Because I have a friend who, I quote...

"My qualms with MEdge are less "This isn't particularly new and inspired" but more "This is literally ripped wholesale out of WH40K"."

They're talking both fluff and mechanics, by the way.

I'd be curious as to what he is seeing as similar... Because size from the fact that MEdge is in the future, and there is war, there's very little crossover.

Not a he. They're genderfluid, and I'd appreciate you guys using the correct pronouns. (They, them, anything gender neutral, really.) Not that I think you were doing that on purpose-you just didn't know.

Anyway, they say the factions are just 40k rip offs (Epirians being Ad Mech, for instance) and the rules are barely changed 40k, pointing to things like having the same unit types, the same force org (sorta...), and to-hit and to-wound rolls.

Your friend is coming at it from a flawed perspective.

That is, that the concept of 40k itself being ORIGINAL and not a "rip-off" of what influenced it (because most of 40k's tropes DO come from elsewhere, just ramped up to 11).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

There tends to be a general assumption on gaming forums that a gamer is male unless stated otherwise, as they tend to make up the bulk of the community. It's not intended to be offensive, just a reflection of the demographic.

I don't see that at all. I mean, they both use robots, but the AdMech are a religious cult who believe body augmentation is a divine gift and who use ancient technology without understanding how most of it works. The Epirian Foundation is a progressive corporate entity that uses a mix of robots and trained human troops, and is largely all about what's best for profits. They have more in common with, say, the Star Wars Trade Federation than with the AdMech.

Ultimately, there are only so many ways of doing things that work in a game, so you're going to see individual mechanics that look similar to other games in just about any ruleset that you pick up. It's the application that makes the difference... And the actual gameplay in MEdge is completely different to 40k.

Yes, MEdge had to hit and to wound rolls... But they work differently to 40k's, and their effect is completely different.

Being able to spot individual mechanics that look like another game doesn't make a system a copy of that other game... It just means that they have some similar mechanics.

That's what I tell them, and they still insist it's just a 40k rip-off.

Ah well. And yeah, that's a legit assumption. Like I said, you didn't know, so I'm sure you meant nothing by it.

Have they ever played any tabletop games apart from 40k?

I don't think so.

Maybe they tried a little Fantasy?

Edit: "I've played Warmachine, WHF, Necromunda and Mordheim.

Though Necro and Mordheim are kinda not wargames.

Oh, and LotR strategy battle game too."

So speaketh them!

Well, yeah, if they've only played GW games that would explain why they would automatically connect a different game to one of those...

I'm puzzled as to how Necromunda and Mordheim aren't wargames, though.

They're kinda hybrid Wargames, I guess?

Side note-does Warmachine have a Force Org chart, to-hit and to-wound rolls, and points based list construction?

They're wargames largely based on campaign mechanics. Plenty of those around, ranging from skirmishes to commanding full armies.

And basically yes to all three. Warmachine/Hordes has Force Allowance (how many copies of a unit or individual you can take in a list), uses 2d6 for hitting and wounding, and points values.

Lol... Funnily enough, purely based on mechanics, it probably does have more in common with Warmachine than with 40k.

Years ago when I was trying to get friends into Warmachine one of my friends stated that WM was a rip off of 40k because Cygnar and Ultramarines are both painted blue and Warjacks looked like Dreds, so obviously they were the same game.

Some people are just difficult.
