghulf below, but it just won't do on anything larger. I'm struggling to think of how to go about it best. I have gravestones and a Garden of Morr, so I'm not really hurting for fitting bits, but composition as well as the question of whether I should anything else are still a headache.

As far as painting is concerned, I started putting the base layers on the Varghulf, but more importantly I've got a Crypt Haunter Courtier well on it's way. It's the next model I'll finish, probably followed by the Varghulf.

NSFW warning because the Courtier does not adhere to the court's formal dress code:

Spoiler:

I'll see how long my Age of Sigmar mood lasts. I'm in no short supply of undead models that would like some love, and as I said there's Silver Tower as well that could use some attention, especially since I'm finally getting around to buying Hammerhal. More plastic for the pile!

I painted the Crypt Haunter Courtier.

NSFW warning because ghouls don't wear pants:

Spoiler:

So I thought to myself, big ghoul done, one to Varghulf, but due to considerable drying times I found myself painting a Wight King on the side which as it so happens is now closer to completion than the Varghulf. Not sure which one I'l actually finish first, but it'll be one of them.

The only model left that is primed is Krell (or the generic Wight King formerly known as Krell ). After that I'll see what I do. Maybe I will switch to Silver Tower models, maybe I'll stick with undead for a little while longer.

So there I was thinking about future projects and what I might be interested in doing and I came back to an earlier sculpt:

NSFW Spoiler. Like, seriously. Girl's wearing even less than usual.

Spoiler:

The Flayed Princess used to lead my Warriors of Chaos, and quite successfully so if I may add (not that Chaos Lords had a particularly hard time back then, mind). Now with all the wonderful rumors (read: vague hints and wishful thinking for now) about Slaanesh finally getting some model love this year, I may just feel like making a new version of her.

Small history lesson for anyone who is bored enough to read it, I've been struggling to find the motivation to work on GW models ever since Age of Sigmar appeared. I keep going because GW makes many pretty models and I like pretty models, but since the local community has severely decreased in size and is only starting to recover now, three years later. 7th ed 40k wasn't particularly popular, Age of Sigmar still isn't, and nobody I talke to cares for the decrease in equipment options we've seen in the last couple of years. The latter is my main problem. I have no incentive to use anything but the stock option but my own desire to make a pretty model, and I don't need Warhammer for that. Plenty of other games around for that. But since GW games are all that's played at my local store and I don't get many games in these days - well, you may see the problem. So the lack of motivation has not been kind on my GW model collection.

Slaaneshi models just so happen to be the ones that require extensive work but that I keep coming back to because GW hardly provides evocative models for them. So I figured if there's going to more Slaaneshi action in the near future, perhaps I could get a head-start and at least have a suitable leader ready.

Which brings me to the design stage of this post. The ideal solution to a problem that has yet to be fully defined is that I make one model that fits both 40k and AoS. The Age of Sigmar side is pretty simple. Slaves to Darkness has a warlord warscroll. There are no options and no need whatsoever for WYSIWYG. 40k is a bit harder to do. What am I going to use her as? Some Marine HQ seeing as she's human sized? Ever since fleshmetal is officially a thing for Chaos, WYSIWYG in that regard is not a problem at all. The real issue is to make something that isn't too high-tech and sci-fi for AoS while at the same time not being low-tech and fantasy-like enough to get in the way of 40k.

I'm thinking the warp/Realm of Chaos look is the way to go here. Daemonically forged equipment can fit in both settings. A daemon weapon (sword, claw, maul), warp forged armor pieces, no problem.

What I'm struggling with is pretty much entirely related to composition. Take a look at the pictures. The unpainted one, while considered finished at the time I took the pictures, doesn't have shoulder armor because at the time I didn't have a good feel for the model. It only occurred to me afterwards that the helmet was, by its very nature, quite large compared to her slim shoulders. But I needed the helm of many eyes because I prefer WYSIWYG. I didn't want to add too much armor because what's the point of the flayed look if it's cover up and can't be seen? The shoulder armor I ended up with is a quick solution that I didn't think through all that much. An experiment, if you will, to see what that kind of design might look like.

Similarly, the armor plates she wears are the second version I tried. Prior to the flayed skin faces, I went with a spiky look that did not appeal. I'm not sure I'd repeat that as I think it detracts a little from the wearer by adding skin where it doesn't belong and conceals the steel armor whose purpose it is to add contrast to the model. At least I was clever enough to give the faces a paler skin color, but that's not much. I'm also not sure I'd repeat the tentacles instead of straps to hold them in place. Tentacles are suitably daemonic, but I don't think I did myself any favors by obscuring the actual model and going with a color that isn't all that contrasting.

As far as the pose goes, I'm not a fan of wild action poses, but combined with the base decoration and the worshipper the model is pretty crowded and I think the different elements get in the way of each other and obscure the view on individual parts too much. That's shouldn't be too much of an issue because unlike this model, the new model doesn't have to fit into regimental formation. I'm pretty particular though about how wide a base may be at most compared to the model as I'm not a fan of a base taking the spotlight. All this leads me to taking a different approach to the models pose that isn't quite as relaxed, but aside from "a little more action is fine" I don't have an idea yet what kind of pose to do. I do think I will drop the side show, though. I've never been a fan of models sharing a base (except for swarms where that's the entire point). I experimented with it a bit on this and a few other models, but find it not to my taste. Dead body on the ground is about as far as I'm willing to go these days.

Hmm, what to do, what to do?

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

I'm doing Custodes!

Most models are straightforward assemble and paint affairs, but I got a plastic Contemptor that is not going to join the army unconverted. Here's the current WIP:

I'm really not a fan of Contemptors, and the plastic version is even less a work of art, to put it politely. But I have one thanks to the Calth box, and this way at least I don't have to worry about making it look good next to my beloved Mk. III armor. I think the general shape of it is much better suited to Custodes power armor than Marine power armor.

The foremost things I dislike about the standard kit is the oversized Marine helmet, which is easily fixed by replacing it with a Custodes helmet (which handily gives me a place to put the top knot to tie it in with the infantry), and how thin the legs look from the front. I'm not hurting for banner bits to bulk them out. The joints between the body and wings need a bit of green stuff work to cover the gap, but aside from that I'm happy with how it turned out.

The chest wasn't blinged out enough either, so a Terminator cross and two aquilas now complement the scroll and iron halos that are already there. I think that's plenty, even if it has less of a blanketing presence as the shin pieces. There's also the Custodes helmet which adds ornamentation, so I feel pretty good about that.

The back banner is a late addition. The Terminator banner is smaller and has finer detail than the banner of the original Custodes kit, and since I'm not doing a fully golden color scheme but intend to have white shoulders, I'm very happy to have the ropes to add a little more white to the model. Plus I did back banners for my Ultramarines and I like having my pompous Imperial armies look the part. And let's face it, the Custodes' job is to look pretty while standing around all day so they are prime candidates for the treatment.

Overall I'm pretty happy with how these parts look together. The big part that's missing is the shoulders. While I may add the odd tiny little bit here and there to round things off, I saved the shoulders for last because they're giving me the most trouble. I'm not entirely sure yet what to do here. I have of course thought of the easiest solution, more birds, as well as the classic heraldic shield on the left shoulder, along with something more restrained (which I ultimately decided against - this model is long since beyond restraint). Did three archeological digs in my various bits boxes, too, without finding anything better than what I've come up with so far. So this is going to take a little longer to make up my mind, but considering I whipped this up in only three days, I'm confident that I won't take forever to finish this model.

Plus, I have five more Terminators to assemble to play the army, so even if I need a couple of days to think, I won't have any trouble finding something to do in the meantime.

And hey, maybe I'll even get this army painted for once. Ten model army FTW!

I've been in a bit of a mixed mood lately. I figured painting Tau skin might be neat as I have two or three helmetless ones that I painted back in the day that I like the look of, but I'm more in the mood for Necrons and Inquisition at the moment.

Thus I converted a Tau to become a henchthing of my only really slightly radical Xenos Inquisitor:

Kind of debating whether I should put a skull or two on the base before priming it or not. I like the Sector Imperialis bases and they're my current standard, but they came out a bit late for my Inquisition which has the skull and blood theme that can be seen in some of the pictures above.

The question is whether they stand out to much. Thanks to the sand around them, the skulls on the handmade bases are a bit recessed and don't stand out too much. I won't get that feel on the Sector Imperialis bases.

I had myself a bit of fun:

That's Zelia from the upcoming 40k Warhammer Adventures novels, in case you didn't know. I found myself with a bit of extra time and nothing better to do after I finished my last sculpt I had planned for this year, and figured I might give sculpting the kids a try after reading the novel extract. Zelia is the first (and so far the only one - who knows when I'll get around to the others) pretty much because she's front and center on the book cover and she's the only one with any kind of characterization in the extract, which helps with sculpting.

Sure. It's not too complicated. Start with a solid layer of Skullcrusher Brass on black primer. Then give it a healthy wash of brown first, then of black. That will give you dark recesses and a good base color on the surfaces. Paint watered down Skullcrusher Brass on the places you want to highlight and follow that up with another layer of undiluted Skullcrusher Brass.

I did the last step in a feathering kind of way (I think - I don't really know all the painting terms) for style. I don't know if that does anything to shape the appearance of the gold color that normal layering or blending wouldn't do. I do like to have uneven edges and streaks on metals, though.

The final step is brush-on matt varnish (I use the one from Vallejo). Admittedly dulled metal is a particular look that some people don't like, but it's what gives the color that specific finish.

Finally, I don't know how well this works on flat surfaces. The Emperor has lots of deep detail that really helps establish contrast via the washes. The depth is part of the look.

Hope that helps.

Warcry teaser last week had me motivated with all this Chaos stuff in Age of Sigmar, so I did what anyone in my position would do, I painted some dead people:

I had the Shadespire skeleton warband since release but couldn't get motivated to paint them for a long time. That time is over now.

While my Shyish mortals or generally meant to be off-white and purple, I based these skeletons on my old Tomb Kings skeleton regiment instead, now with added oxidation thanks to a pot of GW's technical color whose name escapes me at the moment.

Fun models all around. I wish GW released more new undead that are not ghosts.

I painted an Imperial Fist.

Wait, that's not an Imperial Fist at all. He does have the nicest shade of yellow I managed to paint in a decade and a half, though. Been really struggling with that.

So this is Hrikki, the Amber Lion, Chaos Lord of great misfortune. I originally converted him in 2011, had him lead my Warriors of Chaos once, just once, had him fail utterly in that game and then replaced him with the Flayed Princess (as seen above) without a second thought*. Which is quite tragic because I had a lot of fun kitbashing the model but never got to use him afterwards. I never even thought of painting him either. But I'm not one to let a good model go to waste and Age of Sigmar is his second chance. He got his round base and a paint job and maybe I'll have a use for him now.

I'm still looking forward to Warcry, and if that game does not turn out to be a massive catastrophe I could well get used to the idea of giving Hrikki his own warband hailing from Ghur. Because let me tell you, I'm not going to paint a whole bunch of models yellow, that's for sure. I'm thinking with it being the Realm of Beasts there's plenty of skin and furs with maybe a bit of cloth that I can paint orange and yellow to tie the warband together. All depending on how the models end up looking, of course. Maybe I'll like a different warband more. Or just convert my own. Until GW gives us a good look at the game, that's up in the air.

Now that I'm in the mood again for painting Age of Sigmar models I have a couple of characters from various armies on my desk. No idea how long motivation lasts this time, but maybe with so many different models I'll not get bored too quickly. Since I don't currently play Age of Sigmar and Warcry is still in the future, I at least won't have to deal with the tedium of painting armies. The next models will likely be an Abhorrent Archregent followed by a Sigmarine or two.

*To add a little context, though Hrikki did spectacularly fail in leading his army and battling a Tomb Prince in single combat, he's more of a victim of high points cost of Warriors of Chaos. Originally I intended the army to have followers of all gods united under an undivided warlord. That would have been Hrikki. After writing an army list or two and tallying up the obscene points cost I cut that down to Slaanesh and Khorne, before dropping Khorne as well when the models for the Slaanesh side only just fit into 2000 points. And for a dedicated army like that I wanted a dedicated warlord. So Hrikki had to go.

Good work Geifer! Now that is a nice model, there is no way he would have been demoted in any of my armies looking that cool.

I love how the lion head is pretty much engulfing him, it gives him a sort of stalwart 'I don't give a S***' vibe. Like, I can't see anything to the left, but I'm still going to walk casually forward and smash you in with this giant mace...

I converted and painted a Knight-Questor:

The first of a quest party and the leader of it, because we all know who the protagonists of Age of Sigmar are, Amararastra, Beloved of Asaph, was styled to evoke a Nehekharan feel. Since GW squatted my favorite army I have to make do any way I can, and i figured an assortment of characters with a common Tomb Kings feel, even if most of them are very much alive, was going to be a fun project. And I have to say, now that the central model is finished I'm very much in the mood for more.Yay!

There are two ways I intend to take this project. The first thing I'll do is the quest party proper. I have ideas worked out and some models waiting to be converted for a couple of characters. i don't know how many I'll end up with, but currently in the works are two vampires, which will take a while longer as work on them is rather extensive, and an elf based on the Dark Elf Sorceress that I just started to work on. There will be another elf (a privateer captain), two trees (I've been wanting to work on Sylvaneth models for a good while, but don't want an army or even full unit), a halfling (the cook), a human exotic dancer (the cook's sidekick), a human priest of Sigmar (that I'd like to base on Ghur denizen aesthetic) and I'd like a dwarf or two as well, but haven't really given that much thought yet (Kharadron Overlords have some nice models). I may or may not add more if I think of something cool.

The second thing, which depends on GW more than on me, is a small warband of humans converted with excess Tomb Kings bits for Warcry. Of course I'll have to like Warcry in the first place, it needs to catch on at my local store, there needs to be an Order Warband that lets you mix Sigmarines and normal people, and so on. I have enough Tomb Guard bits for a handful of models and Kairic Acolytes may make for a good basis, seeing as how they are somewhat Egyptian styled already. But this is still in the future and it has yet to be determined how much I want and need to do this for Warcry. Would be cool regardless, but if I need the models for the game they'll take priority over the characters and will get done sooner.

I mentioned an Abhorrent Archregent as the next model to get painted above, but that turned out to be problematic for the worst reason possible: I'm undecided how to paint my ghouls. And if I don't know which way to take the army, I'm hesitant to paint the king lest he looks off next to his army. Not too much of a problem, though, since I already have a project to take up my time.

Quick note on yellow:

 Geifer wrote:
I painted an Imperial Fist.

For contrast (sue me! ) I gave an actual Imperial Fist that I previously considered a failed look into painting a satisfying yellow a coat of Iyanden Yellow Contrast paint. Preshading, I guess you'd call it:

And I will say, I think I'm in love. Some areas are a little rough which is no doubt in part due to the properties of Contrast paints, but also down to my not feeling particularly well when I slapped it on. There's probably a lesson in there about not painting when your hands shake so badly they're about to fly off, but I can't very well let that get in the way of science, can I?

Anyway, I am taken both by the shade of yellow and its depth. I don't want to say that Contrast paint is bottled magic, what with it requiring careful application to avoid the negative properties, and I'm going to have to subject this particular paint to some more testing, but I never thought I'd see the day where I would claim that painting satisfying yellow is a breeze. But here we are.

That's really neat! I don't know if i'll get the chance to try out contrast paints myself for quite a while, but if they make yellow less of a chore i might have to try them sooner.
