Just wondering- is the current line of LOTR/Hobbit resin models still mired in the swamp of finecast or have they switched to something else?

Aside from Smaug and the FW units everything else is finecast. If you can, try to get the older metal minis, they are of much higher quality and at times cheaper. Of course, not everything had a metal version.
Also as the hobbit minis were produced a bit later when GW improved their resin production, they are not as bad as earlier finecast minis. Probably still the worst resin minis on the market, but only rarely warped.

The Forge World figures are the same hard resin they use for their 40K figures. The older stuff GW is still selling is split between hard plastic (generally warrior boxes) and finecast for characters and some specialist troops.

Those Iron Hill Dwarves look really sharp, though I try to steer clear of finecast. I truthfully loved the old metal sculpts even if they were more difficult to work with in respect to conversions.

Then you're in luck since they are not finecast. All the FW Hobbit miniatures are the same hard resin everything else they make is.

A good chunk of the lotr range was never converted to finecast and almost all of the finecast can be found in metal on eBay or trade sites. If its a elites group of 3-4 or a hero and no material is mentioned in the description it's metal.
