What's your forlorn hope? A project that you always come back to but know deep down you'll never complete or convince your gaming group to play. For me it's 10mm fantasy, Warmaster in particular. I've got a completed Empire army and two more in progress and three or four more planned. I've got big dreams of a huge table covered in tiny figures massed in neat little regiments clashing over perfect tiny terrain.

I've spent years chipping away at my lead pile. Weathered GW discontinuing the warmaster line and researching alternatives. I'll get their eventually, and then I'll force my friends to play out my vision

Unfortunately, I have a few:

metal Chainmail minis. When the plastic D&D miniatures came out, this was a lost cause - they were primed, then forgotten. I do plan to be getting rid of them shortly.

Robotech RTT. What a sad waste. I started painting the minis and then realized, "what's the use"? They sit on the shelf, I'm keeping them merely as a reminder to never buy anything from PB again at this point.

Star Trek RPG. I like the TOS/TNG eras, but the group I had when I bought the RPG have mostly moved on. Only one person in the current group has any like for Star Trek, everyone else would rather do Star Wars.

And speaking of GW, I've got a pile of the original Adeptus Titanticus and Space Marine epic units (including some Eldar I picked up). I tried playing a game recently, and it just sort of fell flat - I think game design has moved on from at least the original rules.

For me, it's probably my LOTR SBG collection. We don't really have a local community for it at all. It's a crying shame as it's a good game and I love the minis and setting. I really should see about selling my minis, as most of them are still sitting on the sprues. The ones I have painted are among the first minis I ever painted and are shamefully badly done. I wouldn't mind seeing what I could do with them at my current painting skill, but I always ask myself "What's the point?"

Seconded with the LOTR SBG. I've a pile of minis that I don't count as part of my collection as I know I'll rarely if ever game with them but damnit do the sculpts look good and that the magazine series (I need to track down) was a wealth of hobby info

6mm WW2 war gaming. One day I dream of building something like this: but there is no way I could have the space for that where I live now. Not even if it was modular. I do have unopened armies of British, American and German but being honest to myself I will never get around doing it. Maybe in 30 years.

Imperial Assault.

Even for such simple miniatures I like them a lot. I and my brother and nephews love Star Wars. But I can never convince them to play it, so I can never convince myself to paint it.

Void1.1 Junkers Army:
It's about halfway painted and I've got all the figures for it but other projects always intevene. I intended it as a proxy for 40k or Warpath or somesuch, but the last time parts of it hit the table was with "WarEngine" and that was 6 years ago.

Painted 10mm Mech Army.
I've already got a big army made from rebased, prepaitned Mechwarrior clix. I collected all the mechs and platoons of vehicles (mixed factions) for a second army that I planned to paint, but whenever we plan a Mech Battle (usually Mech Attack or Alpha Strike) I just bring the existing army instead.

I've also got a Squat army, but that's one I'm determined to finish. Except that it's been 4 years and I haven't...

And that's not counting the innumerable small warbands of unpainted minis in my lead pile for Post Apoc, Sci-Fi and Fantasy gaming.

My 10mm Rohan seem like a lost cause at the moment, as well as my Emisarrius from Ex Illis.

Skorne seem impossible for me to paint. I put a few colours on a Skorne model, then I just think it does not look right and then stop. I am not sure what the problem is.

I've squirreled a bunch of these away too. All stuff I got cheap used. I've set them asside to paint and game with my kid when he's old enough but if it happens that he isn't interested, I'll probably sell them off.

Very nice figs though...

I collected an Empire army when 6e Warhammer came out. Only did a few of the characters past basecoat as I needed them for D&D.

I find it pretty hard to find the motivation to spend months painting those old Spearmen and Handgunners - especially with their world being dead - so they'll probably never get done.

I bought a collection of Firestorm Armada fleets when a friend was running a 40k campaign (screw paying for BFG on ebay, highway robbery), got them all assembled and primed...never played a game, bought'em 2 years ago.

My half painted Roman legion for Hail Caesar, bought my dad some Celts and he never opened the box, so...those guys are sitting somewhere collecting dust.

Spartan Games...great purveyor of forlorn hopes. I went all in on Dystopian wars, loved the idea of a steam punk naval/land/air game. Love al the models and I've got two boxes stuffed with blister packs. So far I've completed a Prussian Starter and a Brit starter. Played one game in 7 years.

Finish painting my Imperial Guard army. W40K is dead to me, and yet I figured I could finish painting them... to say I finished the project. I'm 30 conscripts away and 20 guardsmen away, with only a few tanks left... and yet I am completely out of steam.

The pile of Raging Heroes minis I have is also very shameful, as even skirmish games of Kill Team aren't able to spruce up interest in my gaming group.

I bought most of the Marvel Miniatures when the game released, loved the game play and the universe, sadly when the license was dropped I lost all interest in it. So now I have a collection of highly detailed pewter super heroes staring at me in discontent.

also, my Genestealer Cult for 40K. I'm currently finishing up my Eldar and DE then painting a small force of harlequins before finishing up my crons so I have about 2500pts sitting on the backburner where they'll most likely stay for a while.

My All Quiet on the Martian Front armies. I have remnants of a US army and a few Tripods left over from when I cleared out my KS lots. I still love the models and setting of the game, but have no idea when I'll ever return to finishing the armies. Plus, I sold most of my stuff off, so I'd have to reacquire more models to have functional armies which makes it even more unlikely that I'll resume the project.

I bought in big on the Robotech Kickstarter (at the point where Siembeda was only a jackass and not yet a proper criminal) with plans of doing my favourite IP of all time.

Now that I won't ever receive 60% of the stuff I purchased, that won't be happening.

My epic space marine chapter. I only need a few models to finish it, such as 3 sergeant models, a few rhinos and some more thunderhawks etc.

But NOTHING is painted. Chance of me ever painting a whole chapters worth of stuff, for a game I'm unlikely to ever play again.....

Or my steel legion for 40K. Most of the infantry is still bare metal, the 9 Chimeras + 6 Russ's still in there original shrink wrap, will live in the garage until I retire at best.

Making plastic modular miniatures in the manner of 6th edition wfb. It has taken far more time than expected.

I'm not sure "project that I love" is wholly accurate, but we greatly enjoyed Myth (by megacon games) the one time I convinced my group to play it. Sadly, a lot of the appeal is in the character progression, so we would need to meet far more regularly than we do now, and play to the exclusion of many of the board game the group prefers. I'm a hair's breadth away from selling it all at a loss to clear some space in the closet...

Great idea, for me it's the Adeptus Arbites/SWAT/NYPD army that I've tinkered with a dozen times.

My 10mm Lizardmen are daunting: bought packs of everything from Eureka, had a friend in Australia bring them to me. Have painted 4 stands so far. Learned a valuable lesson about buying a "dream army" all at once.

Like a year later, a friend cleaned out his storage and gave me a pretty solid Warmaster Empire army, all new in blisters. So now my 10mm pile is twice as big! Definitely feeling a bit hopeless about finishing it.

That said, for all of you with frozen Warmaster / 10mm collections: Try Kings of War in 10mm with them. Use cm instead of inches; otherwise change nothing. This is what got me back into minis gaming in a big way, before FoW or (now) 40k 8e.

Custom Crusading Marines Chapter.

We were doing our own 'generic Crusading Marines' set of rules, so not just Black Templars with a different paint scheme. Had an idea for unique weapons (Crusader Blades) and a backstory for my own Chapter which was the remnants of 3 Chapters brought together.

Got parts for it - 30 metal Nemesis Halberds from the original metal PA GK Marines - and the White Scar biker captain to make into a foot-bound Marshal with a giant Crusader Blade.

Then the legs got cannibalised for Deathwatch Marines and I never got around to making it.

I could now though. I have tons of spare Marine legs still, and even two Land Raiders that I'm not going anything with that I could make into the "Land Raider Pandora" (ie. LR with no sponsons so it can carry heaps of infantry).

The 40k racing game that I've been tinkering with since Dakka was just Russ Wakelin's shop's local forum.

I play KoW in 15mm, and I think it is a great fit (we also use cm instead of inches). The table is much easier to set up, the armies much easier to transport. Also, I am finding that I am actually able to finish painting units.

I will admit, there is a part of me that really, really wants to do Kings of War 15mm/10mm...but stay in inches and standard base sizes, and just glory is the epic rank upon rank of it all. Then I realize I'll never paint one army of it, never mind two (because who else'd be that crazy?), and I never buy the minis. But I keep looking and thinking "maybe someday..."

I will say this for 10mm fantasy, the figs paint up pretty quick (even though my own lead mountain never seems to shrink). You generally don't have to do a lot of the fancier paint techniques on the small figures as you will never see your amazing 6 color blend on something so small. It's all about the unit. I usually go for a strong contrasting scheme with a wash and a bold highlight.

And the figures are cheap. $8-9 for packs of 30 figures from some manufactures and there is actually a pretty good selection out there. Dare to dream big!

I've been tempted more than once, but I've got two plastic I-beams of 15mm rats (intended for use as ogres in warmaster, so I know how that goes) that I've never finished after two years telling me its a bad idea Maybe if I can finally fully finish a project with this SAGA project I'm working on...

Approximately 1000 War of Spanish Succession 28mm models.

Not that it's hard, I've painted armies of hundreds of models in no time.

It's just DAUNTING
