We are in a bit of a renaissance of Ancients wargaming rules. With the demise of Warhammer Ancient Battles in the distant past we are in the Epignoi of the Diadochi from WAB's passing. Successors have come and gone. There are just so many options out there now. As a gamer interested in doing more with Ancient rules, which do you prefer and why?

I know what they play locally, but I wanted your thoughts and opinions on the options on the market.

Thanks.

L'Art de la Guerre is what finally pulled me into Ancients/Medieval. It's a tournament based ruleset with some interesting command/control mechanics using pips and individual commands (a 200 point force has three commands, each with its own commander, once of which is the force's overall leader).

While I'm working on a Free Company force, I'm looking at either Classical or Tamil Indians, as fielding six elephants on the table looks fun, and two of the guys that play locally already have Indian forces.

I like Sword and Spear. Flexible basing, fairly quick to learn & play rules. Feels "right" to me (note that this doesn't necessarily mean historical accuracy. More of a cinematic sense, I guess)

I'm on a podcast about (video) game design:

And I also stream tabletop painting/playing Mon&Thurs 8PM EST

And make YouTube videos for that sometimes!

Geeze Easy. I needed google to understand your metaphor.... which was spot on BTW.

Im still torn. I love Perry Bros sculpts but I think 10mm Pendraken would be better for what I want. But that wasn't your question...

I bought L'ADG and it looks fun. But looking at PHGamers bat reps, the game isnt really very visually appealing. Very hohum. Ive watched some HC! Reports from youtube's HolyDiver (i think) and they use the 28mm perry's. Beautiful.

Down at Game Kastle today for the BAO, and I am looking for the Hail Caesar! rules. Im just so torn on the scale to which to commit.

Do you have a suggestion? Im pretty rural and a simpler game where I can buy both sides will increase my likelihood of EVER playing. Which is why Im considering 10mm. That said I have the Union and Confederate Perry set completly painted and have yet to play.

Gamers seem to be drawn to 28mm, but 10mm is much more affordable, paintable, and transportable.

15mm is another popular scale for ancients/historical that you might want ot consider.

Suppliers?

I tried to buy Hail Caesar! At Game Kastle in MtnView, which incidentally is the BIGGEST game shop I have ever seen. Didnt have it, but I did pick up Gripping Beast's 'SwordPoint' and 'Kings of War Historical.' Just for shiggles. Still no minis... thank goodness.
